Fright of Their Lives

Dick dropped his keys into the bowl as he entered the house, Babs' were already in there as well, which means he was last home. Again. He moved into the kitchen to see the two girls sat at the bar talking, but Babs came over and gave him a hug when she saw that he had arrived.

"You ready for tonight?" She asked.

"As long as Raven is," He said and looked over to the girl as she nodded, "And after, I've made a reservation down at La Rose for the three of us to have dinner if you're both up to it."

"Of course we are," Babs smiled up the 3-inch height difference and Dick leant down to give her a quick peck on the cheek.

"Cool, I'll come back once we're finished. Raven and I will change into something a little more formal. And we'll head off," He said, "Now, I need to change out of my uniform for this meeting and we'll head off."

He quickly threw on a plain brown jumper and jeans and jumped into the car, Raven in the passenger seat in her own blue top and jeans. The drive there was filled with small conversation, mostly Dick asking Raven how her day had been and her telling him about how she had spent most of it inside the flat. They pulled up to the theatre and Dick parked next to Artemis' car and the pair headed up. Most of the seats were taken but Dick spotted Wally waving them over from the old team spot, most the team present there as well.

"Dick, long time no see my friend," Kaldur said as he sat down, "And who is this beautiful young lady you bring with you?"

"Kaldur, this is Raven. Raven, this is Kaldur," Dick introduced the pair and they shook hands, "And this," He continued indicating the disguised Martian, "Is Megan."

"I heard my name," She said as she turned to face them, her eyes lighting up when she saw them, "Dick, hi. Who's this?"

"Raven," Raven answered for him, "It's a pleasure to meet you."

"And you," Megan smiled down at the girl as the director, Glynn, took the stage.

"Welcome Gotham cast of Beetlejuice the Musical," He called and a cheer went up through the theatre, "Let's get down to business, shall we? First up, everyone's scripts are here, if you could collect one each before you leave. Second, rehearsal schedules are this pile, they tell you whose needed for each day and for how long. Third, everyone gets two free tickets to opening night performance reserved and front row, you'll have to collect those from me. And finally, before you leave tonight everyone needs to get measured and list any allergy's to our costume and make-up team. Alright, everyone, let's get this show on the road."

"Raven, if you head over to get costume and make-up first I'll pick up your script and timetable for you," Dick said and she quickly walked over to Marie, the head costume designer.

Dick moved over to pick up a script, they were quite large and heavy, and two timetables as he scanned them over. Rehearsals were running almost every day up until opening night, this must be a pretty full-on show. He headed over to Glynn next.

"Dick, nice to see you're still going with these things," Glynn greeted as he saw Dick, "What's it now? 12,13 years?"

"God only knows," Dick smirked as he took the tickets, "Do you mind if I pick up Raven's as well?"

"Raven," Glynn smiled as he handed over her tickets, "I didn't know you had a daughter."

"Technically I don't," Dick explained, "We've taken her off the streets, no idea how long she's going to be staying, just long enough for this show as a minimum."

"Shouldn't you have a child license or something for that?" Glynn asked.

"I'm a cop," Dick smirked, "I can do whatever I want," With that, he moved over to costume and make-up to see them finishing off Raven.

He quickly had his measurements taken and the two of them headed to pick up Barbara.

"Alright, formal wear for this evening please," Dick called after her as she headed into her bedroom and he headed into his to see Babs and had to stop for a moment.

Her red hair, usually in a messy bun, was tied in a high ponytail, letting it fall in waves of fire, her green eyes were accentuated by a light dabbing of mascara and she wore a slim fit dress which came to her knees in the most gorgeous shade of yellow he had ever seen.

"What? Never seen a girl before?" Babs joked as she turned to see him staring.

"This is going to be a long night," Dick groaned as he searched through his wardrobe and pulled out one of his more casual suits, light grey with a red tie and pointed-toe shoes to match the points of Babs' heels.

"You'll survive," Babs smirked as she headed out of the room and Dick changed.

When he came back into the kitchen Raven was waiting as well, dressed up in a black dress that came about halfway down her shin, her hair falling in their natural ringlets and heels that took her from a tiny 5'4" to 5'7".

"May the stunningly beautiful ladies please get in the car and prepare the have the night of your lives," Dick said with an exaggerated bow and the three of them headed off to dinner.

Wally collapsed on the sofa later that night with an exhausted Artemis next to him.

"Well, it looks nice," She said.

"Every time I look at that chair the only thing I'm going to remember is trying to get it through that door," He sighed.

"But you did it," Artemis said, "Eventually."

He just let out a breathy chuckle as he looked around their lounge, it had gone from a large empty room to homely. The sofa had been placed to face the flat screen on the left of the wall, and a few chairs set up near the large window by a bookshelf. The fireplace had a few logs in it but probably wasn't going to be lit until winter came and next to it sat a small space where they were hoping to put a dog bed one day. Once they'd gotten over Brutus that is.

"Want to head to bed now?" Wally asked after they'd just sat there for a while.

"Maybe you could take up the offer from our first day which you still owe me," Artemis said, trailing a finger up his chest, "What do you say?"

