Chapter 8

The next day, Alex took James to the doctors for a check up. He came back home without the bandage around his head. With that now gone, they could all see a semi large cut near his temple. The doctor also said he could get the cast off his arm in another month.

Until that time, it was Jacobs responsibility to care for Mist and Chevy. And training a mustang was harder than he thought it would be. She didn't even like the brush. David told Jacob to take it slow with her, so together they worked with her. First, David brought over a long whip and simply ran it across her back. This got her used to things running across her body, and by the end of the first day, Jacob was able to brush her out without any problems. This was rare though, David said it took Peters gelding, Indian Feather, over a month to let them pet him and brush him out.

She had been there for three days. It was one in the morning, and James couldn't sleep. he had yet to visit Chevy. In fact, he hadn't even seen her since the night of the accident.

James slowly opened up the barn door and slipped in. He was greeted by a small moo from Rocky, who was growing like a weed. His own mare, Mist, stuck her nose out of the bars of her stall and nibbled a bit on his shirt. He smiled and kissed her nose.

As he approached Chevy's stall, he heard her kick the gate and let out a frustrated neigh. She stopped when she caught sight of him. She came over to the bars and sniffed him through them.

"Hi." He said. He didn't even realize how tight him voice sounded. She seemed to sense his nervousness, and she let out a small neigh. James slowly opened up her stall gate and slipped inside her stall. She backed away a little bit but was stopped by the wall. She let out a small snort, and James raised his non broken arm up to her. She sniffed it and her ears pricked up. "Hi, Chevy." She approached him slowly and sniffed the cast on his arm, moving up to the gash on his cheek and temple. She snorted and steppes back again.

"Yes, you did so that, but I'm fine."He smiled. She just stood there, listening to him speak. He slowly backed out of the stall and locked the latch tightly before heading back inside.

The next morning brought irritations and stress. Ginny insisted they all help planning her wedding. Jacob was falling asleep at the table and whenever she held up fabrics or flowers, asking his opinion, he wouldn't even look, he'd simply point because he knew it would be his mother that did most of color schemes.

After an hour, James came down stairs and grabbed Jacob by the arm.

"I'm taking Jake!" He said as they ran out the door. Jacob shut the door and ran after his twin who had gotten into the old truck that the kids are allow to drive. Jacob got into the drivers seat next to James, who wasn't allowed to drive because of his arm.

"Where are we going?" He asked.

"Just drive. We won't have to help any more if you drive fast!" James said. Jacob shrugged and started the truck, putting it into drive and driving quickly out of the driveway.

"Can you tell me now, that way I know where to go?" Jacob asked. James told him to take a right on the road. James continued to tell him directions until they pulled into a driveway Jacob didn't know.

"Where are we?" He asked. He was answered when he saw Brook coming out of the large barn too their right. The twins hopped out of the truck and she smiled at the two of them.

"They're this way." She said.

"Who?" Jacob asked James, but he said nothing, and followed Brook. He wwas soon answered when they climbed the hay loft and Jacob could hear the slight cry of kittens. She led them too a small area where a mother cat was lying on her side while six small kittens were nursing her. They all varied in colors, from white to orange, to black. They look about five weeks old. Brook smiled and scooped the one small orange kitten into her arms.

"This is the one." She said. James smiled and took the kitten from her. The baby's eyes were widened and it let out a small squeal.

"He's the only male." Brook said.

"What's going on?" Jacob asked. James held the kitten out to Jacob.

"This little guy is Jewels birthday present. Mama wants this birthday to be special, since she's finally ten." He said. Jacob now recalled how Jewel was excited for her birthday in a week. "She's told dad she wants a kitten for about three years now." Jacob smiled and took the kitten from his brother. The little baby clung to his shirt with his claws.

"What's his name?" Jacob asked Brook.

"Jewel gets to decide." She said. Jacob smiled a bit.

"So it'll be Garfield." James laughed and nodded agreement. Jewel wasn't the best at picking out names. Brook took the kitten back from Jacob and put him back with his mother and sisters.

"My mama said you can pick him up the day before Jewels birthday."

She said. James nodded his thanks and they climbed out of the loft. They headed back to the truck. Just then, a young woman around Ginny's age came around the barn with a black gelding. She smiled and led the gelding over too them.

"Hi Summer, Gosling." James said petting Gosling on his nose. "Summer, this is my twin, Jacob. Jacob, this is Brooks sister, Summer." Summer smiled and shook his hand.

"I heard what you did to save James." She said. Jacob bit his lip.

"It was nothing." He said. all three of them stared at Jacob.

"You saved his life! I saw it happen!" Brook said. James smiled a bit and patted his brother on his back. "By the way, how is she?"

"She's doing good." Jacob said simply.

"Chevy and I are friends now." James said grinning like an idiot.

"Since when?" Brook asked.

"Last night. Couldn't sleep so I went and talked to her. She said she was sorry." He said in a matter of fact tone. Brook smiled.

"Well it's good you two are getting along now." She said. James smiled and nodded.

"Well we better head back. I have to feeling Ginny will want to murder Jacob." He said. Jacob smiled a bit.

"I'll do anything to get out of wedding planning." He said. Brook let out a small laugh, and Jacob and James climbed into the truck.

"So we'll pick little Kitty boy in a week." James said to Brook through the open window. She nodded and Jacob pulled out of the driveway and headed back to their house.

Throughout the week, Jacob and David trained with Chevy. James watched as they got her used to the blanket on her back. Occasionally she'd tease them by letting them come close enough to her right before she danced away. They did this for about four days before she finally let them put the blanket and the saddle on her. The day before Jewels tenth birthday, David, James, Jacob, and Mil all piled into the truck and drove over to Brooks farm. Brook was waiting for them, holding the Orange kitten in her arms. they had to make it fast because Jewel thought they were simply getting the mail. Mil got to hold the Kitten on the ride home, after David had paid Brooks mom the money for the kitten, and they hurried home.

The kitten spent the night in a crate with all his needs in Alex and Davids bathroom. They never allowed anyone in there anyway.

David took Jewel, Julian, and Joseph to lunch and a movie in town that day while the rest of the family prepared the house for her surprise party. balloons and streamers were hung in the barn and even the horses and Rocky were wearing party hats. In the entry way of the barn hung a huge sign that Ginny and Mil had made, saying Happy birthday Jewel! Guests started to arrive minutes before David was due to bring Jewel home. Jewels friends from school and church were all invited and so were their neighbors. Brook, Lily, and Daniella came with their families too.

"Their coming up the drive way!" Mil yelled. Everyone fell silent and Alex shut the barn doors so the sign and party decorations and people were all hidden from view. They all fell silent and listened as the truck came to a stop and the doors were slammed shut. They heard footsteps go towards the house and Jewel ran in.

"Mama? Ginny? Daddy, where is everyone?" She asked.

"Why don't you go check in the barn." He suggested. Jewel ran to the barn and pulled open the doors.

"Surprise!" Everyone shouted.
