≶6. The Oath

Now this chapter kind of contains a little bit of heavy topics. Not too heavy topics but I don't want anyone saying that I should have put a warning.

Author's POV

A brand new day! Ok, not as exciting as I make it sound. But still, a brand new day for Joon. He was right now in a mock trial. It's basically an educational practical that is based on trials that have happened in the past. It is intended to give the feel of how actual trials work. Its goal is to give an experience to law students like Namjoon and help them give a better understanding.

Anyways, so he was in the audience stand, watching his fellow classmates participate in the mock trial. Mostly the smartest kids were chosen as prosecutors, attorneys, judges and more. I mean they also tried their hardest to impress the professor, so they can actually be involved in the practical.

Namjoon looked at them with boredom in his eyes. He was too tired to listen to the mess that they were talking about. So he decided to shift to his auto-pilot mode, aka zone out and think about whatever the hell wanted to. His memory brought him back to the weekend nights. The nights that he spent with his new friend. A total of 3 nights actually.

All of them were extremely fun. It's been extremely long since he has felt so happy with someone in real life other than his k-drama characters. Even to Namjoon, it was surprising. Compared to all the living friends he had, he had never gotten this close to them in just three days. And then there comes a friendly ghost that almost becomes his BFF in a short period of time.

For some reason, it felt nice. Having someone to talk to felt nice. On the second day, he didn't expect the ghost to come but he did. Then they talked just like that. On the evening of Sunday, he was scared that he would have to stay up late to talk to his friend but no, the ghost cared more about him. He came to him right after he was done with dinner. He said-, I mean, wrote that he didn't want Namjoon to be up until late because he had to wake up in the morning.

The two talked about a lot of random things. A lot of people said that ghosts are scary, ghosts are evil, this and that. But the one he met, he was even kinder than humans, well...at a first impression. Namjoon didn't know what he was like in his spare time. Maybe he is a ghost that kills people in their sleep and pretends as if nothing happened later on. Or maybe, he is actually clean.

Namjoon zoned back in and started taking a few notes for some points that the prosecutor mentioned. He was writing until he started feeling slightly cold. He looked behind him just to check if the air cond was directly pointing at him, but no.

He didn't think much about it, he just wore a hoodie and continued writing. Thought he might have...thought about his friend...just a little bit. A very little bit. But he quickly quit the thought because it wasn't possible. From what he has heard, ghosts usually appear during the night and his friend only comes to his house during that time. So there is no way it was him.

This was not until the same handwriting started appearing on his book again. His eyes widened, he looked around to see if anyone was around him and if they saw him. Well, as usual, he was at the most back bench with no one sitting on that row and neither with him.

His head snapped back to his book and saw the words, "studying hard aren't you?" Namjoon took out a small sticky note and pencil. Then he started scribbling some words in his most panicked handwriting. "What are you doing here?!" He wrote. "Nothing, just accompanying my friend who is looking like a total loner. :))" "Bro, how even in the world-. Anyways, just don't write anything right now. I need to take some notes and focus. Let's talk during lunch break." "Okiee! (*^-^*)"

Namjoon sighed and chucked at his act. Before focusing back he wrote something. "Do I actually look like a lonely loser???" "Focus on your lesson! ヾ(≧へ≦)〃" "Fine," Namjoon wrote back and focused on his lesson. After a while, he along with all the students heard the professor's voice through the speakers. "Ok everybody, good job with it today. The next mock trial will be held next week and new people will be given the roles. It's lunch now, so you can all go. Well done!"

Namjoon stood up and stretched his body. He was still feeling cold so he guessed that the ghost was still with him. He then went to the library. He wasn't in the mood of eating right now.

As he was walking he saw something appearing on his sticky notes. "Aren't you going to eat? :(((" "I mean, I am not hungry and I will grab a snack on the way to work." Namjoon wrote "You better not starve yourself the whole day! Or I will be very sad. ;-;" Namjoon cooed and whispered out a small 'I promise I will eat'

Namjoon sat down on the floor. and took out his personal notebook which was way bigger to write on. Namjoon put his bag and books beside him. There were many chairs but Namjoon was sitting in a very hidden corner of the library so there weren't any chairs here. I mean, there were some people who knew about this corner but they didn't waste their time coming here due to it being so far in the huge library.

"You know, I really didn't expect you to be here. Especially during the day and my lesson." "Well, I mean sorry about that. ╯︿╰ But I just wanted to help you not feel lonely" The other wrote. "No need to be sorry. But I didn't know that ghosts can be around during the day." "Well, you see, there are types of ghosts. So some of them can not come out during the day. Then there are types, like me, that can be out at both day and night." "Oh wow! Really?! That's so cool" Namjoon quietly exclaimed." "I will tell you about this some other day because it's a very long topic." "Oh, no problem."

"So...how many more lectures do you have after this?" The ghost asked. "Wait a second. Let me check my schedule. Oh! I don't have classes anymore." "Oh, nice! Then we can spend more time here!" "Yeah! Btw, can you watch K-dramas?" "Of course o(*^@^*)o" Yup, Namjoon decided to watch K-dramas with a ghost. I still can't believe this guy.

Evening

Namjoon entered his house with his fellow invisible friend. He was in a good mood. He didn't even feel a little bit of loneliness, whether it was in lectures or work. He had a fun time reading the jokes the ghost wrote. He didn't know that his friend was that funny.

