Twenty Eight
Things packed and not many hours of sleep as the group was already on their way back home. The atmosphere was tense and everyone was too quiet for their own liking. Yeonjun hadn't even made eye contact with Haneul or Beomgyu, so she had just decided to sit next to the blonde this time. Her heart ached, memories from the night before still haunting her the moment she laced her arm with Beomgyu's, resting her head on his shoulder and him resting his on top of hers.
No one dared to say a word since they were informed of the whole incident. Taehyun was with his headphones on, Soobin was asleep and Kai was watching a movie on his phone. On the other hand, Yeonjun was feeling numb, he had cried so much that he thought he wouldn't be able to shed a single tear anymore. It was a mixture of hurt, love and resentment spinning in his head and heart, in which he was being tormented by the feeling of betrayal coming from two of his best friends.
Haneul kept thinking, wondering if maybe she had been too impulsive with her actions. She knew Yeonjun too well and even a fool would know he was devastated, but whenever she pictured him kissing Wendy in front of her after all that had happened prior to that night, she stopped regretting. It was awful to know that whatever the two had, had been destroyed by a third person that didn't even care about them or what they had been through together, but that's how life is, she thought. She was familiar with the fact that it can give to you, and then just take it away from you easily.
"Are you okay?" Beomgyu asked in a whisper. Haneul looked up at him and forced a light smile, nodding, but he knew better. He knew she was hurting, he knew Yeonjun was hurting, and he couldn't stop blaming himself for that. Sure, he never wanted to hurt his friend and it never crossed his mind that Haneul would act that way, but he just couldn't turn his back on her either. He was stuck between them both and he just hoped that somehow, he would be able to get Yeonjun to forgive him.
Haneul felt like crying, tightening the hold on Beomgyu's arm as everything they did the last week comes back in flashes. All the songs, the laughter, she didn't think she could feel that happy after Rocky's passing, but they made it possible. It hurt to know she had to say goodbye the moment she arrived home, but it hurt even more the fact that Yeonjun was totally oblivious of her plans.
She needed to leave, for her, and for him. She had suffered enough and she was becoming too attached to the blue haired boy, so attached that she already wasn't able to bear with the feeling of something taking him away from her, and they were just friends. How was she going to deal with the loneliness from now on? She didn't want to think about it. She was about to drop everything and leave without looking back, even though she knew it could be the worst decision for her.
Yeonjun turned his head just a little, but enough to take a glance of Haneul against Beomgyu's shoulder. He took a deep breath through his nostrils and exhaled, feeling like a knife was constantly stabbed in his heart. He thought that maybe they were now together, and who was him to say a thing against that? He had to swallow every single bit of pain and words he wanted to say. He was so confused and wanted to ask them if they ever cared about him, especially Haneul, but he didn't want to seem that weak. His hands that were placed on top of his thighs turned into fists, strength accumulating in each palm as he mentally cursed at himself for still wanting to hug her, for wanting to plead for her to say what he had done wrong to be replaced so quickly. Did she ever have feelings for him? Maybe it had been all in his head and he had mistaken her feelings, confusing her in the process. She never asked for him to kiss her, she never said she wanted to be more than friends either. He was the one to blame in that case, taking advantage of someone that was vulnerable. Those were the kind of thoughts that kept going through his head the whole trip, not a single song or landscape was able to stop them, and he just wanted to push a button and stop his mind from running for a while.
The moment when Haneul arrived home had finally come. Kai opened the van's door for her to jump out, but before anyone else could do it, Yeonjun followed her and helped with her luggage. Haneul kept silent, walking towards her front door with a heavy heart, not daring to look back at him. However, she turned around so he could hand the luggage to her, and that's when they inevitably locked eyes.
"Thanks." She said, voice low and weak, almost like a whisper. Their hands accidentally brushed as soon as he handed it to her, and it sent a wave of electricity down their bodies.
His eyes had lost their usual shine, and it hurt her to know that the only time she had seen him like that was the day he told her that Rocky had died. Unable to keep looking into his eyes filled with hurt, she looked down at her feet. However, Yeonjun couldn't hold back and wrapped his arms around her, hugging her tightly.
She widened her eyes in shock. Her heart shattered against her chest as he pressed his body flush to her small frame. He buried his face on her shoulder, breathing erratically against her skin.
"Thank you for coming." He whispered. "I'm sorry if I ever hurt you."
