Chapter 16
Chaeyoung PoV
Jimin, Jungkook and I sat on the chairs inside my dad's office. He was seated on the head chair, Jungkook's father to the right, Jungkook next to his dad, Jimin to the left of my dad and I sat next to Jimin, across Jungkook. Everybody's eyes were on me, I thought but they were on Jimin. I can feel Jungkook's eyes staring at me, making me nervous and helpless.
He must feel really angry because of what I did. I ran off for about a week, I ran off to nowhere. Jungkook and Jimin must really want to interrogate me. Where did I go, why did I go, how did I end up in front of the restaurant they were planning to have dinner in.
I ran off to the same beach, the one that is 3 hours from Seoul and Jennie-eonnie found me. She probably knew because Jimin contacted her, and she just knew where I'd be. Jennie didn't tell anyone where I was, instead, both of us just talked to each other and spent the week like normal girls would do. Jisoo-eonnie also came along, she also promised to not tell any authorities.
The 3 of us were just having a 'sleep-over' and the girls comforted me. I'm grateful for them but then I had to return eventually.
"Samchon," Jimin spoke out. "I have a proposal to make for both our families."
Jungkook's father scoffed and rolled his eyes, "Get on with it, your uncle and I are busy men."
Jimin looked like he wanted to punch Jungkook's father but he obviously restrained himself. His hands were forming a fist on his knees but he released them and looked at my father.
"Cancel this engagement between Chaeyoung and Jungkook," he said bluntly.
My eyes darted at him. Jungkook's head lifted and looked at Jimin. My father grunted and Jungkook's father looked insulted.
"Mworago?!" Jungkook's father shouted.
"Appa--"
"You, stay out of this!" Jungkook's father told him and he looked at Jimin. "Is this how you are playing, Jimin-ssi? You are only second in line to get the President's placard on your door wall. You are only a nephew!"
Jimin crossed his legs, "No, I have no intention of owning this company. It's Jungkook's position to fill and not mine. What is of my concern is Chaeyoung's safety."
My dad cleared his throat, "What kind of concern is that? This engagement is to settle the ownership of this company, it is not something a director like you should meddle with even if you are a family member."
"Samchon, ever since these two have been introduced, Chaeyoung has been in terrible circumstances and situations. I am only wanting what's best for my cousin. Marrying Jungkook to her is just like torturing her. I supported willingly but I've had enough," Jimin said confidently.
No one responded.
I turned my head slowly to Jungkook. He was in pure shock. Was he relieved that he didn't have anything to do with me anymore or was he shocked that his engagement is about to be broken? There's nothing to be sad about, there was no rings or feelings in this engagement anyway.
Jungkook returned from his daze and caught everyone's attention, "Well, uh, since this is some sort of meeting, there are formalities. What are you alternatives, then, Jimin-ssi?"
He didn't sound angry or sad. Please, Jungkook, cooperate with me and get this engagement over with.
"Marry her to Kim Tae Hyung. He's a close friend of mine, his family is a stockholder in our company, our company is also a stockholder to theirs. Chaeyoung can own at least 5% of stocks while Jungkook can continue to be the president of the company."
"What?" I blurted out.
I thought I said it inside my head.
My father's eyes changed it's direction to me and he stared at me. Jungkook's father was arguing and complaining about Jimin's proposal. I virtually rolled my eyes, it's just a proposal and it's not final yet, geez, he's overreacting.
"What are your thoughts, Roseanne?" my father called me.
Since when did he ever call me my English name? Jimin elbowed me and gave me the signal to reply.
"I--"
My father sighed, "Did you know that it was mostly Jungkook who gave effort to look for you?"
I shook my head slowly, "No, sir."
"Did you know that Jimin was planning this proposal?"
"No, sir."
"Where were you the whole time you ran away?"
"Jennie-eonnie took care of me and I asked her to not tell anyone where I was."
He heaved a deep sigh, "Alright."
"Mason! You can't be serious?!" Jungkook's father stood up. "Jimin has been threatening to reveal the corruptions of this company, and he threatened to reveal that you've left Chaeyoung alone! Are you just going to let this go so simply?!"
"Appa, sit down, please," Jungkook motioned his father to sit down. "Your blood pressure, appa. It'll be a heavier workload on me if you are to be hospitalized."
Jungkook's father sat down, listening to Jungkook.
