Chapter 46: Unlikely Ally
It was him.
Standing right in front of them.
The familiar set of crimson ruby eyes bore into them from across the room, over the sea of confused students and yelling. It was impossible to distinguish who was who, and what was going on. But one thing was for certain.
He was back
Katsuki Bakugo stood there in the flesh, surrounded by a fortitude of students. It seemed like the entire class had gathered in that specific location, all having questions and similar emotions. Pushing through the crowd of shouts, Bakugo walked over to Todoroki, Mina and Momo, all stood in awe.
It wasn't like he had changed much. His blonde,explosive, spiky hair still stood on end at its regular length. His characteristic frown was still plastered on his face, creating a sense of familiarity. However, it was clear that a lot had happened in the months that he was gone. Scars cascaded along his defined arms, all a light pink hue. He was taller, though only slightly, with a more muscular physique. He also had small scars on his arms that almost looked like burn marks, most likely caused by the sub-zero temperatures.
"Hey, Icy hot, Raccoon eyes, ponytail, come with me."
Bakugo walked away with them, not even acknowledging any response they could possibly give. Behind them, many of their classmates were all asking Bakugo questions. "Where have you been?" "What happened to you?" "What are you doing here?!" "Get out of here!". A varied degree of questions erupted from the crowd. Bakugo paused, whirled around and yelled: "SHUT THE FUCK UP!"
His classmates quieted down, though unmoving. "Oi, get the fuck out of here." Bakugo said, finally breaking up the crowd, who all walked away. Some were mad, others docile. Bakugo rolled his eyes, and continued walking to the common room, which was basically a living room.
Bakugo opened the doors, taken aback by the sight of the room. Books were torn, thrown on the floor torn and disheveled. The fireplace had long burned out, the ash creating an extra carpet. "What the fuck...?"
"It happened after you left." Momo stepped forward, picking up one of the abandoned books. "People began arguing and using anything to fight each other with. We were banned from using quirks against each other, so they resorted to this. We don't really go in here anymore."
"Arguing?"
"You wouldn't know, but everyone became suspicious of each other after Uraraka...when she was taken away. It became a civil war here."
Bakugo sat on one of the sofas, brushing excess dust of the pillows. "So, you can't use quirks anymore?"
Mina nodded, sitting next to the blonde. "You know what happened with Kaminari right?"
"About how he went crazy?"
"Yeah, but it wasn't just with Uraraka. He began attacking staff and heroes thinking they were all spies. Eventually, they had to disable his quirk after he kept electrocution himself to stay awake. He was scared of being killed when he was asleep."
"And, they don't want any of you to do the same...?"
"Yeah..."
Todoroki sat on the sofa opposite them, a coffee table separating them. "I'll make some tea..." Momo walked over to the teapot in the corner of the room, grabbing cups and a kettle from the cupboard.
"Bakugo, where were you?! You just disappeared out of nowhere, we were worried!" Mina grabbed Bakugo's shoulders, turning him to face her. "Everyone kept saying you joined Izuku or died! Why didn't you say anything?!"
Bakugo sighed, brushing of Mina's arms and turning back to face Todoroki. "I had to train ,and I couldn't be around any of you."
"Why?!"
"If I just kept disappearing, what would you all think? You would suspect me of joining Izuku and arrest me. Then I couldn't defeat him."
"Defeat him?" Todoroki leaned forward, raising an eyebrow slightly. Bakugo sighed in reply, leaning back and looking at the ceiling. "There's a storm coming."
"Huh...?"
"Izuku. He's planning something. And it's bad."
"How could you know?" Momo walked over, putting cups on the table and locking the rooms door. "Have you talked to him?"
"No. But, his activity has basically stopped right? Think about it, for months he has been attacking UA successively and frequently. Why has he stopped for a whole three months?"
"What do you mean? The crime rate is still high and attacks are through the roof."
"When was the last reported sighting of Izuku?"
Mina, confused by his statement, let out a subtle hum, consciously thinking about Bakugo's question. "Umm, I guess in the video with Kaminari."
"Exactly, three months ago. He hasn't been involved in any attacks or even seen in three months."
"That could just mean he is doing business or meetings. If he really is the leader of the league, he has other roles to take care off." Momo placed her teacup on her coaster. "I mean, he could just be busy."
"Again, that's my point. He is doing business. Think about all major crime organisations. Their crime rate has plummeted. The crime rate is high because of petty criminals."
"Because Izuku recruited them. Right?"
"No, he has no use for them. They act on their own accord, so they are uncontrolled"
"So, you think he is recruiting all the big villian organisations?! If that's true, how are we going to stop him?!"
Bakugo frowned, whacking Mina on the head slightly. "Shut up. I'm not done. Here's the thing, we have a advantage."