She was urging to hug him back. Damn it, him acting that way after all that happened was the last thing she expected. Her eyes instantly filled with tears that threatened to fall, but although she didn't wrap her arms around him, she rested her forehead against his shoulder. Biting her lip, she kept trying to stay strong and hold back the tears before he finally pulled back and looked at her once again. He smiled sadly at her, turning around and getting back into the van.
She turned around and hurried to get inside, feeling like she would break down at any moment. Unfortunately for her, as soon as she entered the house, her parents appeared with big grins and hugs for her. For the sake of her own privacy, she had to force a smile and pretend like nothing had happened.
"Welcome back! We missed you!" Her mom greeted, hugging her daughter tightly. Haneul hugged her back, and her mother's familiar scent helped her to feel more at ease.
Her father took her luggage right after he had hugged her and took it to her room. Haneul and her mother walked to the living room, where Minki was peacefully sleeping on the couch. She smiled, holding him and petting him lovingly. She had missed him and she could've sworn he looked way bigger than he did before she left.
"How was it? Did you have fun?" Her mother asked, sitting on the couch and patting the empty spot next to her. Haneul smiled and sat with the cat on her lap, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Yes. It was really fun, it was beautiful up there." She confessed. "We did many things like ice skating and we even rode a balloon."
Her mother's mouth was agape in shock, before she smiled.
"Is that so? That sounds scary!"
Haneul chuckled.
"It was, but I had--" She stopped, thinking about what she was going to say. "We were all together so the fear just faded away."
Her father joined the both of them soon and they chatted about all the things they have done the past week. She told all the stories, all the times Hueningkai made her laugh, or the complaints Taehyun threw whenever Kai made him embarrassed. They shared a good laugh until she finally took a deep breath and told them what she had planned.
"Mom, dad... I have made my decision."
Her parents looked at her expectantly. Her mother placed her hand on top of Haneul's and gave it a light squeeze, smiling warmly at her.
"What is it? Anything you decide, we will support you."
She smiled back.
"I'm going to Daegu with you."
The five boys were now at Hueningkai's place. They had just arrived and were planning on eating dinner together and maybe play some videogames.
But Yeonjun wasn't in the mood.
He had been holding back his anger for too long, and now that Haneul wasn't there, he planned to let it out. He walked and found Beomgyu standing in front of the couch, chatting with Taehyun. He stepped closer, his eyes cold as ice and filled with hatred, before he pushed the younger, almost making him lose his balance.
"Hyung, what are you doing?" Taehyun asked alarmed as Beomgyu stabilized himself and locked eyes with Yeonjun, who kept getting closer.
"Was it fun? Did it feel good?" Yeonjun asked through gritted teeth. Beomgyu kept stepping back, trying to avoid any kind of confrontations.
"Hyung, I don't want to fight with you." Beomgyu said.
Yeonjun let out a humorless laugh, pushing him again.
"Then why would you betray me that way? What a great friend you are, huh? Kissing the girl you know I like?" He continued, still pushing him.
"Hyung, stop!" Taehyun repeated, standing up and not knowing what to do.
"It's not what you think." Beomgyu insisted with a blank expression.
"Is not? I think it is, though. Is this what you do with people you call your brothers?" Yeonjun started to raise his voice, his pushes became harsher and stronger, making Beomgyu start to stumble.
"Hyung!" Taehyun shouted, before he ran looking for the other two to help out.
"I said it's not what you think, hyung!" Beomgyu shouted.
"Then what is it? Tell me! Why the fuck would you do it?!" Yeonjun yelled back, standing in front of Beomgyu.
"I can't..." Beomgyu said, lowering his voice and looking away from the blue haired boy.
Yeonjun scoffed.
"You can't? What? The cat got your tongue now? Did you run out of excuses?!"
Beomgyu was stressed. He was starting to feel angry at the whole situation, the frustration of not being able to speak made it even worse.
"Maybe if you hadn't kiss Wendy, that'd never happen. You were the one who betrayed first."
Yeonjun's face turned dark, full of rage the moment he punched Beomgyu and made him fall backwards.
"Hyung, stop!" Soobin shouted, standing in font of Yeonjun to stop him from repeating his actions as soon as they saw him getting closer to Beomgyu, who was now on the floor with blood on his lip.
"What the fuck is going on?" Kai asked, helping Beomgyu to stand up. Taehyun, being the second strongest, held Yeonjun from behind and forcefully stopped him, scared that he might hit their friend again.
"Let go of me!" Yeonjun yelled. "He needs to feel the same pain I felt! He needs to learn that you don't betray your friends!"
"You can't do this, hyung. What's wrong with you?" Soobin asked, trying to make Yeonjun reason.
