No Reason

After the volleyball game had been settled, the orignal team winning of course, they all sat down to lunch, provided a little bit from everyone, so that it was buffett style. Of course, Bart and Wally ate the most due to the speed of their metabolism, but, to everyones surprise there was still food left over.

"So, who's doing the musical this year?" La'gaan asked and the actors rasied their hands.

"Geez Dick, you still going?" Karen asked, "Don't you feel like you've almost died enough?"

"I mean, technically I'm dead in this production," He shrugged and Artemis barked a laugh, "What?"

"Technically," She quoted, "We getting into the specifics now because then technically I'm partially dead and partially worryingly happy."

"What parts did you all get?" Conner asked.

"Beetlejuice."

"Delia and Miss Argentina."

"Adam Maitland."

"Charles Deetz."

"Sky, the girl scout."

"Who's Lydia then?" Raquel asked.

"Raven," Barbara answered, "She's a nice kid."

They all nodded to show they'd heard and the day continued to unfold. And next was a race. Artemis held the current record for the race, well, if you didn't count Bart and Wally going off at superspeed, and she wasn't planning on giving it up this year.

They all lined up in the sand between the two rocks, and Wally shouted go. They all hit off the line as fast as we could, racing along the shore until they reached the marker. She looked around her, it was always so close but the winner was whoever grabbed the flag. And she was going to grab the flag. She saw another hand reach out with hers, and put on a final dive. She felt her fingers close around the pole and ripped it out of the sand with a triumphant yell. The race came to a stop as she held it up and everyone saw.

"Damn it. I was so close that time," Cassie cursed.

"Better luck next time," Artemis crooned as she sat back down on the mat, trying to catch her breath.

"That was fast, not as fast as me, but fast," Wally said as he sat down next to her.

"You cheated to be fast," Artemis replied, "I worked for it."

"I worked too," Wally retorted, "My work just so happened in a lab rather than a gym."

"Uh-huh," Artemis just rolled her eyes at him as the rest of the team all sat down for a gossip.

Raven waited until she couldn't see the car anymore and a few more minutes before she picked up her backpack and headed out of the flat. They said they'd be back around 5 to eat before rehearsals, so she just had to be back before then. She headed down to the park she had been at before and found an empty spot by the lake with the ducks where she laid out a blanket and sat down. She'd brought down her script with her, in case she wanted to learn some lines, but she didn't get it out as she sat and just watched the ducks swimming around. It was peaceful, it was as if the rest of the world was melting away.

"Mom," She said, "I think you'd like it here, it's peaceful. And the ducks are rather pretty. Of course, you get used to all the background noise that we didn't have back at Azarath, but it's kind of soothing to hear life all the time. It helps to take your mind off everything that's going wrong. Like Dick's luck with musicals. Apparently, every time he's done a musical someone's almost died. And this is his 13th year, and everyone knows 13's an unlucky number and I was thinking... Mom, what if I'm the bad luck of the 13th show, what if I kill someone here? What if I kill Dick? I know you've never met, but you'd like him, and I don't want to be his downfall this year. I don't want to be anyone's downfall ever. I can't do it again."

A single tear fell down her cheek as she sat there, no response. So she just sat watched them for a little bit longer, nibbling on an orange.

"Raven?" She jumped at the voice, for a second thinking it was her mom, but turned to see Kori standing there, "What are you doing here by yourself?"

"Dick and Babs are out for a while," She explained, "I thought I'd come down to the park."

"Do you mind if I sit with you?" She asked.

"Of course not," Raven smiled up at her as she shuffled to make room for the woman, "Why would I?"

"You wouldn't believe it but most people are a little scared of me," Kori joked as she sat down, "Must be something to do with my height."

"And the pure muscle," Raven added with a light punch on Kori's arm, "I've only seen this much muscle on bodybuilders."

"Natural gift," Kori sighed, "So, do you mind me asking something personal?"

"Go for it," Raven replied with a sigh, what's the worst that could happen?

"I noticed you called Dick and Barbara, well, Dick and Babs," She started and Raven turned to look at the woman, "Are they not your parents?"

"Oh, no," Raven said, "Dick found me on the streets and took me in, I just took his surname for the performance. I'm not sure I'm ready to have mine. I'm not sure I even deserve it."

"Can I enquire as to why?" Kori asked.

Raven looked over at Kori and saw the same sympahty she had seen in Dick's eyes. The kind that let you trust someone.

"My father got free," She started, "He destroyed my home. Killed my friends. Killed my mom. He's trapped again now, but I can still hear him."

"Hey, it's going to be okay," Kori said, "I'll let you in on a secret. My parents are dead as well. They died when I was young. But, you learn to survive. It's not easy, and I'm not going to lie, the pain doesn't go away, but you learn to survive. And, I'm not sure if you know, but you can speak to Dick and Babs about this kind of thing. Dick's family died when he was 8. He saw the whole thing. He'd be more than willing to listen to you if that's what you need."

"I didn't know..." Raven trailed off as she looked at Kori.

She seemed untouched, perfect in this life, but her parents were dead too. And Dick, the happy go lucky cop who rescued her, he had watched his entire family die. But they didn't cause the deaths of their home.

"Thank you for being here today," Raven said at last.

"Right place, right time," Kori replied with a sad smile, "And if you ever feel like talking, I'm always here as well. Well, at rehearsals."

"I'll see you this evening," Raven said as she stood up, "I need to get back to the flat now."

"See you then little fighter," Kori said with a salute and headed off.

Artemis had had fun at the team meet up, she often forgot the fun they had together. Her and Wally were heading straight from the beach to rehearsals. They hadn't realised how late they had stayed, but thankfully when they pulled up they weren't late. They quickly moved up to the theatre and headed inside with the crowd. It was scheduled as a catch-up session for Wednesday's, the director picked what he wanted working on from the previous rehearsals and polished it up. Today, it was just going over everything they had done already as there wasn't that much. Artemis took her seat with Dick and the gang, but this time Kori had joined them.

"Is this the one you think likes Dick?" Artemis asked in a whisper to Wally.

"That's the one," He replied in an equally quiet tone and she looked over at her.

She was unusually tall and muscular, which instantly set off alarms in Artemis' head. And as she watched Dick interact with her, she could tell he was suspicious of her too. They sat around for a few moments before going into the dance and recapping what they had done, the only people still sat down was the main cast minus Dick. She watched the performance for a while, they really had made the right choice casting Dick as Beetlejuice as strange as it seemed, but then turned her attention back to Kori. She was talking to Raven in hushed tones, and the two seemed at ease with each other. She tried to listen for what they were talking about but they were too quiet compared to the speakers blasting the soundtrack. But as the rehearsal continued they went into the scenes and Kori and Raven were split up. Eventually, the rehearsal came to a close and everyone headed out to their cars. Artemis watched as Kori just walked off though.

"You think Kori's a bit odd?" Artemis asked once her and Wally were in the car.

"I did some research as best I could," Wally admitted and turned to face Artemis as she drove, "She's moved up from Jump City, and get this, she didn't even exist 4 years ago."

"And she has her eye on Dick," Artemis said, "Whilst seeming to be close with Raven, could something be going on?"

"Let's not jump to conclusions," Wally said, "But keep an eye out, just in case."