"An advantage? What are you talking about?" Todoroki pushed forward, getting closer to Bakugo.
"Me and Kirishima saw him a while ago, back when he was first hospitalized. He told me where Izuku was and when he would attack. And recently, he's been training me to beat him."
"Who?"
"Izuku's old teacher. Kurogiri."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hey, Izuku! Where do you want to store the missiles?" Izuku turned around, putting his phone in his pocket. "The group or the weapons?"
"The weapons, sir."
"Drop the sir, and over with the tanks and airplanes."
"Right!"
The man ran to a masked group, one carrying a warhead, and instructed them to leave the weapons were Izuku had instructed. The missiles were gained on a large overseas mission to Russia, which were loosely protected. Izuku sighed, turning back to his phone. Giran had take Izuku's new recruits and had been updating him on their progress. Supposedly, they would be ready to work in the field on a few days or weeks. It was mundane, checking up on everything on an hourly basis.
"Hey, Izuku."
Izuku turned to see Dabi, Toga and Compress walking over to him. He smiled as the approached, all exchanging greetings. "Hey, how are you guys?"
"Good, good. Where have you been? I feel like we never see you anymore." Spinner threw a knife to Toga, who proceeded to play with it. Izuku pointed to a laboratory behind him. "Been sorting out Chisaki and everything he needs. Turns out, he's quite high maintenance."
"Tell me about it." Dabi leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "He won't stop complaining about my burns. Apparently because they are 'contaminated', whatever that means."
"Never mind that!" Toga jumped forward, grabbing Izuku's hand. "When are you going to see Eri? She won't stop asking about you!"
"Still can't believe I left you as her primary guardian..."
"Well, it doesn't count as Magne is always in the room with her. Apparently to 'make sure I don't hurt her.'."
"Well, I have some free time. Where is she?"
Toga grinned, pulling Izuku forcefully. "She's at the bar! She and Magne are talking about girl things like dresses and flowers."
"And you didn't wanna join?"
"My femininity ends at the end of a knife."
"What does that even mean...? Hey, Dabi, Spinner, you joining?"
They both shrugged and followed. "I could go for a drink..."
Toga grinned, running with Izuku still in the clutches of her hand. "Hey Toga."
"Yeeeep?"
"Why did you leave Eri in a bar....?"
"Umm....Orange juice...?"
"Sure, because we don't have cartons in the warehouse..."
As they approached the bar, cheers and singing grew louder and louder. Though concerning, as Eri isn't fond of loud noises, they still continued at their relatively slow pace.
Izuku opened the wooden door, only to narrowly avoid a flying glass of alcohol, which ended up going on Dabi's jacket. The merry cheers grew still for a second. Izuku and Toga was on the verge of laughing, where Dabi was less amused.
"HOW THE FUCK THREW THAT?!"
"Woah, down boy, there is a kid here."
Eri was in the corner, smiling slightly while sipping on a glass of orange liquid. "She's awfully chipper."
"Well, Izuku did ban Chisaku from seeing her."
Izuku approached Eri, a half smile on his face. "Hey Eri!" He said, half waving at the girl. Eri whirled around, her smile growing slightly. She handed Magne her juice, before running to Izuku to hug him. Izuku was the only person who could do this, as her quirk was still highly unpredictable. This was demonstrated as they left, when Toga held her hand and began screaming. Izuku could cancel the affect of the quirk by disabling his abilities to feel quirk effects. It was good for general use, but in terms of combat it was redundant as he couldn't use any of his other quirks as a result. He also couldn't use it for longer that an hour.
Eri still didn't talk much, but she was happier, so that was fine. All the other adults in the bar continued to drink, though at a more moderate level. As Izuku was highly respected, none wanted to embarrass themselves. "Heya Izuku!" Magne waved, calling him over to sit with her. Dabi and Spinner had gone to the bar and Toga stuck by his side. Izuku stood, holding Eri's hand and sat next to Magne, with Toga sitting next to him. Eri sat between Magne and Izuku, taking her drink back from Magne. "How are you? I know you are quite busy with...him nowadays."
Izuku had instructed everyone to not mention Chisaki in front of Eri, just in case. "I'm fine. Just a little tired."
"When are you ever not!?" Toga leaned against Izuku, her back leaning on Izukus shoulder. "Jee thanks..."
"Hey, Izuku. I've been meaning to thank you."
"Thank me?"
Magne nodded, smiling. "I know I joined when Shigaraki was leader. But in the past few months, I've really enjoyed myself here. More than I ever have. I'm not sure but, I think this is where I have been most welcome and accepted. So, thanks."
"Me too!" Toga looked up at Izuku. "Everyone in school was a bitch. Always avoiding me and talking about me. Guess I showed them! But, here, I guess everyone is a cold blooded murderer so my quirk isn't an issue to people."