He still sounded so calm, like this didn't upset him. My father is agreeing to breaking this engagement and Jungkook seemed to want it more than she did but why does he sound like it's alright.
Maybe because he's still going to inherit the company anyway and I'd own a few percent of stocks. He's in a win-win situation even if the engagement breaks off. Why isn't he showing any emotions?
"Samchon, appa," Jungkook said. "I...I'll be with whatever decision you make."
"Jungkook-ah!" Jungkook's father shouted and he breathed deeply to calm himself down. "I'm saying, we should solve this slowly and carefully. Now, let us talk about possible outcomes if this engagement is broken."
Jimin looked at me and smiled. He was like saying: I'll be the one to save you from this mess. But I didn't feel like I was saved or I didn't feel like I needed saving at all.
This news shocked me but it didn't make me feel sad or happy. My mind is completely blank and it didn't feel relieved. I only wanted to hear Jungkook's reaction to this proposal.
Something in me wanted him to say that he is opposing to the engagement. Something in me just wanted him to say something about how he he felt with this. He's always following his parents choices, he never always chooses his own.
He makes me feel annoyed and upset.
"I'd honestly prefer this engagement rather than an engagement with a gun-store owner," I said.
Everyone turned their attention to me again. Then Jungkook's father pointed at me, "There! She doesn't even want to be engaged with Kim Taehyung."
"...but I'd prefer to not be engaged at all," I continued.
"Chaeyoung, leave this office. We will discuss and decide on this matter," my father ordered me.
I nodded and stood up then bowed before exiting the door. The last thing I saw was Jungkook heaving a deep sigh. Disappointment or relief? Which one is he feeling? How is he so calm? Show a little emotion, just a little bit.
When I turned to the hallway, I heard running footsteps but I figured it was just an employee running around because he or she had work. The halls were big and furbished with wood, I think I'd loose my way around here because I am not familiar with this place.
As I turned to another hallway, hoping that this is where the elevators are located, a very heavy hand held onto my shoulder and someone jumped in front of me.
"Chaeyoung-ahhhhhh!!!!!!" she shouted, catching everyone's attention.
Her hair was shoulder-length short, she had bangs, her businesswoman suit went with the color of navy blue and white. I think I've met her before, just can't pinpoint where but I think I did meet her.
"Lisa, if you forgot. I played a prank on you in Jungkook's office? Do you remember that?" she said, like she was reading my mind.
I nodded, "Ah, yes, Lisa-ssi--"
"Just call me Lisa, or whatever you want."
"Lisa-ssi," I continued my sentence. "How have you been?"
She laughed and placed her arm around me then walked me to the elevator, "Very well! I'm moving to South Korea for work, your girl's director of the marketing department. Anyway, the real question is, how have you been?" She pressed the down button. "Heard from Jungkook you ran away from home?"
"Just nothing...girl problems."
She laughed again, "Aha, I see! You know, Chaeyoung-ah, any friend of Jungkook is a friend of mine. Especially if the person's someone he'd be engaged to, that person is definitely a friend. I have 5 fat and cute cats at home if you need any mental support."
Cats?
The elevator door opened and Lisa pushed me inside, "Parking level's at Basement floor 2. Let's hang out sometime?"
I nodded as she smiled at me. She waved a 'good-bye' and turned around then the elevator doors closed. But other than that, Lisa looks very concerned about Jungkook. I heard they were...college friends, was it? Maybe that's why they're close.
And my memories betray me as it remembers the time I was in Jennie's place.
Oh, to be normal again. To live a life without problems would be nice. I wish I'd wake up and there'd be no more problems. Just a simple person who wakes up and go to work. I'd rather be that than this Youtube-popular girl or this daughter of a rich man.
Jisoo-eonnie isn't the person you'd usually ask about relationships. You'd laugh at men instead of falling for them, she creates the best jokes about men. I agree and all, men are trash, yes. While Jennie-eonnie gives the greatest advice in the world.
My whole time with them, we were baking, watching movies, reading books, joking around and doing all sorts of things we used to do before working. And Jennie decided to sit me down to convince me to go back.
"Life is beautiful only if you choose it to be," she says. "Smile at the people who bring you down. Kindness is what these people need. Do not taint your own life with misery just because you were brought down once or twice or thrice."
If only I was as confident as her then maybe I'd be able to resist the backstabbing noise.
