Twenty Nine
A whole week had passed. Seven days since Haneul had left, seven days of Yeonjun trying non-stop to reach her without success. Seven days of sleepless nights and broken hearts full of doubts and what ifs.
Yeonjun had lost count of how many unanswered calls and unread messages he had sent to Haneul. The first couple of days he was angry, desperate, confused... Now he was just resigned.
He got ready for school that monday, leaving earlier since he couldn't sleep at all the night before. It was a chilly morning that forced him to use his thickest coat although it was a short walk. He quickened his pace, his heart racing in anxiety as all he could think about was finding Haneul and clear things up. He was so desperate that he was willing to do anything she asked him to. She wanted him to make amends with Beomgyu? He would. She wanted him to tell Wendy to fuck off? He totally would. He would even make amends with Rowoon and try his best to leave everything behind and move forward... Anything that could make things at least a little bit the way they were before. He was still confused, so many things had happened in such a short period of time that he didn't even have time to process it all properly.
I've been stupid. So stupid. I can't lose her as well. He thought as he made his way to the campus. Yeonjun felt the loneliest he had ever been before. He didn't have anyone, that's what he felt. No Rocky, no Rowoon, no Beomgyu, no Haneul. Why was life taking everyone he loved away from him? He must have been doing things wrong and that's what he wanted to fix. After so many days on his own, he couldn't stop blaming himself for the way his life had turned upside down.
He bowed to the doorman and quickly entered the school building. Although it was pretty early, the corridors were already filled with students chatting and walking. He went to his locker and placed his bag inside until it was time for him to go to his first class so he wouldn't have to carry the weight of his books everywhere. He had decided to search for Haneul in all the places she spent time in between classes. Opening and closing doors with no results, he started feeling frustrated, even concerned. Was she okay? Had it been a good idea to leave her alone all this time?
He turned around ready to head to another place when a familiar voice called his name.
"Yeonjun!"
He rolled his eyes and kept walking, determined to ignore her completely. However, she kept following him.
"Yeonjun, can we please talk?" She insisted, dragging her feet behind him. "Stop ignoring me! I just want to apologize, don't be mean!"
Yeonjun sighed and stopped in his tracks, turning around to look at her and almost making her bump into him. She smiled, her cheeks rosy, but before she could even say a word, Yeonjun spoke.
"Listen, whatever you have to say, I don't care." He stated. "I don't want to see you again, so please stay the fuck away from me, Wendy."
Yeonjun turned on his heels again and started walking away, leaving Wendy with her blood boiling and a shocked expression. She started feeling so angry, that idiot. She wasn't having it.
"I see that you're not willing to make amends, huh?" She finally spoke, following behind him once again. The more Yeonjun ignored her words, the angrier she got. "What are you looking for? Oh! You're looking for her, right? She looked pretty mad last time. Too bad that you're not going to find her."
"Get lost, Wendy. Second time." He repeated without stopping. His hands turning into fists and his expression stone cold.
Wendy smirked, although he couldn't see her. She let out a fake gasp, followed by an amused chuckle.
"Must be awful that your pretty little girl left without telling you."
Yeonjun finally stopped in his tracks once again, processing all the words Wendy had just said. His brows furrowed together before he turned around to glare at her.
"What the hell are you talking about?"
She giggled.
"Tsk. You still don't know it, do you?" She asked innocently. "She left the town, everyone knows it, including your friends... But oh, they're not that good if you're still oblivious."
Yeonjun felt his stomach sinking at the thought. The way she seemed proud of the daggers she had stuck in his chest made her way more despicable in his eyes. Wendy was finally showing her true colors, he knew he couldn't take her word. He refused to believe her and he wasn't going to let her know how scared he was that what she said was true.
"Do you think I'm going to trust what someone like you says?" He asked with a blank expression. Wendy rolled her eyes in response, followed by a shrug.
"You don't have to, what do I care? Just go and ask them yourself." She said, folding her arms over her chest. "I thought you were cool, you know? But you're really stupid..." She sighed. "You're not that handsome anyways."
Yeonjun stepped forward with anger in his eyes. She stepped backwards.
"If you're lying, I swear I'm going to forget how to be a gentleman with you." He spat threateningly. "You better not cross my path." He added, finally turning around and walking away.
As the memories of the moment when Haneul told him about going back to Daegu start running through his head painfully, he tucked his hand in his pocket to grab his phone, dialing Soobin's number.
"Soobin? Where are you? We need to talk... All of us."
Yeonjun was sitting on top of the teacher's desk located in some empty classroom. His gaze glued to his lap as he kept fidgeting his fingers anxiously, internally praying that his worst fears weren't true.
Right after, the door cracked open and snapped him back to reality. Soobin's concerned expression was the first thing that he saw, followed by his other three friends who looked confused.
"Hyung? What did you want to talk about? Is everything okay?" Soobin asked, stepping forward to the blue haired boy in front of him as Taehyun closed the door behind him.
Yeonjun took a deep breath, unsure of how to ask since everything had been tense between the group. He looked at Beomgyu, and that was such a stinging, bitter feeling that made his blood start to boil once again.