So yeah, back to him. They entered and Namjoon took off his shoes. He now understood that whenever he felt sudden coldness, it was his friend. He walked into the hallway and then to the kitchen to grab a quick snack. As he went inside, he saw his mother sitting on a chair in the kitchen. She was...not in a good state. Beside her, he saw more than 3 empty bottles of alcohol. She was drunk.

She doesn't usually drink unless she had a rough day at a trial. He was guessing that it was exactly the same reason for why she is so drunk. He honestly didn't like seeing his mother like that. But every human has a way of letting out their emotions. And for his mother, alcohol was the solution.

"Mother," He called out. His mother saw him but just hazily ignored him. "Mother, please stop drinking. You already had a lot!" "Who are you to tell me to stop!?" She shouts "Your son!" Namjoon says in a less calm voice. "Which one!?" She was so drunk. "Your youngest son." He sighed after saying that.

"Oh, Kim Namjoon!" She said and started speaking again. "Yah! Kim Namjoon...come here." She said in an extremely drunk voice. Namjoon hesitantly went near her. "What is it?" "Why did you...have to be so bad at everything? Huh?" ]She sounded less aggressive yet sad. Namjoon looked away. She started speaking in a quieter voice. "Do you know how much everyone nags me about you being so dumb? They say that I didn't look after your education, I was the one who made you so dumb." Namjoon sighed.

"Mother-" "WHY!? WHY WERE YOU BORN?! I hate you! I really hate you for being how you are! Why do you have to...always make me get insulted." She slammed her head on the table. Namjoon was shocked at the sudden outburst, he felt a familiar lump in his throat. "S-stop...saying all of that. I know you love me!" He shouted. "NO, I DON'T! I never did!" She shouted back. Namjoon's heart broke...again. "W-what are you...saying?" He said quietly. "You know what? Just go kill yourself. I am tired of having you with me anyways. Just end it for once and for all. That's the only good thing you will ever be able to do." She said.

Namjoon felt cold in his right arm. He was still here, the whole time. Namjoon was...embarrassed...at that fact. He was embarrassed that the ghost witnessed this. Though, he didn't know why he was embarrassed. Maybe because his only current friend, witnessed his misery. I mean he was a ghost...but still.

He ran to his room and shut the door loudly. He looked down with an expressionless face. There was nothing shown on his face but there was too much done in his actions. He clenched his left hand into a tight ball, nails digging into his skin, nearly piercing the fragile layer. His right hand continuously punched the wall, slow yet hard. When that didn't get his anger out enough, he started banging his head against the wall. Again, slow yet hard.

He stopped when he saw some words appear beside him. "Banging your head against the wall won't do anything but just hurt you." Namjoon ignored him and continued doing what he was doing. "It's better to scream into a pillow, you know." The ghost wrote again. Namjoon got annoyed. "I don't need your damn advice!" "A friend is supposed to help another friend in their rough times."

"But do you even think of me as a friend?" Namjoon asked. "You are a ghost, and I am a human. You are probably just using me. Cozing me to trust you. And when it's the right time, you will attack."

"If I wanted to do that, I would have done that the first time we met." Namjoon sighed and sat down on the floor facing the wall. "In my life, I was the one who was used by others. Do you think that after death, I will have the audacity to do the same to others? Even though I know how much it hurts to be used?" The ghost wrote.

"Though...I am sure...that one day, you will leave me as well. For whatever reasons, but you will...just like the others." Namjoon said quietly. "I can't and I won't." "How can I believe you?" "The poem that was written in your book, was written by me, which I am sure you would have guessed. That poem was a promise that I made to you. 'Like a shadow, I will be with you...forever." Namjoon felt something inside him light up. He didn't know what it was.

"Now I oath, if I break this promise, leave you forever and betray you, I shall be beaten with cruelty and then given the worst death in the entire universe."

You know that he was being serious because this was written in bold letters with a crimson red colour which nearly looked like fresh blood. Namjoon glanced at his watch and it was suddenly exactly 12 am. This dude was just being too serious but extremely dumb at the same time for obvious reasons.

"But aren't you already dead?" "My soul will be killed, the thing that can take rebirth. It will be destroyed along with any future family lines, they all will all be destroyed. The killing of a soul is 100x worse than a grosestic torture of a human."

"Y-you are lying about oath though, right? It's a joke right?" Namjoon asked with panic. "I have taken an oath under the full moon. So if I go against it, I shall be actually killed." Namjoon was surprised. "But...what if I leave you?" "You wouldn't. I know you wouldn't." "How are you so sure? You barely know me." Namjoon said. " I just know that you are not capable of leaving someone, who is just as willing...as you. Just as sincere as you."

"But why though, why do this much, just for a stupid friendship?" "No friendship is stupid. It just depends on how the people in it treat it" "I asked why?" "Due to the fact that you are just like me. We broken-hearted are the ones that can look out for each other. Because we are the only ones that can truly fix each other and watch each other's backs.

Namjoon sighed again. He smiled. Maybe he really got himself a best friend. He learned to not let his guards down for anyone. But, you can say that Namjoon believed in YOLO. Maybe he should try just...one last time and truly feel the love of friendship. "You better not be lying or you will be rotting in hell." "I am not." This made Namjoon feel a little bit better. Something inside him felt new, as if something just grew.

A sudden question popped up in Namjoon's mind. "Hey? I never asked this but...what is your name?"

"My name is Seokjin, Kim Seokjin. But you can call me Jin"
