Chapter 29.
"Hello." I answer the call I'd just received, whilst I'd excused myself to the bathroom.
No answer.
That's strange.
This is not the first time I've received a blank call, I didn't really take it that seriously. Not that I will right now.
Shaking my head, I finish up with my business and then head out, preparing to eat. My steps faulter when I take notice of Sam, who's no longer alone at our table. The back of the person's head has me suspecting who the person might be, but not wanting to assume, I continue on to the table.
Sam's eyes quickly find me as I draw near.
"Roman?" I say in surprise, despite my suspicions.
"Hey." He turns to face me, sitting opposite Sam.
"W-what are you doing here?"
"He was here alone, there weren't any available tables, so..." He trails off, glancing between Roman and I.
"So?" I raise my brow at him.
"So the food's here!" Roman announces, gesturing to the waitress who comes over with our food.
I don't say anything after that, taking a seat next to Sam, where both of us are facing Roman, who's sparked the waitress's attention.
"You seem to attract waitresses." I comment, pulling my full plate close.
"Not only them." He mumbles.
I roll my eyes, paying no mind to him.
" I get the sense that there's a story behind this."
Roman and I glance at each other, him raising his brow at me, makes my lips to curve into a grin.
"Okay, now I'm interested to know." Sam says , noticing the looks on our faces.
I sigh before retelling the story of when Roman hijacked my date. Sam chokes on his drink when I get to the part of me ditching Roman.
"Wow, the ditched turns into the ditcher." Sam says after I'm done.
"Hey, I was not -"
"You were ditched." They both say at the same time.
"No, he forgot. Anyone would." I try defend Danny.
" I wouldn't." Roman says and we both look at him.
"Yeah well you're not him. "
"You're right, he's not. He's Roman Joel O'Connor." Sam speaks up.
"Lose the full name." Both Roman and I groan, face palming ourselves before we realize what we're doing.
"It's a good name." Sam cries out in defence, holding his hands up in surrender.
Roman has never really been a fan of his full name, he said it made him feel weird and old. I personally had no problem with it, but I respected his wishes and stopped calling him by his full name.
"Yeah well, you know how weird Rome feels about it." I say, smacking Sam upside his head, earning an ' ouch' from him.
"And she never fails to abuse me." Sam mumbles and unluckily for him, I heard him.
"Oh, wanna really feel it, okay?" I raise my hand to smack his head but he moves out of the way before I get the chance to.
"Hey!" Sam jumps out of the way, this only resulting to him almost falling out of his seat.
I snicker at him, earning a huff from Sam.
Turning around to sit properly, I pause my movements when I feel eyes on me. Trailing my own up, I find Roman looking at me.
"What?" I ask.
"Nothing." He shakes his head, but by the far away look on his face, it doesn't feel like nothing.
"You called him Rome." Sam points out, making me freeze mid drink.
I did what now?
"Oh." I say quietly. I sneak a glance at Roman, who avoids eye contact, busy eating and pretending as if this didn't just happen..
"Sorry." I mumble.
His head snaps to me. He opens his mouth to say something but Sam interrupts him.
"Well it ain't more weirder than Sammy, Sam Sam -"
"Or Samster." Roman adds, making me laugh.
"You called him Samster?" I ask in disbelief.
"Yeah when we were young." Sam grumbles, not looking at all intimidating, but rather cute.
"It's not my fault that I thought he looked like Mrs Elsuza's hamster." I burst out laughing at that, not even caring if we've earned ourselves eyes.
"He did not look - ," I can't even finish the sentence when an incident of Mrs Elsuza, in 4th grade comes to mind. Because Sam was her favourite with his cuteness, she made him a hamster suit.
Everyone had a part to play and costumes, not that Sam didn't, it's just that, the teacher thought her costume would look so much better on him.
"Aah, I know that look, you're thinking about it aren't you?" Roman points at me, his eyes amused.
The longer we stare at each other, the more vivid the memory is and before long, both Roman and I burst out laughing.
"You guys are the worst, especially you." Sam throws at me.
"What did I do?"
"You're my cousin, you're suppose to be nice."
" I am being nice, I kept the comments to myself."
"Not for long." Roman scoffs and I kick him under the table, earning an ' ouch' and a glare from him.
"Shut up."
"Violent much." Roman says.
"You deserved that." I say, referring to what just happened.
"No, what I deserve are some juicy, delicious wi - ," I almost lean all the way to the other side, pulling his arm down, so the waiter doesn't see him.
"You're so -"
"What?" He arches his brow.
"Nothing, you're annoying." My phone suddenly rings, interrupting me.
I hesitate from answering, thinking back to all the blank calls I'd suddenly started receiving.
"Aren't you going to answer?" Sam asks.
"Uh, yeah..." I trail off, sneaking a glance at both guys, who's full attention I've now earned.
The call ends just when I am about to answer, making me frown a bit. Checking for who it might have been, my heart stops for a second when I see Danny's name.
Oh gosh, how can I miss his call .
My phone buzzes yet again, but this time it's a message and I hold my breath, when I see that it's from Danny.
Tapping into it, I somewhat relax when my eyes read this over.
I need to see you.
That's all that's there. I seriously don't know how to feel about this message, we haven't spoken for over 2 days and I surely miss him. He's been a little distant and I want to know why, what did I do and how can I fix things?
