Chapter Twelve

"NO!"

As soon as the word left his lips, he suddenly appeared on that same roof as her body, but Shredder was gone.

He took one look at her body and immediately felt sick to his stomach. The gun was still in her hand and the pool of blood surrounding her head shimmered with an evil darkness in the moonlight. He fell to his knees beside her body and felt the tears growing, then spilling over and dripping into the puddle of red, causing ripples to spread across its surface.

"No...." He whimpered and reached out to touch her, but quickly pulled his hand back, as if her skin was a heating furnace that could burn him. The last pleasant time they had shared together echoed through his memory, her voice filling his soul.

' "What I said was that we should go to Central Park in the winter time, when the ground is completely white and coated in freshly fallen snow. Of course we'd go at night, though, to avoid any unwanted eyes. I'm sure Splinter would be fine with that if we only go out for a few minutes, just long enough for me to kick your shell at snow-ball fighting." She repeated, a small but tired grin on her lips.

He couldn't tell because her voice had been so energized, but she had actually been quite exhausted from the day's events. And she should've been. It couldn't have been easy to drag not only herself but him as well out of that river against the current. Her muscles were probably like goo at this point and her bones must've been stiff from the cold. He knew his were.

Raph smiled back, a genuine smile.

"Yeah. I'm sure Sensei would be fine with just a few minutes of fun." '

Raph let out a loud sob at the memory, at the fact that they'd never get to go to Central Park together, Madi would never school him at their first snow ball fight. He'd never see her beautiful smile again.

The scene suddenly changed with a whirl of buildings and the ground slipping out from beneath him til he was falling, straight down into a black hole of nothingness that seemed to have no end. But he didn't care about that at the moment.

What he cared about was the blood that coated his hands in a thick layer of red.

But he hadn't touched the pool of red.

So where had the blood come from?

She woke up the next morning with something heavy laying across her legs, pinning them down to the mattress. Madi knew without even looking what it was. 'Who' to be more precise. And it wasn't just one person, no. It was two. Realizing that she wasn't in her own bedroom, Madi looked around at her surroundings.

The walls were decked out with posters of Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, and Charles Darwin, which kind of weirded Madi out. There was a desk that had been squeezed into the corner of the room covered in science books, and the floor was littered with empty energy drink cans. Yep, she was in Donnie's room. It was obvious enough.

The curiosity got to her finally after a few minutes of just laying there and she peeked over the covers at her legs. The first person she saw was her German Shephard, Samantha. The guard dog rested where she used to back at their previous home, right across her thighs. But when she saw Mikey resting across her shins, snoring peacfully, she couldn't help but wonder how he'd gotten there in the first place.

"Mikey?" Madi nudged him gently with her foot. The mutant turtle made a noise that sounded like something between a yawn and a whimper, wiggled slightly, but kept his butt planted where it was. She couldn't deny that he was kind of adorable as he slept at her feet like her dog, but she needed to check on Raph. She couldn't afford wasting any time.

Moving and squirming her legs around, she wormed her way out from underneath the mass of the two bodies, rolling onto the floor. Sam immediately woke up from the sudden movement from her owner and peered over the edge of the bed at the girl on the ground. Making her traditional gesture that meant 'stay' to the dog, Sam obeyed and continued to lay by Mikey as Madi stood up and exited the bedroom, careful not to wake up Mikey.

After quietly closing the door behind herself, Madi turned around and immediately ran into Donnie, who nearly dropped the large object he had been carrying. She quickly reached out and grabbed Donnie's arm, steadying him and stopping him from face-planting forward, and observed what was currently in the turtle's grasp.

The sweet breafast-like smell of bacon and eggs drifted out from underneath a domed-silver platter, a large glass of orange juice sitting next to it. A carefully folded white napkin rested beneath a silver fork, butter knife, and spoon. Donnie had made a very special breakfast.

"Sorry." Madi whispered, aplogizing for nearly knocking the poor guy over. He smiled sheepishly.

"It's alright." He replied, then nodded down the hall. "Why don't we talk in the kitchen?"

"Okay." She whispered back and followed the mutant turtle down the hallway and into the living area of the sewer. Donnie set the tray of food on the kitchen table, then turned to face Madi, who was still in her Space Hero pajamas. "Good morning, Donnie." she properly greeted him with a big, yet tired, smile.

"Good morning, Madi." He spoke, then rubbed the back of his neck nervously with his hand. "I...uh...I guess you kind of figured out the surprise I was planning for you this morning." The brainiac said, looking from the platter of breakfast to Madi.

"You made that for me?" She asked him. He nodded. Madi's smile got even bigger as she leaned forward and wrapped her arms around him, enveloping him in a big hug. She felt his heart beating rapidly in his chest as he slowly hugged her back, wrapping his own arms around her. "Thank you, Donnie. That was very sweet of you."

"No problem, Madi."