"Hyung, you're in my house with my parents! Are you crazy?" Kai asked, his brows knitted together.
"I regret ever calling you my friend, traitor!" Yeonjun yelled once again.
"Hyung, leave. Don't come back until you have cooled down." Kai said, his voice stern.
Yeonjun finally stopped, panting and pulling away from Taehyun's grip.
"I'll leave. But be careful, guys... If you ever fall in love, he might steal your girls." He spat, glaring at Beomgyu who did nothing but keep quiet. He turned on his heels and stormed out of Hueningkai's house.
"Are you okay?" Soobin asked, seeing Beomgyu wipe away the blood coming from his lip with the back of his hand, wincing in pain.
"Yeah." He assured. "I hope this bullshit ends soon."
"Why didn't you tell him?"
Beomgyu sighed.
"I promised I wouldn't until Haneul left."
Haneul was pacing back and forth all over the train station. Her parents were buying some snacks as she waited for her friends to come and say goodbye to her. Staring at the clock on her wrist, she sighed. Maybe they had forgotten or didn't want to say goodbye, she thought.
But soon, she spotted Soobin's tall figure in the distance. An instant smile appeared on her face. The four boys ran towards her, smiling.
"I thought you wouldn't come." She pouted. "It's almost time."
"We would never let you go just like that." Kai said, smiling.
She smiled back until she noticed the bruise on Beomgyu's lip. She frowned, stepping closer to him.
"What happened to you?!" She asked, concerned. "Who did this?"
Beomgyu forced a light smile at her.
"I'm okay. Please don't worry."
She narrowed her eyes at him, realization hitting.
"Yeonjun..." She muttered.
The way he looked down and sighed made her know that she was right. The feeling of guilt suddenly became heavier than ever, and tears formed in her eyes. She quickly wrapped her arms around Beomgyu's waist and hugged him, resting her cheek on his chest.
"I'm so sorry..." She apologized, her voice cracking. "This is all my fault. I'm sorry." She repeated.
Beomgyu hugged her back and patted the back of her head.
"It's okay. Don't feel like that, I'll be fine." He assured. Haneul pulled back a bit enough to look into his eyes. Tears streamed down her face as she shook her head.
"It's all my fault. I'm so sorry for all the pain I've put you through. I've been so selfish, I just ruined a friendship." She cried.
Beomgyu sighed, pulling her against his chest again.
"It's okay. I don't blame you for anything. We'll find a way to fix everything at some point. Please don't cry."
"You're the best of friends. I swear you are." She hugged him tighter. "Please... As soon as I leave, tell him everything. Put all the blame on me, tell him how much of a shitty person I am for not only breaking his heart, but also ruining your friendship. Please Beomgyu, I'd rather have him to hate me than to hate you."
"We'll help. We won't let things stay this way forever anyways." Taehyun said. Haneul pulled back from Beomgyu and wiped her tears with her sleeve.
"I do not deserve any of this. You're turning your back on him for me, and now I know how bad that is. I will never forgive myself for doing this to all of you. I shouldn't have walked into your lives." She admitted. "I just hope that now that I won't be around, you can be the way you were before I appeared."
"Don't say that, noona. We love you as much as we love Yeonjun hyung." Kai said. "Life happens, doesn't mean things can't get better. Time heals."
"It's either you two find a way to be back together, or move on with your lives." Soobin added.
Haneul sighed moments before they got called to get on the train. She smiled at them with glossy eyes. Starting to hug them one by one as tightly as she could.
"Thank you for everything you've done for me. I have never met better people than you. Please take care and take care of Yeonjun. We'll see each other again." She said, ready to let go.
"We're already looking forward to it." Beomgyu said.
Haneul smiled, walking backwards as they waved goodbye.
She got on the train and tears threatened to fall again. She couldn't get rid of that guilt that was eating her alive.
She grabbed her phone and dialed the number. Her heart was beating louder and heavier than ever before, feeling like it had stopped as soon as she heard his voice.
"Haneul?"
She took a deep breath, trying her best to stop her voice from cracking.
"This is the last thing I'm going to ask from you."
"What? Where are you?"
"If you care about me, forgive Beomgyu. He didn't do anything."
"Ahh, so that's why you called. Now he's the only thing you care about, huh?"
"I have no time for this, Yeonjun. If you ever felt something, make amends with him even if that means you'll hate me forever." She repeated, hanging up before he could say anything else.
Her phone started buzzing with his name on the screen. She swallowed her tears and the ones that had escaped from her eyes, were quickly wiped away before her parents could notice.
He had to get tired of trying to reach her at some point.
