⋪9. Broken Expectations

Ok Idk if this should be a warning, but this chapter might be slightly angsty

Author's POV

Exams. Just hearing the name of that thing, you start panicking, well, most of us. There are some weirdos who love taking exams, but let's not talk about them. Exams are the worst enemies of dumb humans like some of us. The more efficiently you study the better grades you get, well unless you study the wrong thing, then...But there are still people who study hard but do not get good grades, for them, it's just bad luck that's beside them, or maybe something else.

Namjoon was panic studying. His finals were in a week and he was NOT ready for it. There was too much to study and too much to memorise. His morals can obviously not allow him to cheat in the exam or may I say that he was being a sissy. But still, he didn't want to cheat, but at this point, he could see no way out except for just studying or becoming a monk and giving up everything in life.

To Namjoon, this just felt like driving a car on an empty highway with no speed limits. But the car's on fire and there are thousands of terrorists shooting at him from behind with machine guns and endless stocks of bullets. Jin was helping Namjoon memorise some things and giving him some tips on how to not panic and still remember everything during exams.

"Ok, tell me, have you finished and memorised your outlines," Jin asked. "I DON'T KNOW! I LITERALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT I HAVE TO DO ANYMORE!" Namjoon shouted. "OK, ok, take deep breaths in and deep breaths out." Namjoon followed. "Yes, just like that. Now, tell me, what do you still have to do? Check the list that you made just now." Namjoon calmed down, rubbed his forehead and checked the checklist. "I have finished memorising my outlines. I completed all my case studies. And my goal for studying for 12 hours has been achieved as well." "So what do you have to do next?" Jin asked although he already knew.

Namjoon sighed while closing his eyes and opening them again. "I have to go and take a break." "And how are you going to do that?" "By either taking a nap, watching kdrama, or going to take a walk in the park?" "What do you think is the best option after you have been staring at your computer and books endlessly? "taking a nap or going out for a walk." "What do you want to do then?" "Go outside for a walk?" "Ok let's do that. Don't forget to grab your phone and money." "Yes, mother!" "Bruh, I ain't your mama!" Jin said in a sassy voice."

"You are more caring than my actual mother, though," Namjoon said. Jin didn't reply and just kept quiet.

Namjoon walked through the street art alley with his half-eaten corn dog. He admired the walls covered with various colours and doodles. He loved the vibes that were coming out of them. "It's sometimes nice to take a break, isn't it?" "Yeah, you were right. Sometimes I feel like you are my personal therapist and then sometimes my mother." Jin chuckled. "Yeah, I'm aware." "You know, when I die, I promise I will help you with whatever you're trying to get back. I will still help you now...if it's possible."

Jin smiled, but Namjoon obviously didn't see it. "I appreciate it." "Anytime" Namjoon smiled. "So whenever you are ready, we can go back," Jin said.

Just like that Namjoon went back home and studied his ass off. And soon it was the week of the exam. Namjoon nearly had a panic attack in the middle of his first exam which was criminology. It was just too hard for him, but he got through it. He got through every exam and did the very best he could.

Now it was the day of the result. Every single law student was mentally panicking and waiting for their results. The result website of the university was basically being reloaded millions of times by each of the law students. Namjoon was literally sitting alone in a dark corner of the library with Jin while chewing his fingers due to nervousness. He was for sure going to have a panic attack. He loaded the website again, and his breath hitched.

The results were out...He quickly scrolled to name but instantly covered his eyes. "Please, look at it for me first. Tell me that I didn't fail!" He said while his anxiety was building up. If he fails, he is seriously screwed. It will be the time when he will have to mentally say goodbye to the world.

Jin looked at the result and smiled. "You most definitely didn't fail!" "Are you sure?" "100 percent" Namjoon hesitantly removed his hand and opened his eyes. His overall GPA was...3.5!!!!!!!!!!!! "OMG!" Namjoon nearly screamed but covered his mouth. He squealed so hard out of excitement, though. "J-jin, I can't...believe this! Oh my God!" Namjoon was so happy that he started crying. "I want to hug you so bad, Jindo!" Namjoon said, giving Jin a new nickname. "Me too!" "Bro! I need to thank you so bad! Thank you so much for helping me. Without you, I wouldn't have gotten this far."

"I did nothing," Jin said. "Of course you did. If you weren't there then I would have wasted the majority of my time panicking and crying because of the thought that I would fail." Jin laughed. "Should we go to your favourite restaurant and after that get some boba?" Jin asked. "You don't even need to ask!" Namjoon said before grabbing his bag and standing up to leave the library.

At home in the evening

Namjoon came home with a huge grin on his face. This was almost the best day of his life so far. He got such a good grade! He could easily go to a very well known law firm for an internship. I mean, not the most elite law firms in the country, but still! At least he came this far!

