Chapter Nine

When Raph walked in with Madi's body in his arms, all eyes were on him. Madi's head rested on his plastron, soaked to the bone, eyes closed, but shivering. Shivering was good, it meant that she was alive and breathing. Unlike the story Leo, Donnie, and Mikey had told everyone when they got home after Raph's plunge into the river. No one said a word. They all just stared in shock. Not even Sam reacted because the dog believed it was only her imagination.

Lisa, April, Mikey, and Jacob were sitting on the couch and grieving as a group with Sam resting at their feet. Donnie sat at the kitchen table, hunched over with his head hidden in his arms and shaking every few seconds, obviously crying silently. Leo and Splinter's voices could be heard from within the dojo, doing something that had been unheard of:

Arguing.

They must've been at it for a while since the others didn't seem so fazed by their hollaring and shouting. Raph was so shocked that he nearly dropped Madi. Sensei never shouted unless they were in serious trouble. This must've been worse than he thought it was.

Raph put on the meanest, angriest glare that he could muster up and held Madi closer in his arms, staring down each one of his brothers for their lack of hope in Madi's survival abilities, then marched straight to Donnie, who's shoulder still shook with silent sobs, then kicked his chair out from underneath him

"Hey! What the she-" Before Donnie could finish his sentence, he looked up, eyes red from crying, and his jaw dropped.

"What had you guys said?" Raph asked sarcastically. " 'It's no use'?"

"Raph-"

"April, we're gonna need some dry clothes for her." Raph interupted, looking over to the couch. April nodded and quickly ran to her room. "Lisa, you should go get the bath running so that Madi can warm up faster." Madi's mother sprinted to where he had told her to go and did as he said. From the look on Raph's face, everyone knew better than to mess with him. From the sound of Donnie and Raph's stern voice, Leo and Splinter exited the dojo and saw the current situation. "Jake, go get some blankets from Madi's room. Mikey, go with him and get some pillows." After the boys sprinted out of the room to follow his orders, Raph walked over to the couch and set her down.

"Raphael," Splinter began as he approached his son. The rat quickly made his way from the exit of the dojo to the living area and wrapped his arms around his son. He had feared the worst, that they had lost him and not just Madi. But he was thankful that that wasn't the case. As soon as his flesh came in contact with his son's, he knew that something was severely wrong. Raphael was too cold. Madi wasn't the only one at risk of hypothermia. His eyes widened at his pupil.

"Leonardo," he said,"Quickly. Go get Raphael a blanket, as well."

"I'm fine, Sensei. Really-"

"No, Raphael. You are even more at risk of hypothermia than Madi is." Splinter then turned to Leo, realized that the turtle hadn't moved an inch to fulfill his orders, and sent him an icy glare. "Leonardo. Blanket. Now." Leo glared right back, but did as he was told. Now that everyone was gone doing something to help Madi, he looked down at the girl who had truly rescued him and not the other way around.

"What's up with him?"

"That is none of your concern. Now tell me what happened."

Long story short: Raph found out that when his brothers came home empty-handed and missing a sibling, everyone had assumed the worst. Master Splinter blamed Leo for the fact that Raph had been missing as well, which explained the fighting between the pupil and sensei. It was nearly impossible for Madi's mother and her friends to be mad at her for what she did; they were too relieved that she was back home, safe. But that didn't mean she'd get off of this one scratch-free. Madi was grounded until she died. Which meant no more school, no more friends, no more band practice with the 'TAF's, which seemed like a given since everyone thought she was dead anyway.

That night, when everyone else was snuggled all cozy-like in their own beds, Madi and Raph were forced to sleep out in the livingroom because it was the warmest out of all the rooms in the sewer, wrapped up in so many blankets that the only piece of their bodies exposed were their faces. But Madi wasn't complaining because she knew that she had gotten out of a more severe punishment than just getting grounded. And Raph wasn't complaining because he personally enjoyed the tension between Splinter and Leo. For once, he actually felt like the favorite kid in his family.

"I think they believed your whole 'hero' story." Madi whispered to him through the darkness. He was sitting on one side of the couch, Madi sitting on the other. It was past five in the morning and they were still awake, but Raph didn't care. He wasn't really that tired. Raph smirked at her words.

"Ya' think so?"

"Yeah." She replied.

There was a moment of silence as the lights from the TV flashed through out the room and into the dark kitchen. The two weren't really paying attention to what was on, which happened to be an infomercial for some crazy Ninja blender that could blend an entire can or something along those lines.

"I'm bored." she sighed. Raph chuckled.

"Well, there's not much you can do at five in the morning without causing much trouble. And trouble is the last thing you need right now." He told her, only half kidding on that subject. They were quiet again for a while. Then Madi spoke.

"What's your second favorite color?" She asked him. He looked at her like she'd grown a second head.

"What?"

"You heard me."

"What exactly is the purpose of asking that?"

"Maybe I just want to get to know you better. Does that seem like a shock?"