"Sounds fun," Wally said and pulled her up to the bedroom.

Dick and Raven were the first of the cast to arrive at the rehearsals on Monday and headed straight up to the theatre to see Meghan setting up for dance rehearsals. The schedule had said that Lydia wasn't needed but Babs was still at work and he didn't want to leave her home alone again. He'd been doing that too much, plus she seemed to get on well with his friends.

"Raven's not needed today," Meghan said as she spotted to two of them.

"I didn't want to leave her home alone again," Dick explained, "She won't be any trouble."

"Fine," She said, "But no distracting whilst we're rehearsing."

"Barbara's going to come to pick her up when she finishes work," Dick said, "It'll be fine."

"I already said that," Meghan muttered as she headed back over to the stage, "Anyway, we're going to set Whole Being Dead Thing today, so you won't be overdoing anything because you're singing but don't think you can relax."

Dick huffed out a breath as he sat down next to Raven to wait for the rest of the cast to show. He and Meghan hadn't got along particularly well since the first show when she took over from Victoria, he didn't know why. Might have been something to do with the whole Rose and Slade fiasco though. Most likely. It was a few more minutes before Wally and Artemis arrived and took their seats next to him.

"Got those first rehearsal jitters again," Wally said, "But on the plus side, I don't think anyone's life is in danger this time."

"Don't speak too soon, we were well into rehearsals every time when it happened," Artemis smirked.

"What?" The three adults turned to face Raven.

"It's a long story," Dick said, "But, in basics, every time we've done one of these musicals at least one of us have had a near-death experience."

"And this is the 13th year," Wally crooned, "Someone is going to die."

"Look, it's unlikely it's going to happen again this year," Artemis said after she'd slapped Wally, "We're all perfectly safe."

Kori had watched Dick all rehearsals, there was just something about him she couldn't place. For a human, he seemed better. And as she watched, so did his friends. But she tried not to let those thoughts distract her as she flew over Gotham City to look out for any crime. And she was not disappointed.

Almost immediately she saw a man and a woman in one of the alleys, the former with a knife to his throat. She touched down behind them, the petrified man's fear only growing at the sight of the yellow woman. She stepped forward and lightly tapped the woman on the shoulder.

"What?" She barked and turned her head.

Brown eyes met those of solid green and the knife clattered to the floor. The man wasted no time running as Kori took the pleading woman's head in her hands and twisted. The snap resonated through the air and Kori let the body drop to the floor. She heard movement above her and primed a starbolt, searching for the source, but she found none. She quickly took back to the sky and began searching again.

Dick had enjoyed the dinner last night with the girls, and he'd say that they had enjoyed too. Not only had they had fun, but Dick had also been able to analyse how Raven ate when she was out ready for meeting the Bat-family this afternoon. And it seemed good enough to impress even Alfred, wherever she came from, they hadn't skipped etiquette.

"You both ready? We're going to miss the train," Dick called into the flat as he fingered through his keys.

They both came around the corner together, dressed in their casual wear for the day, and the three walked down to the train station. Dick watched Babs as they sat on the train, she seemed so peaceful just looking out the window.

Her expression was unguarded, a rare occurrence after working with the police and Bruce. And even rarer was that it had no anger behind it as she usually had. No anger at the criminals out there, just an appreciation of the natural world that they lived in. It was only a half-hour before they pulled into Gotham station and the three travellers headed up to the pick-up point. Dick noticed the limo straight away, and a large grin split his face at the man standing in front of it.

"Alfie, you still going strong?" He asked as he brought in the butler for a hug.

"Of course Mister Grayson," Alfred replied, "Now if you would all like to get in the car I'll bring you up to the mansion."

Dick ushered Babs and Raven inside, the younger seemed amazed by the grandeur of it, and as soon as the door had closed Alfred began driving. It was only a couple of minutes later they pulled up outside the mansion and the look of wonder on Raven's face was enough to make the adults all smile. Once inside Alfred made quick work of gathering everyone and soon they were all sat at the table.

"Okay, everyone this is Raven," Dick started once they'd all sat down and she gave everyone a quick wave, and then he began listing around the table "Raven, this is everyone. Jason, Tim, Steph, Damian, Cass, Bruce, Selina, Katherine, Alfred, Terry and Duke. Of course, Ace and our cow are in another room."

Raven didn't say anything, just stared at everyone in shock.

"You have a cow?" Her first words took Dick by surprise, "What's it called?"

"Bat-Cow," Damian answered for him, "And she's a she."

"Cool," She said and then Alfred invited them all to eat.

"Dick, I need to talk to you afterwards," Bruce said and he looked up at the serious face of his mentor, "It's important."

Dick nodded to show he heard and the socialising begun.

----------

"What's the problem?" Dick asked as Babs and Raven got in the car to head back home.

"We've got a new killer on the loose," Bruce explained, "And she's not human. Yellow skin, red hair, must be well over 6 foot and seemed to have no mercy at all. Watch yourself."

"I will," Dick said, "Love you, dad. See you soon."
