Thirteen
Yeonjun ran so fast that he could feel his legs burn, but he didn't care at all. He kept trying to communicate with Haneul, but she never picked up and that made him feel terrified.
As soon as he arrived at her front door, his heart was racing faster than ever before. It pounded so hard he could even feel it on his throat.
He knocked the door loudly, hoping that somehow he was overreacting, that her phone probably ran out of battery, or she had fallen asleep.
"Haneul, it's me, please open the door!" He shouted, waiting a few seconds before he knocked again.
But still, no response. He had a bad feeling in the pitch of his stomach, he looked around trying to find a way to enter the house, that's when he noticed a tree that was close to her window in the second floor. He didn't hesitate and just climbed the tree, not even caring about the splinters that got stuck in his hands.
He leaned his body and extended one of his arms, struggling until he finally opened the window. He was about to enter, when he noticed Haneul laying on her bed.
"Haneul?" He called her, but she didn't even move, which worried him even more. He introduced one leg, then the other and he was finally standing inside the bedroom.
He stepped closer, feeling his stomach sink.
"Haneul?" He called again, slightly shaking her. She didn't open her eyes and Yeonjun instantly panicked "Oh no, Haneul!" He shouted, looking frantically around the room for an answer. He moved everything until he spotted the now empty bottle of pills. Realization never hit him that hard before. "What did you do?!" He yelled, picking her up bridal style and taking her to the bathroom. He was panting, completely scared and running out of breath. Haneul was unconscious and he didn't even knew for how long she had been like that.
He placed her inside the bathtub, making the water run and sat behind her, resting her back against his chest. They got wet, his clothes were soaked, and so was her.
"Haneul, please open your eyes!" He shouted, slapping her cheek softly. Since she wasn't reacting, he pushed her forward, opened her mouth and introduced his fingers in urge to make her vomit whatever she had taken.
"Please, throw up, come on" He whispered, his eyes wattery.
Haneul barely coughed, and threw up a white liquid. However, it wasn't enough to wake her up. He tried once again, but her body stopped reacting. Yeonjun picked her up again and placed her on the floor. Her skin was pale and cold, he tried to take her pulse, but she wasn't breathing.
Yeonjun ran and grabbed her phone.
"Hello? please, I need an ambulance!"
He then, still wet, started to compress her chest, giving her CPR.
"One, two, three, four" He counted "Please, please, come back!"
Haneul's POV:
I opened my eyes, feeling a stinging pain in my head. The room was completely white and I felt so weak that I could barely move. I felt confused, dizzy, but then I realized I was in the hospital.
I struggled, but managed to sit up. I noticed Yeonjun sitting on a chair next to my bed, the top of his body was resting on my mattress, his head resting in his arms.
I remembered why I was there, and if I was, that meant he saved me.
I lifted my hand and stroked his blue, fluffy hair, running my fingers through it.
"You really refuse to leave me alone, don't you?" I whispered.
He slightly moved, and slowly opened his eyes. When he felt my touch he flinched, looking at me with widened eyes.
"You're alive" He said, standing up and cupping my face in his hands.
I was about to say something, but the doctor entered the room. He came and started to check me, not giving me time to process what had happened.
I wasn't sure if I was happy to be alive, or mad because he didn't let me go.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Haneul was left with the nurses, and Yeonjun exited the room with the doctor. The old man looked at him dead in the eye, and cleared his throat. Yeonjun looked at him expectantly, still worried even though he felt relieved to see that she had woken up.
"Okay... She is alive, but the situation is delicate"
Yeonjun knitted his brows together, focusing on what the doctor said.
"What do you mean?"
The man sighed.
"We had to make a gastric irrigation on her, to clean all the drugs she had inside" He explained "First of all, I want to congratulate you... If you hadn't performed CPR on her, she wouldn't have survived until the ambulance arrived. But now that she's alive... You need to know that the fact that she attempted suicide, means that she needs psychological help as soon as possible. She needs treatment to regain her mental health. Is this the first time she has done something like this?"
Yeonjun nodded.
"She had an accident less than a month ago. Her boyfriend died and she hasn't been the same. She also has nightmares every night, barely eats, sometimes doesn't even showers"
"I see. Listen... I'll contact one of my psychiatric colleagues, so you can take her there. It's important that you take her there soon, so this won't happen again"
"I understand"
"You can take her home this evening, be sure to take good care of her, and feed her with liquids for today. Now, please follow me"
Yeonjun made sure to set everything up to take care of Haneul. They were now heading to her house, the taxi was filled with nothing but silence. Yeonjun was in the passenger seat, whilst Haneul kept staring at him from the backseat. He hadn't spoken to her all day, and she assumed he was mad at her for the whole situation.
The truth was, that Yeonjun was emotionally drained. He cared about Haneul too much and could not let anything else happen to her. He was disappointed, hurt, she almost died and somehow he felt guilty. He thought he didn't take enough care of her.
Haneul wasn't sure of how to feel. She knew that what she had done was bad, but now that she survived felt confused. She didn't want to live, that's why she tried to die, but again, Yeonjun interfered.
