6: Eavesdroppers

"Harry, remind me again why we're here."

Ron whispered to me, as we eavesdropped on Hermione and Lily's conversation in the library. It had been a long day of classes, and the girls decided to hang out in the library. Well, actually, James and Sirius had a quidditch practice, and Hayley agreed to Sirius's constant begging to watch them play. Remus and Peter went off to somewhere, who knows what. So I dragged Ron along for my eavesdropping.

"Shhh. I want to know more about my parents. I know enough about James. But Lily makes me curious." I answered quietly, then put my finger over my lips and stared at the two girls, redhead and brunette, chatting away while flipping pages in books.

"James? Ew." Lily said. Great, we were getting into the juicy stuff.

"He's not too bad." Hermione said. "Oh, no, he is. And he has the same glasses as your friend Harry!" Lily said, laughing.

Hermione chuckled. "Very bizarre. So you have no feelings whatsoever for James?"

"James had set the bar so low that I am literally seeing attractiveness in every single sixth year boy I pass." Lily said, and the two started laughing, all while keeping quiet.

Ron rolled his eyes. "This is stupid, Harry. We could be watching James and Sirius play quidditch  with Hayley. And we really shouldn't be eavesdropping on two girls."

"We're comfortable. And what if they start talking about Hermione's feelings?" I said. "You can go if you please."

But Ron stayed.

"Let's talk you. I saw you and Remus Lupin in the library yesterday. What's up with that?" Lily said, a smirk on her face.

"Nothing, Remus wants me to teach him French." Hermione responded, casually flipping the page in her Herbology book to one about Mandrakes.

"Why did he pick you? I mean, Harry, Ron and Hayley can also speak French, right?"

Hermione laughed. "Oh no, Hayley is amazing at French, but Ron and Harry couldn't order food in French if their lives depended on it." Hermione sold it really well, so we'll that my mum just laughed along.

Hermione was rocking this whole Lying-about-our-identities-thing, whereas me and Ron totally sucked. Hayley wasn't doing much better than us.

"Yeah, but you are totally his type! And he seems pretty into you." Lily said.

"You know him well?" Hermione asked, while putting the book she was currently done reading back on to the shelf behind them and grabbing a new one.

"Oh yeah, he's the only member of James Potter's gang who is decent." Lily responded. "But the real question is, do you like him back?"

I could feel Ron lean a little closer in to hear.

"I mean, he's definitely got the nice personality," Hermione started, and Lily cut her off. "Yessss, that means you like like him!"

Hermione blushed, and Ron groaned. "Please, Harry can we go now?" Ron said quietly. "No, I'm staying." I said, as Ron sighed.

"Well I'm leaving." Ron said, backing out of behind the bookcase we were standing behind. Ron stepped out, in the middle of the path.

"Wait, isn't that your friend Ronaldo?" Lily asked, her eyebrows raised.

Hermione was too shocked to see Ron there to correct Lily.

"Oh my god, yeah, it is. Ronaldo, what are you doing here?!" Hermione said, in a way that showed she knew exactly what we were doing.

"I mean, er, like, I was- um, Harry, have you found that book yet?" Ron said, saving himself at the end. Oh shoot. Ron was bringing me into this. I grabbed the closet book to me, which was unfortunately, "The Guide to Getting Women To Like You."

I didn't notice though, and I walked into the path between the bookshelves where Ron was standing.

"Yeah, Ron, I got it." I held up the book, fake smiling.

The girls and Ron started gawking at me. "What?" I said, confused, until I turned the cover so it faced me.

My eyes widened.

"Why, Harry, do you have that?"

"Probably to make that black haired girl like him." Lily whispered to Hermione, loud enough that I could still hear.

"I do not like Hayley!" I said, a little too quickly and defensively. "And she has a boyfriend!"

Ron shook his head.

"A boyfriend? Like a long distance one she met in France?" Lily asked. Hermione gave me a knowing look, saying I shouldn't give anymore details, but I ignored it stupidly.

"Yeah, his name is Seamus Finnigan, and he's a-" I would have continued, but Ron slapped a hand over my mouth.

"Privacy reasons." He said. But the damage was done.

"Oh really, how interesting. But I'm pretty sure you don't need that book." Lily got up off her chair, then motioned towards the book.

She got a real good look at my face. "You actually look like that creep James Potter."

I could see Hermione slap her forehead.

"Oh yeah, James already said that....." I said, then thought of something.

"So um yeah, if you want to come, me and Ronaldo- I mean Ron, we're going to watch Sirius and James practice quidditch with Hayley."

Lily shook her head. "Nom it's fine, I'm going to stay here and study."

Hermione nodded. "I need the extra practice. You guys go."

We left the library, but I made sure to put that book back on a shelf, so no more girls thought we were weirdos.

"That was a close call." I said, relieved as we walked through the hallways to the quidditch pitch.

"Look, you're brilliant sometimes mate, but really, did you have to pick up that particular book?" Ron said as we turned on the stairs, and the entrance to the quidditch pitch revealed itself before our eyes.

"It was very random, I didn't pick it up on purpose." I protested. We walked out of the castle and entered the bright green quidditch pitch. My eyes immediately flew to the other side of the pitch, where just a day ago me and my friends fell from 1996 and my watch was lost. I shook the persistent voice in my head that was saying "How do we get back?"

I wanted to enjoy some time with my parents before we had to go.

"Blimey, they are fast." Ron said, his neck craned to look up. I looked up as well to find the members of the Gryffindor quidditch team zooming above us. We carefully walked along the side of the wall then walked up the stairs on to the stands.

Hayley was a couple seats down, clapping as Sirius successfully defended a bludger. "Oh, hey guys!" Hayley said, pointing to the two empty seats beside her. Ron and I sat down. "How's the practice been?" Ron asked.

"Oh, its been great! James," Hayley looked around and whispered, "Your dad is extraordinary at playing the seeker. Sirius has defended so many bludgers, they were really fantastic at playing."

"Speak of the devil." Hayley said as they players got off the playing pitch and Sirius headed towards us.

"Impressive, right?" Sirius asked, obviously hoping the answer was yes.

"You were great." I said nicely, but Sirius ignored me. "Hayley?" He said.

"Oh yeah, you were okay," she said coolly. Ron and I exchanged knowing glances once again. Sirius frowned and nodded his head towards James. "James and I are off scour the library. Wanna come?"

I furrowed my brows. Why were Sirius and James going to the library? From what Remus and and Sirius had told me back in the 1990's, they were the popular, sporty library avoiders. But a small inkling in my head told me that it would be important to follow them.

"Seriously, didn't we just come from the library?" Ron grumbled, but Hayley and I said, "Sure!"

So we ran off to the library for the second time that day. I was starting to feel a bit like Hermione.
