0.4 Knowing
Knowing everything thing about someone else is special, maybe even magical. You fall in love with the little things, the things we don't notice about ourselves.
"So you don't need my help?" I asked
"No, I just wanted to see you, and I couldn't think of an actual reason to Skype you."
"So you lied Mendes?"
"No! No, no."
"Mhm."
"I do need help with a song, but I chickened out."
"What?"
"I can't tell you. I can't explain."
"Oh, okay."
"I hate lying, so I don't do it."
"Oh okay."
"I don't!" He smiled
My stomach flipped every time he smiled, I never knew why it did this. I never knew why Shawn's smile had such a strong effect on me. No one else had this power, maybe it was because he was happy, truly happy. I wish I was as happy, even if it was just for a few seconds.
"You're cute Mendes." I laughed
"You believe me?"
"Yes."
"You still with Ethan?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Why not?"
"He doesn't make you happy, and don't say he does because I know he doesn't."
"You're right, but nothing makes me happy."
"Nothing?"
"Nothing. I have to go my mom's calling me."
"Yea, I can hear her, miss you."
"Miss you too, text me later?"
"Of course."
CALL ENDED.
I walked up the stairs and into the living room. My mother was beautiful, drop dead gorgeous even. I would be honored to look like her, even have the same eye color as her, but I didn't.
I looked like my dad, the only thing that connected me to my mother was the small female features. The things that my dad simply couldn't have given me.
My mother was everything to me, she was my best friend, she and Shawn were the only true things in my life.
She sat on the couch with her long thick hair tucked into a messy bun. She sat cross-legged with her laptop and her reading glasses on. The glasses has always made her look more elegant, never nerdy nor older.
"Hey" I spoke
"Hey, I was just wondering what you were doing. At least sit up here with me."
"I was video chatting Shawn."
"Oh, I'm sorry honey."
"It's fine, he had to go." I lied
"Oh alright."
"Has dad said anything?"
"Not much, nothing has changed. They should be home next week."
"Alright."
My mother wasn't my favorite parent. I effortlessly loved both my parents, for many different reasons.
My dad was always teaching his life lessons. he was always doing things for everyone. He taught us things that should never mention, he coached our sports, even though we were absolute trash.
My brother and I both weren't into the 'Sport thing' but my dad continued to coach the community baseball league.
I fell in love with photography, the idea of beauty behind the normal. My brother got attached to video games and good grades. However, everything ended, everything changed when Cory and my dad left.
They both gave up everything in order to be together, in order to survive. I don't know who they are anymore, phone calls and text messages don't give their new personalities justice.
Ethan- [Ready babe?]
Me- [Yeah, be out in like 5 minutes]
Ethan- [K]
Me- [You can come inside and wait]
Ethan- [No I am good]
Me- [...... Alright]
I stood up from the coach then grabbed a hair tie and my sweater.
"When will you be home?" My mom asked
"I think I can only handle him fro an hour or so."
"Honey, I think Shawn's right about this boy, why are you with him?"
"See you later," I said closing the door behind me.
The truth was I didn't know why I was still with him, I didn't why I talked to anyone, why I tried so hard to stay popular. I also often wondered why these people put up with me because I was nothing special. How did none of them see through me, my bullshit and double life?
Ethan only wanted the status, the sex, he was in love with the idea of me. I often told him he was a dick in public, killing his status.
I was a virgin who wished to stay that way.
I had no interest in having sex with him, and I knew I never would. Ethan was in love with the fake version of me. He loved the thought of having me. He didn't know the real me, he had no idea.
he also wasn't the only boy that was in my life, he wasn't the only boy whom I allowed to call me his.
"Your dad still out on that work trip?"
"Yeah." I lied as I put my seatbelt on.
"Shitty."
"Yeah."
"What's up with you/"
Half my family is in Vancouver. I am not who you think I am, you know nothing. I am best friends with a famous pop singer, I am not happy.
"I'm fine."
"Kay good."
At first, I was shocked until I reminded myself. Ethan is not Shawn, he doesn't see through your lies. He doesn't know when you're truly hurting. Most importantly, Ethan doesn't care.
"So can I copy your History homework?" Ethan asked
"Why not you just do it?"
"You're smarter than me."
"Because you do shit all."
"Football is more important than school right now."
"Is it."
"Well ya."
"Grade 12, and school isn't important to do you even hear yourself?"
"Football is number two, school is number three."
"You forgot one."
"I ain't never forget you."
"I' m not the answer to your future."
"What's wrong with you?"
"Your priorities frustrate me."
"Well, sorry we aren't all missing perfect. We all don't know how to do everything right, like you."
"What? You think my life is perfect, you know nothing."
"You tell me nothing."
"Because you don't care, you don't even pretend," I yelled
"Get out!"
"Of course." I snapped
I pushed the car door open and threw my legs outside. I stood up to my feet and started to walk back towards my house. I felt the cool air as it danced along my skin.
The street lights cast shadows through the parking lot and Ethan's headlights created my silhouette. I walked straight towards the metal fence and looked through towards the old elementary school.
"You used to be so smart and full of life Sammy, what happened?" I whispered
Suddenly I felt a large force of pressure press me into the fence.
"Ethan! Get off me! I yelled trying to push him away.
"I just want to talk. I changed my mind, get back in the car."
"Fuck you!" I spat
I pushed my body out of Ethan's grip and started to walk home once again.
"Sammy!"
"Leave me alone."
"I'm sorry!"
"Don't follow me either!"
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and started to dial the number.
"Hey" I whispered into the phone
"What's wrong."
"Nothing"
"Sammy.... Please don't."
"Ethan."
"What did he do this time?"
"Kicked me out of his car, then pushed me into the fence to get me back into the car. I'm walking home, it's dark so talking to someone makes me feel a bit safer."
"Sorry Sam, but I'm like a million minutes away, I couldn't do much to save you."
"Thanks for reminding me, Shawn."
"Welcome, you haven't talked much about Cory and your dad, how are they?"
"I don't know my mom has kinda stopped telling me things."
"I'm sorry Sam."
"Yea, things suck."
"Yeah, I'm sorry I can't be there."
"I understand."