The way he stared at the younger didn't go unnoticed by Taehyun, who frowned and decided to interfere before Yeonjun could do something he would regret later.
"Hyung, we're here to talk because you asked us to. Please don't fight."
Yeonjun's expression subtly softened, but not at all. He sighed.
"I'm going to ask you this, and I hope all of you are honest with me." He said, looking up and glancing at his friends one by one. They looked concerned, awkward, confused. Especially Beomgyu. However, they nodded in agreement.
"What is it? You're scaring us, hyung." Kai said, folding his arms over his chest as he waited for his friend to finally speak.
"Is it true that Haneul left the city?"
The four boys seemed to be taken aback by his question. They knew it would happen eventually, but they weren't prepared for what was about to come.
"Yes, hyung." Soobin said, looking down to his feet.
"And you didn't tell me..."
"We didn't..." Kai mumbled.
The place went quiet for a strong couple of seconds. The silence was as sharp as a knife.
Yeonjun felt a hole in his chest. If he had feel betrayed before, he surely wasn't expecting to feel what he was feeling in that moment.
He hit the woodened desk with his fist. The sound was so loud and unexpected that made all of them flinch.
"You knew about this and none of you told me!" He shouted, jumping off the desk.
The hurt reflected in his face made all of them feel like pieces of crap. They had hurt his friend once again, and they didn't know how to ask for forgiveness.
"Hyung... She asked us not to."
He let out a humorless laugh, before his expression became filled with anger once again. He looked like he was about to burst into tears out of anger.
"Now you're picking sides?" He asked. "Wasn't I your friend before you even knew she existed?!"
"We're not picking sides... We just wanted to respect her decision. We never meant to hurt you, hyung." Soobin tried to explain, guilt eating him alive.
"At my expense!" He yelled. His breathing became erratic, his chest going up and down repeatedly as he felt his heart ache more than ever.
"Hyung, she's suffered too much... This is the least we could do for her." Beomgyu finally spoke, pouring gasoline on the already wild fire.
"Has anyone ever stopped and thought about my feelings for a fucking second?!" He asked, his voice still loud, but cracking. "Am I painted on the wall? Am I a goddamn stone?" He continued, running his fingers through his hair in frustration. "Don't even answer... It's all bullshit. But thank you very much, guys. The girl I care about the most left me without looking back and my friends supported her decision of not even letting me say goodbye." He spat, storming out of the classroom although his friends kept calling his name. The group was left dumbfounded, feeling as terrible as a human with morals could.
Yeonjun didn't even care about classes anymore. He harshly opened his locker and grabbed his bag before he slammed it shut again and left the building.
He ran as fast as he could, having a tiny hope that everything was a lie and Haneul just didn't want to see him, but she was still at home. The adrenaline in his veins was high enough for him not to stop and run out of oxygen until he finally got there.
He threw his bag on the floor and tried to catch his breath now that his body was coming back to his senses. But it wasn't until he saw that big sign stuck in the grass that he felt like his soul had left his body.
FOR SALE.
His eyes widened and his body froze until he fell on his knees. He couldn't make a move or even process it when tears were already streaming down his face.
Then he broke down and cried, pulling on the grass and punching the floor angrily as he sobbed. He was devastated, what did he do that was so bad for her to leave him that way? Was he such a piece of shit?
He pulled his phone out from his pocket, wiping away his tears harshly with the back of his hands. He looked for her contact and started typing roughly.
Read. That's all he got from her. But unbeknownst to him, on the other side of the line there was Haneul, who cried as her heart shattered in the same amount of pieces that his own had been shattered as well.
"It seems like no one gives a shit about me these days, huh? You seemed to be the only one who never turned your back on me." Yeonjun expressed, sitting on the grass with his legs crossed as he stared at his best friend's grave. His eyes stung and were probably really swollen by the time, but who cared? He didn't, for sure.
"Maybe this is the way life is telling me that I've been doing things the wrong way." He continued, sniffling as he pulled on the leaves of grass that were under him. "I shouldn't have feelings for the girl my best friend loved, right?" He asked retorically, letting out an ironic chuckle. "Fuck's sake, Rocky. How's that everything just gets worse and worse? Why did I have to feel this way? It's like I suddenly started seeing her... Through your eyes."
He let out a big breath and ran his hands over his face and hair, giving himself a couple of seconds to organize his own thoughts.
"I swear I never saw her the way I do now." He assured. "It's like..." He sighed. "I don't even know. At first it was confusing, but then it felt like it was meant to happen. Like I was the one who should love her and then I suddenly started doing it, the way you did."
He groaned, standing up and shaking the dirt from his pants off. He wiped the remaining tears from his eyes and sighed. He was so conflicted and in moments like that is when he missed Rocky the most.
"Now you're able to know what's meant to be and what's not." He said. "If this is meant to be, if this is how it should be... If it's right to feel this way, then give me the wisdom to find the make it happen, cross our paths again... But if it's not, If this is wrong... Then keep her away from me no matter what, forever." He added, picking up his back and throwing it on his shoulder, ready to leave and find a way to survive to his cruel reality.
