Terrible Things- Jason x Reader

A young man with close-cropped blond hair, electric blue eyes, and golden glasses sat at the beach with another, younger and with E/C eyes, version of him.

If anyone had looked closer, however, they would've seen how his eyes belied the way he was feeling inside- shredded and imperfect, held together by a single string.

The young one piped up. "Dad, can you tell me what Mom was like and how you two met again, please?"

The man smiled down at his son with tenderness. "Of course, (B/N- boy's name)."

By the time I was your age, I'd give anything

To fall in love truly, was all I could think

That's when I met your mother, the girl of my dreams

The most beautiful woman, that I'd ever seen

"Your mom was beautiful. H/C hair, E/C eyes... she was almost as beautiful on the outside as she was in the inside."

He poked the young boy in the stomach, causing him to giggle. "In fact, you have her eyes."

"Her eyes almost always told you what she was thinking- and they were the eyes of a fierce warrior indeed. I'd just come home from the Giant War and I just wanted to settle down, find someone to live my life with."

She said, "Boy can I tell you a wonderful thing?

I can't help but notice, you're staring at me.

I know I shouldn't say this, but I really believe,

I can tell by your eyes that you're in love with me."

Now, son, I'm only telling you this

Because life can do terrible things.

"Y/N, your mom, made first advances. She was always much braver than me. She just walked up to me and flat-out asked me: 'Do you have a crush on me?' Stunned, I said yes, and asked her to go out with me. She said yes- and it was probably the happiest moment of my life."

Now, most of the time we'd have too much to drink

And we'd laugh at the stars and we'd share everything

Too young to notice, and too dumb to care

Love was a story that couldn't compare.

"Your mom was a rebel. She didn't care about rules- unless she deliberately went out of her way to break them."

"We knew each other almost better than we knew ourselves- she and I, polar opposites, the rebel girl and the disciplined, honorable, boy, fit together like puzzle pieces."

I said, "Girl, can I tell you a wonderful thing?

I made you a present with paper and string.

Open with care now, I'm asking you, please.

You know that I love you, will you marry me?"

Now, son, I'm only telling you this because life can do terrible things

You'll learn, one day, I'll hope and I'll pray, that God shows you differently.

"I proposed to her on our anniversary. I put it inside several boxes, and you should've seen her face when she had to keep pulling out boxes until there was just this tiny ring box, and I got down on my knee and asked her to marry me."

"Then there were golden days, days free of want or woe- and then we found out we were having you, and nobody could have been any happier than we were."

She said, "Boy can I tell you a terrible thing?

It seems that I'm sick and I've only got weeks.

Please, don't be sad now, I really believe,

You were the greatest thing that ever happened to me."

"It was supposed to be just a simple mission when it happened- just destroy a monster nest.  A rogue demigod from Gaea's army was about to stab me- but Y/N took it instead."

"I brought her back... there was nothing anyone could do. There was poison on the blade- poison straight from Akhlys. Apollo couldn't heal her, the Golden Fleece couldn't heal her... all we could do was sit and wait."

"And then she was gone... a hero's death."

JASON POV

Slow, so slow I fell to the ground on my knees.

Forced to the ground, the weight of the sky had been upon me since then, forcing me to my knees. People had tried to help me bear my burden, but ultimately, they could not, only the girl that had taken my heart could.

So don't fall in love, there's just too much to lose

If you're given the choice, then I beg you to choose

To walk away, walk away, don't let her get you.

I can't bear to see the same happen to you.

Part of me wished that I'd never fallen in love. Part of me said that anything was preferable to this... and yet, did I really want to live without the memory of the soft, warm, glow that was our love?

Now, son, I'm only telling you this

Because life can do terrible things

The Fates were cruel.
