Ch.5 The Park

"I've got it!" Noah said loudly shoving his paper in my face. "No, Miller, that's incorrect. Though I love the amount of unnecessary work you did." I said looking at the assortment of weird animals scribbled lazily on the paper.

Me and Noah were in the library reviewing calculus. You guessed it! It was our tutoring session. Mrs.Johnson was right! He is really bad at math! He also keeps messing up pi the number with pie the desert.

"Also Miller, your calculator is on the wrong mode." I say. Noah looks at his calculator like it betrayed him and glared at it, but then he returns to his happy self and laughs. But then he quickly stopped when people started shushing him.

"Lets just look at another question," I say pretending not to notice. "By the way," Noah pipes "why do you always call me Miller?" I'm actually startled a little by this question. "Well, I don't know actually. It's more formal I guess?" I try to make a reason. I'm pretty good at lying. The cops even believed me. I shiver at the thought.

Noah cocks his head to the left a little. "But why?" I look at him with my neutral face. "We only met two days ago. We're not the best of friends." Are we friends? "Actually we're not even friends." I say nonchalantly. "We can be." Noah says softly. "Huh?" I ask. "Friends I mean. I want to be your friend." He says.

"Your calculator is still on the wrong mode." I say changing the subject. Noah quickly changes the mode to the correct one. "So can we be friends?" Noah asks.

I pretend to decide by tapping my chin and staring at the ceiling. When I look at Noah again, I find it amusing to see how he's so excited, he's practically bouncing up and down in his seat trying to contain his excitement. "Sure why not. But on one condition," I say smiling "complete the math question!" I point at the textbook. He then gets to work.

I suck in a breath. This is a really big decision for me. Although I should be happy, and I am, I'm also frightened. What's going to happen when he finds out about my secret? I can't let that happen. If anyone finds out, I'm doomed. The police would find me and take away my father. Stop thinking about it! Focus on tutoring.

"I finished!" Noah says. I take his paper and review it. "Its correct?!" I'm astonished at how fast he solved it. "Noah, is that a four or a three?" Noah ignores my question and his face lights up, how is it possible that he's even happier? "You finally said my name!" He yelled. Noah's statement is followed by a bunch of people shushing him. Oops! I didn't even realize myself! "We're friends aren't we?" I say.

Revisions and explanations later, the clock reaches 4:00 and our tutoring session is over. I find out that Noah's apartment isn't too far from mine so we walk together.

"Wait, what's that?!" Noah says stopping suddenly. I look to where he's pointing. It's an abandoned park with a metal fence around it. Some of the wires are snapped and the inside is mostly just dead grass and trees. There's one interesting thing about the park and it's the three story house in the middle. It has a broken door and cracked windows. Vines are growing all around it and it's empty. But the spookiest part about it is the red splotches in the front door. I don't want to know how that happened.

I frown. "I don't know exactly, some college students like to go there to have beer and smoke." I say "They called it the flophouse." I start pulling his arm to get away from the house, I don't like the vibe I'm getting from it. "I wanna see it!" Noah says before he runs there, bringing me with him. "We could just climb over the fence and take a look inside the house." he exclaims. "Uh, Noah?" I say. He turns around to look and me. "I don't think I can." I point to my green knee length skirt. "Right."

Noah looks around the gate, squinting, he seems to be searching for something. "Sorry Noah, but unless you can find a clean pair of pants on the fence that fits me, I can't go with you." I say rolling my eyes. "I think you still can." Noah said. "Really, how?" I question folding my arms sarcastically. Noah's face lit up for the millionth time. He poked and prodded the fence for a while before ripping it open with his bare hands making a loud clanging sound in the process. My jaw dropped and my arms fall to my sides. "Lets go Amy." He said taking my arm and leading me to the deserted park.

When we get near the building I finally recollect my senses. "How did you do that?" I ask still a little astounded. "Do what?" Noah says looking at me from behind his shoulder. "Um, hello! You just broke open the fence."I exclaim. Noah smirks at me "I'm stronger than I look." Then he also rips open the door with a jerk of his arm. Note to self: never stay near him when he's angry. Can this guy even get angry?

As we get closer to the building, I start getting anxious. "Noah, I think this is illegal." I say "We are literally breaking into a house." Noah shrugs and takes a look at himself in a nearby mirror. "Well, I didn't see any 'keep out' signs so I think we're good."

I ignore whatever bad feeling I had about the house and look around. There is graffiti on the walls saying people's names and weird faces, and pictures of cooking supplies. I wonder if this used to be a restaurant. There are a lot of tables with moth eaten cloths. there is a cracked mirror that has only one part of its frame clinging from it.

"Do you think this place was a restaurant?" I say running my fingers over the rough antique paintings. "I don't know," Noah says picking up a rolling pin. "Let's just roll with it." He chuckles at his own joke. I roll my eyes, but I can't hide my smile.

"We should get going," I say looking at my phone "It's 4:30 and I need to start my homework. Plus there is a history test tomorrow that I do not want to fail."

"Can't we explore the upstairs?" Noah pleads. I frown looking at the rickety crumbly stairs. "I don't know, the stairs don't look sturdy and I think I say cockroaches bigger than my finger." I say starting to walk out. "Well your fingers aren't that big." Noah teases. "Hey! They may not be big, but they can still make bruises so be careful with your words." I shout trying to contain my laughter. It was true though, if I lined up my hand with anyone, there was a 99.9% possibility mine was smaller.

We get out of the park covering up the rip in the fence with leaves (thank goodness it's autumn) and when we have to go our separate ways, we exchange phone numbers to schedule the next tutoring session.

I go inside my apartment and get a text from Olivia.

There's something important I need to tell you.