Izuku chuckled, patting both of them on the back. "Trust me, I get it. Thanks."
"Hey, Izuku."
"Hmm..?"
"I don't really know much about you before you became a villian. Can you tell me?"
"Maybe another day. It's not really best while she's here." Eri looked up, a small orange juice moustache on her face. Magne chuckled, taking a cloth and wiping her face.
Dabi and Spinner were long since wasted, both heads on the bar table mumbling incoherent nonsense. Toga had jumped up, patting the two enthusiastically on the back, giggling happily. "Umm.."
"Hmm?"
Izuku looked down at Eri, who had a conflicted look on her face. "What's wrong?"
"Can..I talk to you?"
"Uh, sure. Come on."
Izuku took the girls hand, thanked Magne and left the bar, which had grown considerable in volume. "Is there anywhere you want to go?"
"Umm...I don't mind.." She was quiet, though a small smile peaking at the sides of her face. "Okay, let's go to my office. It's quiet in there at the least."
Izuku lead the girl to the office. For once she wasn't shivering or shaking. She had been given appropriate clothing for the winter months, and had shoes for a change. Though, she found it slightly difficult to walk in them, being barefoot for so long. The office wasn't exactly heated, but it wasn't freezing cold. Eri wrapped herself in a blanket that Toga left there in case Izuku ever fell asleep at his desk again. "What do you want to talk about?"
"Have you...hurt someone?"
Izuku was slightly taken aback by the question. He sat himself next to the girl, who leaned against him. "Yes. I've hurt a lot of people."
"Why...?"
Izuku looked at Eri, giving her a small smile and gently patted her head. "To protect the people I care about."
"Okay...but what's a war?"
"A war...It's a big fight between many people. It's...like a giant conflict."
"Why do you...want to start one?"
"Where did you learn that?"
"The men were talking..."
"Good grief...Well, I'm doing it to protect everyone here. We can't be safe here unless we fight against the people who hurt us. So, I'm going to fight them, to save everyone."
"So, like a hero?"
Izuku chuckled, leaning back into the cushions."Kinda. Though, I don't really like heroes much."
"I want to help."
Izuku turned to Eri, surprised. Eri was on her knees looking at Izuku intently. "What?! No. I'm sorry but you are too young. And, we don't want you to get hurt again."
It was a ridiculous request. Eri was more of a child than Izuku was. She was a six year old child who wasn't even able to read. It was inhumane to allow a child to enter a war like this, regardless of her quirk.
"But...you all helped me...I want to help you!"
"Eri, you can help us by staying here. I know it doesn't seem fair, but we can risk you getting hurt."
Eri bowed her head, tears pricking at the sides of her eyes. "I...want to help you...". Izuku sighed, pulling the girl into a hug. "I know. Maybe another time, okay?"
Eri didn't reply, merely burying her head into Izuku's shoulders. Keeping Eri in a place like this was a risk in and off itself. But, a war was more, far more risky. Again, she was only a child.
Though, an idea sprung into his head quickly. Izuku pulled away from the hug, turning to Eri. Eri wiped her eyes before looking back at Izuku.
"Though, there is something you could do."
"What...?"
"Tell you what, ask Toga to take you to here tomorrow. I'm going to help you control your quirk."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Uraraka looked around, staring at her blackened surroundings. She still couldn't see anything, so the black screen was her only source of entertainment in a dreary place like this. There were always screams in the distance, most likely from mentally damaged prisoners.
They kept the worst here. Child murderers, Terrorists, global hazards and such. It would be generous to call half of these people human anymore.
She never saw them, but she heard them. The deep bellowing voice drowning out high pitched wailing. The screaming threats overbearing the cries for help. It was quite the divide. Half were psychotic murderers hellbent on destroying anything and anyone who cam near them. The other half were desperate, broken individuals who wanted nothing more but to escape this hell on earth.
It wasn't like they were mistreated. They were given food and water (through tubes as none where trusted to have chains undone) and had a strict curfew of nine hours. The main issue was the boredom. A teenager stuck in a facility, unable to talk to anyone, unable to see, created a sense of helplessness. It really showed how far people would go to stay safe.
She still didn't know why she was framed in the first place.
Though, she had a feeling. It was horrible. It was terrifying. But it wouldn't go away.
It was the fact that she may die in these walls.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Kurogiri...? You mean that mist guy in the USJ?"
Bakugo stood from the sofa, walking over to a nearby window, looking over the courtyard. "He told me that Izuku was going to start a war. A war he has been planning with All for One."
Momo almost dropped her cup as she stood quickly, eyes wide. "War?!"
"He wants to destroy the hero society, he wants to kill all of us."
"How can we trust this guy? He was Izuku's mentor." Todoroki beckoned Momo to sit back down, which she willing obliged to doing.
"Simple. We can't."
