3- Not This Time

She hurriedly went to her office. She opened her safe and it was still there staring at her. The coins were the same. It was the same coin from Devina's house.

Just then Chloe walked in. "Chloe," Laura said as immediately dropped the coin inside the safe before shutting it. "I'm sure you have gathered the reports."

"About that..." She had an apologetic look on her face.

"What happened?" Laura said immediately sensing something was wrong.

"The DA made a restriction from those files."

"What do you mean by that? How would he make a restriction on an ongoing investigation? That means nobody can access it." She paced in her office and ran a hand through her hair. She was frustrated enough she didn't need this on her plate.

"The problem is that he didn't stop everybody." Chloe paused and looked at her. Laura raised her brows urging her to continue. "It was just you. And he also said I should tell you you're off the Aria Jordan's case. Gary will be the new prosecutor in charge."

This wasn't happening. "You got to be kidding me!" Just when she was so close to getting to the truth they try throw her under the bus.

She immediately marched to the DA's office ignoring the pleas of Chloe. She opened the door and wasn't surprised with who she saw there.

"Laura I've been looking for you."

"Where is the DA?" She asked ignoring his last statement.

"I don't know. I just-"

"Where is your father Nathan?" She wasn't in the mood for any emotional draining talk. She was already at the edge.

"I don't know. You need to calm down."

"Did you just say calm down?" He tried walking towards her making her to move a step backwards. "Did you know about this?" She stopped looking straight to his eyes.

"It's for your own good."

"So you did."

"I'm sorry. There's nothing we can do about it. You were getting to obsessed about it. You wouldn't let it go."

She was about to say something when she noticed Chloe standing there just staring like she walked into a murder scene. "Mm mm I think I should leave."

Laura didn't pay attention to her. It was Nathan that got all her attention now. "So you guys took me out of the Aria Jordan's case. Why? Was I so obsessed about it as you say Mr Observant? Or did I have a personal relationship with her because I can remember those were the main reasons I was pulled out of Devina's case."

"Look Laura, I don't know why they pulled you out but all I know is that they did."

"That is why I'm asking you for the last time. Where. Is . Your. Father?"

"I don't know." And he was lying. She have known him for ten years to know that already.

"I was getting close." She used her fingers to demonstrate how close. "I was getting so close to finding out what happened to Devina and you know what happened next? They pulled me out. That happened four months ago and I don't know how you want me to feel as it is happening again."

"You are too personally attached to the case. You want justice? Then let us do the right thing. You don't need to be on this case."

"So you want me to ignore the fact that two people died in that house just like everyone else. You want me to ignore the fact that two people were murdered in the same place in not more than four months? Is that what you are asking of me?"

"Devina's case was an exception. It was ruled as suicide I don't know why you wouldn't let it rest."

Because I was there. Because I was in that house when she was murdered.

But she couldn't say that. It was a secret she could tell nobody.

"You know she didn't kill herself Nathan. You've met her before. You know she wasn't the type to just wake up one morning without any motive or anything and decide her life was too miserable to live."

"I've been in this job long enough to know that people do things for different reasons. Maybe you didn't know her as much as you thought you did. Human beings hide the darkest things behind their faces."

Laura paused looking at him trying to regain her temper. "You know what? Maybe you're right. Maybe we don't always know people as much as we think. I mean look at me, I thought I knew you but see where that led me. I can't even recognize you anymore." She said with disgust written all over her face.

"You know that's not true." He had a sad expression on his face.

"You left me." She finally said the words that weighed in her heart for so long. The anger, disgust and contempt was all dripping off that one statement. "You left me when I needed you more than anything."

"Don't make it sound like that. After what happened I couldn't stay here much longer. I needed a new environment for sometime to clear my head."

"Stop talking about it like it was a disease. 'After what happened '. What happened? We lost our baby that's what. And any normal couple would know it was the best time to overcome it together but no. What did you do instead? You took the next flight to Europe after you just found out I may never conceive again." There was bitterness laced in her tone. She wanted to cry but they were no more tears left to cry and even if there was she wouldn't give him the satisfaction of seeing her in tears. Never again.

"I'm sorry Laura. I know I was wrong but-"

"And then you and your father took Devina's case away from me. Now this? This is too low even for you."

"Devina's case was a suicide. Period! There was a note, a motive and a videotape. What else do you need to believe it? Even her daughter testified against her." He was clearly frustrated by my rigidity.

"I don't care if the whole White House testified against her! I know the truth. And the truth is that Devina didn't kill herself, someone else did and went out off their way to frame her for it. I know that her death is tied to the group they call the Messengers. I also know Aria Jordan is connected somehow. I know that me knowing all these things makes my life in danger but that doesn't disturb me. What disturbs me is that the DA knew all these before I did and still decided to ignore it, made me try to get a conviction for an innocent man without enough evidence or motive and even took me off the case without any true reason. It makes me wonder if he knows something about the killer he is not telling us."

A muscle in his face clenched. "I hope you can back up your accusations Laura."

"Accusations? Me? Oh no I'm not accusing anybody of anything. I'm just voicing my thoughts out loud. Sorry a bad habit of mine." She smiled. "I'll be going now since your father isn't around." She said heading to the door. Then she remembered something she wanted to say to him.

"Look Nat, there's something you have forgotten. The reason we became attorneys was to fight for justice, for the helpless and oppressed not to protect criminals. We swore an oath and I don't know what that meant to you but it meant the world to me. You know that we can't do much for the dead. Food, fun, money..." shaking her head with her piercing blue eyes penetrating through him searching for his soul."...they can't have those. We only regret not being able to do somethings for them when they were alive. The only thing we can give them is justice especially those who died unjustly and it's our job to do that not the detectives or whoever. If we fail to do that one thing then I wonder why we are attorneys in the first place. And if everyone in this place has forgotten, well, I haven't and I will make sure to do it, even if it cost my job." She said this and walked out from the door but not before saying. "And tell your dad he can come out now. Nobody normal stays in the bathroom that long." After saying this she walked out of his office and straight to hers. She didn't care what anyone was saying but she wasn't being pulled out from this case. Not this time.
