Before the Stone

The streets of New York intimidate me. I am walking to the baseball park, my favorite thinking spot. I look behind my shoulder to make sure I'm not being followed.

Call it paranoia, but I feel like someone is about to jump out and attack me when I turn every corner.

I arrive at the park. It is old and rundown, with fences missing and broken scoreboards. Some people find it eerie; I find it settling.

My favorite spot is the fourth score tower. It has a little booth where the wind hits it perfectly. It is a little unstable, but I think it's perfect.

My hair whips back as I reach the top of the booth. It is especially cloudy for a day with a zero percent weather forecast. I sit down, thinking of my life.

I have been an orphan since I was a baby. Some nuns found me when I was an infant alone in the woods. I was raised in the church. I ran away when I was fourteen, never looking back. I regret not thanking the nuns, but I wasn't into the whole spirit of God thing. I met a weird man with a peculiar blue box. He took me in and helped me out. He left, though. I understand why. You can't take a defiant girl on a trip to save the world.

"Nice up here, isn't it?" a masculine voice says from behind me. I whirl around, nearly toppling off the railing. The boy behind me was blond with tanned skin and startling green eyes.

My hand slowly reaches into my back pocket and brings out my Swiss army knife. I flip it open to reveal a ten inch blade. It was a gift.

"Who are you and what do you want?" I ask and point the knife at him.

"Woah, calm down. I'm Cole Emerson," Cole says. I keep the knife tightly gripped in my hand.

"Are you with social services?" I ask. He chuckles.

"Do I really look like a social services guy to you?"

"I wouldn't know. I have never seen one," I snap.

"Cole, what the hell is taking so long?" a voice yells from below. I point the knife at him.

"Now I suggest you go before you and your buddy loose something very important to you."

"We need you to come with us," He says. I knew he was full of shit.

I attack. I catch him off guard, giving me the upper hand. I slash at his face, giving him a cut on his cheek. He takes a step back, giving me access to the stairs. I sprint down them, and out onto the field. If I can make it to the fence I'm golden.

Out of nowhere, someone tackles me. I hit the ground hard. Hands grip my wrists, pinning them above my head. I struggle, but failed to escape.

The boy pinning me down is lean with black hair and sea green eyes.

"Let me go!" I scream at him. He signs and loosens his grip a little. I being my knee to his back. He groans in pain and rolls off of me. I jump to my feet and run again. I had matured on the streets, I know how to fight.

In the distance, I see a blaze coming towards me. As it got closer, I could see it was a person on fire. Wouldn't have been the strangest thing I've ever seen.

I stop, not wanting to run into the creature.

"Girl, you need to stop injuring your kind, it's rude," it says.

"Hey Leo. What up?" Cole says. The fire dude stops being on fire. I can now see he's Hispanic.

Oh good Lord, help me.