"You have to go don't you?" Roman speaks up, where I glance up to look at him.
"Yeah, I need to do something." I respond, not tearing my eyes away from him.
A few seconds pass with us looking at each other before I break eye contact, glancing at Sam." Thank you for this" I give him a small smile of appreciation for taking me out.
"Let me take you back." My head snaps ahead to face Roman.
"Uh it's okay, I'll be fine."
"It's getting dark, so I'm taking you." He says in an end off tone.
"No arguments here." Sam says, holding his hands up.
He shrugs his shoulders when I look at him. I sigh, rising to my feet along with Roman, taking out my own share of money to pay but Sam stops me from paying, which earns him a disapproving look from me.
Before I can say anything, his phone rings and I'm lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the caller ID, which is none other then Avery.
I bite at my lip, holding myself back from saying anything. I say goodbye to him before heading out, followed by Roman.
"You know, you didn't have to do this, I could have gone on my own."
"Do you really think I'd let you leave alone like this?" I don't say anything, letting him lead me to his car.
The trip is silent but not awkward, and I take the time to get lost in my thoughts. Looking out the window, I watch on to the trees passing by, trying to not let myself drown in depressing thoughts.
My intention from the beginning, was not to return and I had my reasons I believe. My father wanted me to try stay here for a while and see if I would change my mind. I feel that at times, I've lost control of myself and that my mind is in a mess.
I cant help but feel that I'm sometimes lost. I feel that something is missing.
"You're very quiet right now, are you okay?" Roman asks, interrupting my thoughts.
"Yeah I'm okay, just thinking." I say, glancing at him.
"What about?"
"None of your business." I look away from him.
"Well you're in my car, it's us two, so I'd say it's my business."
" I don't mind jumping out."
"Don't. You. Dare." My lips twitch into a small smile.
"A little cranky aren't you?" I turn to face him, resting my chin on my fist.
"Well what can I say, with someone being so reckless."
"Hey!" I gasp dramatically. " I'm not."
"You had me worried each time we went to school. I never knew what crazy thing you would do next. You almost gave me a heart attack when you were about to jump off the roof one time."
" I wasn't going to, though I wanted to, but I thought better of it." I say, leaning back against the seat.
" I wanted to strangle you."
"Many times." We both say at the same time, chuckling at the end.
"But I was never that bad, you just worried too much."
" I always worry." My smile wavers, blinking twice and coughing awkwardly.
"Yeah well, you don't need to anymore, nothing's the same anymore." I mumble at the end.
We fall back into silence and he switches on some music just to drown it out, until we reach the academy. He parks right outside the gate.
My hand rests on the door handle, but I don't open it or attempt to get out. I turn to him.
" I was wrong the first time you came to speak to me." He turns to face me." I was wrong to let Danny carry on like that. With whatever is happening between us, family is off limits."
" You don't need to - "
"It's the right thing to do and I was meant to that, at the diner that day."
We look at each other for a few seconds before I open the door and get out, heading inside the premesis.
My shoulders slump in relief along the way. I feel relieved that I got this off my chest. I stop in my tracks when I spot a hunched over figure by the fountain.
I remember that Danny wanted to talk to me.
" Danny?!" I call him.
His head picks up and after having a good look at me, he rises to his feet, coming over to me. This is the first time we will actually talk after two days.
Meeting him halfway, I hold back from launching myself at him and giving him a big hug.
"Hey." I say.
"Hey."
"Is everything okay?"
"Come on." He takes my hand, leading me back to where he had been sitting.
" Is everything okay?" He sighs before releasing my hands, bringing his own up to cradle my face, leaning in and giving me a lingering kiss.
I sigh against his forehead, enjoying being close to him once again.
"You must be mad at me." He leans back to look at me.
"No, just worried." I say. "I thought something happened or I did something wrong." He shakes his head, silencing me.
" I've been thinking about the last few weeks lately and -"
"And?"
He sighs. " I know that since you've been back, that we haven't been the same again. I know that you don't trust -"
"No no, I do trust you, please don't think - ," I take both his hands in mine. "I know that I might seem different but my feelings for you haven't changed and - ," he steals a kiss, silencing me.
"And I love you, I just have been missing you so much and needing to spend more time with you, so these two weeks have been killing me, the distance. I hate the distance." He trails off.
Guilt hits at me, in realization of my mistake.
I made a mistake of being too focused on other things, being so distracted that watching me, he must have felt that I was neglecting him.
"Well two weeks have passed, now we can focus on us right?" I ask, hoping it makes him feel better.
"Can we, really?" He sighs, rising to his feet and turning his back to me.
" Danny?" I call him, rising to my feet with a frown.
"Forget what I just said." He turns back around to face me. " Tomorrow is the last day and I'll have you all to myself." He says, pulling me close, giving me a smile but it doesn't quite reach his eyes.
"Ofcourse you will, but I feel that there's something you're not telling me." I say, bringing my hand up to his face, looking into his eyes.
He sighs. " I can't help but feel afraid at the thought of possibly losing you." He says, cradling my face once again.
"You won't lose me." I tell him.
He pulls me even closer, embracing me.
"Tell me you'll be all mine starting tomorrow." He says almost in a plea.
" I'll be all yours." I say in promise, even through a small frown..