As soon as they arrived, Yeonjun helped her to get off the car, opened the door for her and they entered the house. Haneul stopped in the middle of the hallway, not being able to hold back anymore. She turned around and looked at him, opening her mouth to speak, but he spoke first.
"I'm calling your parents" He said, walking to the kitchen without a glance.
She felt a knot in her stomach, anger increasing whitin her.
"You won't do that" She said, following him. Yeonjun stopped on his tracks and turned again to look at her. His expression was blank, cold, and too serious. Haneul had never seen such an expression coming from him.
"Guess what? It's not an option"
Haneul's hand turned into fists. She was mad.
"You have no way of contacting them"
Yeonjun scoffed.
"I already did"
Haneul felt her heart drop.
"What?!" She yelled "Who do you think you are? Stop interfering, can't you see that I don't want to be here?!" She added, tears forming in his eyes. "Can you just leave me alone? Get out of my house, of my life! I never asked you to do all of this!"
"How can you be so selfish?" He muttered, taking her aback.
"What are you saying?!"
"You are selfish" He said firmly "How dare you to do this to yourself? What about the people who loves you?"
"Yeonjun, can't you see I don't want to live anymore? I'm tired, I lost the most precious person for me! Of course you don't care, you've never lost the love of your life!" She cried.
"Have you ever stopped for a minute, and thought that I'm in pain as well?" He asked "Yeah I probably didn't lose the love of my life, but I lost my best friend. I lost a brother, the only one who was there for me no matter what. The only one who got my back, the only one who never judged me. Have you ever thought that? I didn't lose a romantic partner, but I lost my other half. Have you ever tried to put yourself on my shoes? How many times I've felt alone since he died? How empty is that dance room where we used to spend our time and laugh together?"
Yeonjun's lip was quivering, he was trying so hard not to cry. His words hit Haneul harder than she thought. He was right, all the time she was stuck in her own pain, that she didn't even consider his own mourning.
"I care about you, I've been trying my best to cheer you up, to take care of you. What have I gotten in return? Coldness? I don't care, harshness? I don't mind. But trying to hurt yourself while I've been trying so hard to keep you alive? What are you doing? What do you want me to do? Do I have to cry for you?" He said, his voice cracking more than he would have wanted.
Tears streamed down Haneul's face.
"I just... wanted to be with him. I need him. I couldn't handle the pain..."
Yeonjun stepped closer.
"Haneul, I understand that you miss him, for fuck's sake, I do too... But the world still turns, we need to move on and keep living although it hurts. He will always be in our hearts and it's okay to feel sad... It's okay to feel hurt... But it's not okay to drown in the pain. Rocky died, but he didn't have a choice, he didn't ask for it. But you, you can live, you can do it for him, but instead, you try to end the only thing he wouldn't have wanted to lose. Is that what you learned from him? From Rocky? The one who never gave up on anything? The one who had so many dreams? How do you think he would feel seeing you in such a state? I couldn't save him. I couldn't do anything, do you think I want to do the same with you? Do you think I want to lose you like that as well? And what about your parents? If you don't give a shit about me, at least think about them."
"...You?"
"Do you really think that I'm here because I feel sorry for you? Of course... You always think that everything revolves around you. Nothing has been enough, nothing I do, and I know I'm useless, but I can't stop trying. The worst part of it is how bad this is hurting me, yet I can't seem to stop myself from wanting to protect you." He sniffed. "Do you want me out of your life so badly? I'll tell you what. Talk to your parents. Get better, do your treatment and as soon as you're fine, I'll walk out of your life".
Yeonjun turned on his heels and stormed out of the house.
Haneul felt terrible. Yeonjun never said how much he was hurting. She felt selfish, she felt like a terrible friend with someone who had been nothing but nice to her. She knew he was right. Rocky wouldn't want her to be like that.
She ran to the door, feeling relieved when she opened it and found Yeonjun sitting on the porch, sobbing like a little kid. Haneul's heart broke at the sight, she had never seen Yeonjun like that. He was always so cheerful, so bright. He was always trying to make her laugh, but in that moment... It was the complete opposite. He was broken.
She seated next to him, crying as well. He was covering his face with his hands. Haneul looked at him and placed her hand on his shoulder. He looked up, his eyes were red and puffy.
"I'm so sorry, Yeonjun" She whispered, her voice cracking. "I'm so sorry" She repeated. "You're right. Please forgive me because I never thought about your pain. I can't even imagine how you felt when you saw me unconscious. I'm so sorry I made you go through this. You saved me, even though I didn't want to be saved, you did your best, and that proves how much you care. I promise I'm going to try. I'll try to get better".
With that, she wrapped him I'm a tight hug that he responded. They cried together on each other's shoulders. That was the first time her pillar had broke down. The first time he showed his vulnerability. The first moment they shared such an emotional and intimate moment.
She tangled her fingers in his hair, hugging him even tighter. He was so good, no one deserved him, she didn't deserve him, as a friend, not even as an acquaintance.
"I don't want you out of my life".