"What?!" Mina's expression morphed from one of shock to one of distress. "Then, how do we know he isn't trying to trick us?!"
"Well, he isn't on Izuku's side either."
"So he's neutral?"
"Yeah, he's helping us but he won't fight for us. Basically, he's mad at Izuku for killing Shigaraki. But he also hates heroes because he fucking does. So, he isn't really on any of our sides."
Todoroki took the teacup, taking a sip of the lukewarm substance. Grimacing slightly, he turned to Bakugo. "You didn't really answer our question. What have you been doing these past three months?"
Bakugo turned, pausing slightly. None of them said a word. Instead, Bakugo sighed, sitting back down with the group. "It's a long story."
"We have all night."
"Fine..." Bakugo leaned back, looking at the ceiling, that was slightly scorned. "It started when I was taken by the League of villians. When we were attacked by Izuku, All Might didn't die immediately. He told me to take his power and defeat Izuku."
"Wait...His power...?"
"Yeah, it's called One for All." Bakugo lifted his scarred arm, demonstrating it to the group by activating his quirk, causing red lightning to surround his arm with a few glowing strips circling his arm. "It has stockpiled power over generations, basically creating the ultimate power quirk. However, whenever I used it, my body would break as I wasn't used to it."
"Is that why you were so badly hurt at the school?"
"Yeah. Even now, I can't control all of it. Right now, I can handle around 60% of its power. That's the issue."
"Issue?" Todoroki leaned forward, placing his arms on his knees.
"All Might couldn't beat All for One or Izuku with all of One for All. Izuku has had months to master his quirk, and I can't handle all of mine. My actual quirk can account for some of the missing power, but it's not enough."
"I'm sorry, did you just say your power wasn't good enough?"
"Shut it, Raccoon eyes. I'm just saying Izuku is strong. Seriously strong."
"Well, I may be able to help with that." Todoroki threw his phone over to Bakugo, who picked it up. "I'm going to train with my dad to master my flames. If I can do that, my ice and fire should be able to help."
"You mean, you're going to train with that piece of shit."
"Yes." Todoroki bowed his head. He was still not looking forward to that. Not in the slightest.
"You do realise you will be fighting in a war. Against the strongest person, who is also leading a giant army of villians."
"Yes, but who else is going to fight? Our class is in shambles, heroes are dying or injured and no one trust heroes anymore. If we are going to fight him them we have to do it ourselves."
"Yeah, good luck with that. His organisation is massive. Nearly in the thousands according to Kurogiri. You really think a few students will be able to kill that." Bakugo scoffed, looking away from the group. "I'll be honest. We are fucked."
Mina and Momo had been silent, unable to take in everything. "I'll help." Momo said, shakily. "I can create a plan and supplies. "
"Right...Then, I will create escape routes for citizens. If they attack, they will need away out." Mina said, also slightly shaky.
"Seriously..? You want to fight in a war."
"Its not like we have a choice." Mina smiled slightly. "We are heroes."
Suddenly, the door burst open, a cloud of dust covering the room. Despite the fact that Momo had locked the door, the sturdy peice of wood had been caved in.
In the doorway, stood class 1-A, all sharing the same expression of fead and determination. "Have you been eavesdropping on us?!" Mina jumped up, running to the doorway to push everyone out.
"I can sneak into villian bases to find out what they are planning!" A pair of clothes stepped out of the crowd, belonging to the Invisible girl.
"Me and Mineta can create traps to throw on large groups of villians!" Sero and Mineta also pushed forward, Mineta slightly more hesitant.
"I can create search and rescue operations around the coastlines." Tsuyu let out her froggish smile, Iida stood behind her. "And I can run around the city looking for suspicious behaviour!"
"Wait, what the fuck are you talking about?!" Bakugo stood, facing the giant crowd of students.
"We want to help! We want to be heroes! If what you said is true, we have to protect the people, right?" Iida maneuvered around Tsuyu, facing Bakugo directly. "We can't let anyone else die."
"Hold the fuck on! You do this to a fucking common area and you want to call yourself heroes!?" Bakugo indicated toward the rest of the room, which was still dim and damaged. "Who the fuck do you think you are?!"
"We can't worry about our arguments anymore. Izuku is going to hurt innocent people. We have to do something!" Jirou yelled, looking up at Bakugo. "I know, the whole thing with Kaminari and Uraraka is still important. But if we dont do anything, more people will die!"
"You started most of the conflict!" Bakugo yelled toward the girl. "AND I'M SORRY!"
Jirou bowed her head, hands clasped together. "I am so sorry."
One by one, the rest of the class bowed their head, mumbling their own apologies. Even the Bakugo's group bowed their heads in reconciliation.
Bakugo sighed, lifting his head, before smiling slightly.
"Alright then. Let's go do our fucking job."
