Chapter Thirteen

After Madi had left her bedroom, she had entered the living room with her pilow in hand. The other three were standing around the kitchen table, having a not-so-subtle angry-looking whispering conversation with eachother. Madi watched them for a moment, catching small pieces of phrases like, "-is insane" and "I can't believe you'd do this-". She raised an eyebrow, when Jacob whispered, "Maybe we could use this to our advantage." Madi glared at them as she cleared her throat, letting her three other friends realize that she was watching them. They all turned around, looking like deer caught in the headlights.

"What's up, guys? Is something wrong?" she asked them.

"Everything's fine. Right guys?" Jacob asked, giving the other two death-glares, as if he was daring them to disagree with him. Daniel and April were glaring at each other from across the table, angry expressions on their faces that were unreadable as to why they were that way.

"Yeah, everything's just great." April hissed sarcastically, not looking away from Madi's boyfriend.

"Never been better." Daniel replied in a similar tone.

"Wow, I'm totally reassured. Thanks, guys." Madi said, mocking their tones. "Look, I have no idea what your problems are, but we should all just be happy that Jeff is okay. We could've gone to his old place and found something way less pleasent. We all know how bad that part of NYC is, and if what he said about the gangs becoming violent again is true, then we could've found a dead body instead of him alive and well." The other three were silent as they took in that information, realizing that Madi was right.

"You're right, Madi. We should all just be happy that we didn't find his corpse rotting in a garbage disposal." Daniel stated simply. Madi elbowed him in the ribs, causing him to flinch and realize just how insensitive his words had sounded. "Sorry." he muttered.

After that, the four had sat down in the living room, the two boys sitting on the floor with their backs resting against the couch, and the girls sitting on the cushions with their legs folded underneath them so that they don't hit the guys in the face. After a long debate, the group had agreed on watching 'Lone Survivor' as their nightly movie. Madi and April had never seen the movie before, but Daniel and Jacob had. The girls were into the bloody stuff and Mark Wahlberg, too. Action movies weren't just for guys, and the two girls made sure that the two dudes knew it. Madi looked at the clock and saw that it was nearly 10:00 P.M.

"If I fall asleep during the movie, don't wake me up 'til morning. I have to go to church tomorrow." Madi said as she took the bowl of popcorn and grabbed a handful, then tossed a few pieces into her mouth.

"Madi," Daniel started with a smirk. "We all go to the same church. We all need to wake up early, not just you." April and Jacob grinned and started to chuckle. Madi scoffed and rolled her eyes, then gently nudged the back of his head with her foot. Soon after, the movie started. The beginning was really cool, but what Madi and April were interested in was one of the soldiers.

"No way, isn't that Cato from 'The Hunger Games'?" Madi whispered to April.

"Yeah. It's Alexander Ludwig." April replied.

"He looks good in camo." Madi stated as she took another bite of popcorn.

"I heard that." Daniel whispered up to her.

"He isn't as good-looking as you, though." Madi whispered to Danny. Daniel smiled, satisfied, as they continued to watch the movie. As time went by, the two girls were surprised by how many times Mark Wahlberg and his co-stars rolled down mountainsides. Each time they would hit rocks on their way down, Madi and April would flinch, so would Danny. Jacob didn't seem fazed by it at all.

Slowly though, as the sound of bullets being fired and scenes flashed on her TV screen, Madi began to grow tired and gradually her eyes began to shut. Laying down on her side, pulling her knees up to her chest and resting her head on the arm-rest, she stared at the TV past Daniel's head. Within seconds of her head touching the cushion, she was out like a light.

After the movie was over and the credits began to roll, Daniel turned the TV off with the remote, then looked up at the clock. It was almost midnight. He looked over to his right and saw that all three of his friends were passed out, snoring quietly as they slept.

He stood up, knowing that this was as good a time as any. Quietly, he tip-toed down the hall to Madi's bedroom and slowly opened the door. All he could see was darkness. He didn't want to turn the light on and risk waking the others, so he blindly relied on his ninja abilities to get himself across the room and to Madi's bed. Daniel reached his hands out in front of him, his palms pressing against the cool blue comforter. After a few seconds, his fingers finally locked onto the object he had been looking for.

Madi's cell phone.

Sitting down on the side of her bed, Danny turned her phone on. Seeing that she had a password on it, he pulled the little chip he had been given for this mission out of the left pocket of his jeans, he plugged it into her cell phone and immediately gained passage, then unplugged it and shoved it back into his pocket. With a guitly heart, he searched through her apps until he found her contacts list.

He knew that this was going to crush her if she found out. Daniel knew that she would be devastated and heart-broken, but he was a soldier. A good soldier. Which meant that he obeyed every last one of the orders given to him. No matter who they would hurt. He slid his hand into his right pocket and pulled out a different chip.

A tracking device.

"I'm so sorry, Madi." he whispered, kissed the chip, then plugged it into her cell phone. A spinning loading circle appeared on the screen and a number beneath it said:

Daniel watched as the circle spun round and round, taunting him, making him feel even more guilty than he already did.

His heart thudded loudly in his chest. Was this such a good idea after all? If this mission was a success, then he'd obviously be promoted to Lieutenant and if he continued his spying job, he'd just keep getting promoted until he replaced Karai as second in command. The reward was too good to be true. He knew deep down that this was definately worth all the trouble.

But the longer he thought about it, the more he considered how Madi would feel during all of this. She obviously woudln't understand, she'd feel betrayed, she may even hate him for it. Thinking about how awful she'd feel made his heart ache. After all, he did love her. He wouldn't have done this job if he didn't think she'd be safe. After all, Shredder did say that he wouldn't harm her.

Suddenly, he heard the sound of footsteps in the hall. Eyes growing wide in fear, he quickly hid the light coming from the screen of the phone under his palm, then quickly crawling to his knees and hiding behind the bed. Daring another look at the screen, he saw the loading sign still spinning.

Just a little more time, that's all he needed, then he was in the clear. Then he could go back to the living room and fall asleep on the floor as if he had never done this in the first place. Both April and Jacob knew who he truly was, that he was apart of the Foot clan. That's what they had been whisper-fighting about earlier. But the other two knew that if they told Madi, it would break her heart. So they had all agreed to keep their mouthes closed about it.

"Daniel? Is that you?" he heard someone whisper. Quickly yanking out the chip and hiding Madi's phone under her bed, he stood up and yawned, his own phone present in his grasp. Standing in the door way, rubbing her eyes, was the angel/future victim herself.

"Hey, Beautiful." he told her with a tired grin.

"What are you doing in here? It's nearly midnight." she told him, yawning. He slid his hands in his pockets, feeling the two computer chips.

"I was just looking for a spare blanket and pillow." he said, then gestured to her bed. "Why don't you get some sleep?" he asked her. Groggily, still half asleep, she trudged over to her bed and laid down, hiding beneath the covers. Laying down beside her, making sure that he was ontop of the covers and not under, he put his arm around her and she cuddled up close to him, resting her head on his chest.

"Good-night, Danny-Boy." Madi whispered.

"Good-night, Madi-Girl." he whispered back, the guilt finally starting to get to him as he began to feel a lump in his throat. The sound of her exhausted voice softened his heart even more.

"I love you." Madi said, her voice fading as she fell back asleep. That was the last straw. Danny could feel the tears of guilt and betrayal starting to surface. He tightened his grip around her, holding her close, knowing that he had very little time left with her before the truth would be revealed.

"I love you, too."