Namjoon entered the living room and saw them all talking and laughing. "Mom, dad, Hyung, and noona! I need to tell you all something!" Namjoon said with excitement in his voice. Nobody listened to him. But Namjoon kept talking. "As I said before, I had my finals. And the results are out today!"

The room went silent. Not a single voice echoed. "And my GPA is...3.5!!!!! Can you believe that?! I got such a good grade! Even I didn't believe that it was possible!" Namjoon cheered loudly. But there was a polar opposite reaction from the others.

A huge frown grew on his parents' faces. Why were they like this? "What? You got 3.5? Didn't I tell you that you were supposed to get at least 3.8? That was your minimum! And what did you get? 3.5! How are you even proud of that?!" His father shouted. Namjoon flinched at the sudden outburst. He did NOT expect this at all.

"Aren't you ashamed of yourself?! This is the worst grade I have ever seen in my life." Namjoon's mother said angrily. Jin was getting mad at the number of demands these people had against Namjoon. They weren't even proud of the fact that he got a fairly good grade. They were just mad that he didn't get the grades they wanted. Like, why don't they get the grades themselves if they are just that picky! Jin couldn't hold it anymore.

"Ma'am, don't you think that this is an irrelevant reason for being so hard at him?" Jin said, totally forgetting that he cannot be seen nor heard. Namjoon ignored what Jin said. "Mom...d-dad. I did my v-very best. I really did. I studied every single day with whatever I had in me. Can't you at least appreciate that?" Namjoon said with a broken voice. He didn't want to cry and be called a drama queen again.

"So what if you tried your very best? You didn't achieve the goal we gave you! And who are you to tell us what to appreciate?!" His mother spoke again. "You have truly disappointed us, Kim Namjoon." His father said, pinching his nose bridge with frustration. "I honestly don't know what to do with you!" His mother said.

And then out of nowhere, his father suddenly spoke. "Get out!"

Namjoon's eyes widened. "Get out of this house! Don't even dare coming here until tomorrow night. Leave all of your belongings here. I don't want to see your face, so leave." Namjoon was shocked, very shocked. He didn't say anything but just did as he was told. He eventually left the house after giving his parent's one last look. Yes, he should have said something, but he just...didn't have the energy to fight back anymore. He was already devastated enough from what just happened, that just didn't have the stamina to say anything back to them.

He thought that he should be happy with what he did. He thought that he should be proud of what he got. That's what his counsellor used to tell him. 'Be proud of the things that you have done in life. Do what you can do and just keep trying.' But maybe he shouldn't be proud of it. Maybe he shouldn't be proud of anything that he has done in life. Why even bother to be, when in the end he was just going to be shouted at for something that he did.

Everything comes with a price. Happiness, freedom, everything. Namjoon learned this through the hard and ruthless ways of his parent's. Namjoon had the bare minimum will left inside him after what just happened. He didn't know what to do.

He walked through the heavy rainfall. Such a great and dramatic time for the rain to pour. It felt like a K-drama. Walking through the rain while crying your eyes out because of something sad. Namjoon didn't cry, though. He was tired. He was exhausted from the amount of times he had cried all his life. It was too tiring, too painful.

"Why do I have to suffer so much? Why me? Why can't I just...have a normal life, with slight happiness." Namjoon spoke out while looking up at the dark sky. "No one can walk through the pathway of flowers all their lives. We all have to suffer, whether it's for a short period of time or long." Jin said "But...I have been like this...for almost 20 years! How much longer do I have to go through this? Will I be like this until my last breath!?" Namjoon shouted and tears poured down his cheeks, getting mixed with the raindrops that already soaked his face.

"Everything has a price and you know that. You are just paying the price of what's ahead of you. Life is just like this, practical, hard, and merciless. It tests us, sees us, and pushes us to our limits. Some of us, unfortunately, fall behind, but some of us keep going on with thorns on our feet, stabbing us till the point we want to give up. Learning from your misery is the only thing you can do in this pain. It will bring you the wisdom that everyone longs for. Experience and wisdom are the greatest forces that make us powerful." Jin spoke again.

Namjoon sighed and slumped down in front of an alley wall. Why does life hate him so much? Is he actually going to get the happiness that he is paying so much for?

As he was staring down at the wet puddly ground, he noticed something hovering over him. There were no more raindrops falling over his drenched body. He looked up to see a dark silhouette holding an umbrella over his head. Namjoon, for some reason, instantly assumed that he was going to get killed. "Why? Are you here to kill me? Well do so, cause I don't care at all, I never did." Namjoon mumbled silently

"Hyung, why the hell, would I want to kill you?" A familiar voice spoke. Namjoon's eyes widened. He knew this voice! "J-jin?" He stuttered. "That's me!"
