Chapter Six

I was hauling ass down that dim hallway. I tried to go as fast as I can while keeping quiet. I basically threw myself up the stairs when I reached them. I made it back to the middle level of the building and my eyes darted around. The big dark building was silent besides my breathing. I only hesitated for a moment before dashing up the stairs to where Harrison was supposed to be. It was brighter up there but I saw no sight of him.

"Harrison!" I whispered as loud as I could.

I jogged to the right where it opened up into a big lounge. I felt a small relief when I saw him peeking into a doorway. I ran up to him without a word and grabbed his hand tightly and began to drag him.

"woah what is going on?" He asked.

"We have to get the fuck out of here now" I demanded.

Harrison seemed to note my seriousness and kept quiet. His hand stayed tightly clasped in mine as we got to the bottom of the stairs and took off sprinting towards the door where we entered. With only the few scattered lights in the building, we finally reached the door and I shoved it open with all my fore and practically fell out. Harrison stuck right behind me and we dashed to the car, our feet pounding the pavement loudly, he unlocked the car and we both got in and slammed our doors behind us. Without a moment of hesitation the car was on and we peeled out of the parking lot. The only sound besides the engine was both of our heavy breathing.

We sat there panting in the dark as Harrison floored it.

We're sitting at our familiar table at Auggies, the glowing neon open sign buzzed above us. Nobody else was there besides two workers. Harrison sighed and set down his sandwich.

"I don't even know what to say" he muttered.

I had been staring at my lap but I let my eyes flick up to meet his.

"me neither" I said.

"what do we do now huh?" He asked.

I snapped me head up to look at him.

"I don't know. why would I know? I'm freaking out Harrison" I snapped at him.

He didn't say anything, just gazed at me.
He knew I felt bad for being harsh.

"We can't tell anyone, don't you know how they'll look at us?" I said panicked.

"who is they?"

"Everyone!" I shouted.

There was silence again.
Harrison stood up and tossed his balled up napkin on his empty tray.

"I think we should go home" was all he said before dumping his trash and heading to the door. I sighed and followed him. The drive was silent.
We pulled up in front of my building and he put the car in park.

"I'll see you tomorrow or something" I muttered before exiting the car.

The cold wind bit at any exposed skin it could find.

I was walking away when his voice startled me.

"Harper come back" He shouted.

I turned around and walked back to his car, standing by the open window.

"what" I said.

"are you sure you want to sleep alone tonight?" He asked seriously.

I shrugged.

"your roommate is gone remember? do you want me to come up?" He asked.

"no It's alright, you don't have to worry about me" I smiled at him.

He didn't respond he just put the car back in drive and started going. I turned and started heading home.

Once again, I didn't make it far before my name was called again.

"Harper, harper!"

I turned to see Harrison jogging towards me from the parking lot.

"you couldn't wait for me to park the car?" He joked, eyebrow raised.

"You just drove off and didn't say anything to me! how was I supposed to know you were coming!?" I practically whined.

Harrison laughed and threw his arm around my shoulder.

"Don't get so worked up darlin" He remarked.

We made it upstairs and into my room. I had my lamp plugged in and the way-too-fluorescent overhead light was off. The room had a comforting ambiance.

"Turn around i'm changing" I stated.

"What? Harper, we've seen each other change a million times" He replied.

"Turn" I demanded.

"harp"

"Harry"

He huffed and turned the other direction, flipping through a book from my desk.

"I'm decent now" I chirped.

Harrison moved from my desk to my bed, mindlessly playing with a pillow.

"you wanna smoke a blunt before bed?" He asked.

"You know we can't smoke in here" I said as I tied my hair back into a bun.

"c'mon just this once?" He pleaded, his hands in a begging motion.

"The answer is no. We could both get kicked out. you know that's the rule I don't break" I said firmly as I grabbed my toothbrush and paste from a drawer on my desk.

"fine fine fine" He said throwing his hands up in defense.

Harrison began removing his jacket and t shirt and I didn't realize I had zoned out.

"hey no looking, It goes both ways kid" He said with a wink.

I shook my head and scoffed, turning away and exiting my room to go brush my teeth.

When I came back minutes later, Harrison was in my bed wearing just a pair of gym shorts and tube socks. The TV was on and he flicked through the hoard of Netflix shows.

"whaddya want to watch?" He asked.

I shook my head, indicating that I didn't want to pick.

"we're watching thats 70s show" he stated as I climbed into bed beside him.

Harrison scooted over as far as he could to the wall and I slipped under my comforter.

"you're okay, right?" He asked me.

I avoided eye contact and stared to the ceiling.

"I just don't understand" I whispered with a shake of my head.

Harrison smoothed his hair down and looked up at the ceiling too.

"I don't like things I can't explain" I admitted.

That instantly earned a grin from the man beside me.

"Oh really? like I didn't know that?" He rolled his eyes lazily.

I crossed my arms dramatically and pulled the comforter closer to my chin.

"Listen, you have to get some sleep. we'll talk tomorrow. really" He said, running his thumb down my cheek and across my jaw.

I nodded. He was right.
