Chapter Thirty-Five

Peggy, Howard, and Evangeline all braced for the explosion that would shake the Earth to its very core as the bullet soared through the air and slammed into her chest. She could feel the small piece of metal enter her skin, fracture into multiple little specks, and pierce her beating heart, where the highest concentration of super-human magma lay within her body. In an instant, they knew it was all over. No one would know the story of what happened that day they arrived back in the States, all that would be left was a steaming canyon where a mountain used to be.

At least, that's what they thought.

Her back hit the hard ground and pain shot through Angie's nerves, as if she were made of glass and was slowly shattering into a million pieces. The back of her skull crashed against the asphalt and sent dark spots in the corners of her vision. Although the agony scorching her insides and cooking herself from the inside-out raged violently through her flesh, she was dead. If she could feel the pain, that meant she still had enough of a corpse to tell her she'd been severely injured.

Despite their assumptions, Evangeline hadn't been the kind of bomb everyone feared she could be. She wasn't the kind of threat that made her an involuntary enemy to the allies around her. If anything, she turned out to be the complete opposite.

The bullet within her chest melted within the veins of super-human magma running through her body. As she sat up and started to comprehend the fact that they were all still alive, her glowing fiery fingertips had started to dim and instead of pure hell-fire orange and red coating her skin, it was replaced by a metallic red and the liquid form of the chemical began to change. Instead of dripping from her hands like water, the chemical began to harden, as if she'd just dipped her entire forearm in clay that was slowly beginning to dry.

"What the hell?"

Howard's voice brought her back to reality and the super-human jumped back into the action. With the new amazing knowledge that bullets couldn't end her life, Evangeline got to her feet and headed straight for the nearest enemy, who just so happened to have his robotic arm wrapped around Peggy and his real hand holding the gun that should've killed her. Each time he pulled the trigger, another bullet would lodge itself somewhere in Angie's torso, but wouldn't slow her down. Instead, the lead from the bullets continued to build up on her fists like a pair of metal boxing-gloves.

"Wait, Angie, wait!" Howard tried to warn her as the other goon started dragging him into the other vehicle, but it was too late- she'd already crossed the distance between the limo and her target, her right fist pulled back, preparing for the punch.

As soon as her metal knuckles made contact with her enemy's head, he was done for. The now-solid chemicals built up on her fists exploded on impact and vaporized the Hydra soldier all the way down to his hips, leaving nothing behind but a stump with legs and s traumatized Peggy lying on the ground a few feet away, forced backwards and knocked off her feet by the blast. What remained of the man collapsed, the only movement from the remains being the disturbing twitches and jolts of the leg-muscles slowly dying.

Two bad guys down. One left to go.

He knew that she was coming for him, it was obvious as the last soldier quickly shoved Howard into the car, slammed the door behind him, and tried to get into the driver's seat of the vehicle. She made it to the car before he could even open the door and punched him in the face, though this time her victim didn't explode since no bullets had been fired in her direction after that. Instead, her fist just left a blister the size of her palm on his cheek and the man fell back, curling into a ball on the ground as he screamed and covered the horrible burn on his face. Angie didn't bother finishing him off; the super-human walked right past him and opened Howard's door.

"You alright?" She asked the millionaire and helped him out of the vehicle by taking his hand. "He didn't hurt you, did he?"

"You're worried about me?" Howard gasped with wide eyes as he stared at the woman before him. "You just pulverized that guy with your fist and you're worried about me right now?"

"At least we're all alive," Peggy got to her feet and made her way briskly towards the other two individuals. A red mark on the left side of her face was apparent and multiple blisters that ranged in size from a dime to silver dollar were beginning to appear on her cheek, though not as severely as the Hydra soldier's face. Obviously from the heat of Angie's death-punch, but at least she'd live, unlike the both of Angie's 'explosive subjects'. "I assume we'll be taking that one with us?"

Their attention turned to the man still crying on the ground, cradling his burnt cheek. From further inspection of the scene, it appeared that the hit must've done a lot more damage than just burning the man. As he lay there, curled in the fetal position, his teeth were stained with red and his shouts of pain were sloppy, as if something was wrong with his tongue as well. Swollen? Completely roasted?

"Sounds like his tongue's busted," Howard folded his arms. "He'll bleed out if we don't him with us."

"Maybe he could write?" Peggy suggested as the three continued to casually watch the suffering soldier writhe in pain. "His hands are fine, I bet he could answer our questions that way."

"Wait a second," An idea entered the millionaire's mind and he quickly jogged over to the crying man on the ground. He grabbed the man's arm and yanked it away from the hole in his face before raising an eyebrow and a small smirk appeared on his lips. "Well, isn't that a kicker. No chloroform tooth for this guy."

"Every Hydra agent we've come across seems to always have a way of committing suicide via tooth implant," the British agent explained to Angie when Howard's strange sentence caused a puzzled expression to appear on the super-human's face.

"Either he never had one or you literally knocked it out of the park," Mr.Stark chuckled at his own choice of words, causing both ladies to roll their eyes and shake their resigned, smiling heads. "Guess we're taking their car now?"

Considering that their vehicle was missing two doors and the windows had shattered from Evangeline's first explosion, it appeared that they didn't have any other choice. Though none of them seemed too beat-up about it, since Hydra seemed to care very much about the style in which their agents travel; the bad guys' car was much nicer than their own. So Howard raced Peggy for the driving right and Angie did her best to knock out their new hostage without killing him, then began to drag his limp body back to their new ride.

"This was fun," Mr.Stark grinned as he started up the shiny new car with a rev of the engine, opened the glove compartment of the passenger's side and let out a happy shout at the sight of new cigars sitting cozily in a private compartment next to an intricately designed silver lighter, and passed two of them to the ladies accompanying him. With the flick of his thumb, he lit theirs first before lighting his own expensive cigar and took a big smoke. "We should do this more often."

And they were off once again.
