Chapter 5
Jacob was quiet as they rode down the dirt road to the Johnson's. Peter, Ginny, and Mil were riding with him. Ginny was riding her mare named Gold Dust. She was a beautiful Buckskin with silky black mane and tail. Peter was riding his horse named Indian Feather. He was a mustang gelding that was a paint. Mil was riding her horse named Coal, also a gelding that was black. Finally, Jacob was riding Mist. James had given him permission to ride his horse since she needed exercise and he wasn't allowed to ride until he was fully healed.
They reached the Johnson's within half an hour. Jacobs three siblings agreed to go slow for his sake. When they arrived there, Jacob was surpised to see Brook there, But he soon learned that Her best friend, Daniella, was Shawns little sister. When they dismounted and led their horses into the barn, Brook ran to Jacob and hugged him tightly. He didn't object at all, Even when He saw Ginny raise an eyebrow at the two of them.
"How's James?" Daniella asked Peter.
"Better. He came home this morning. He looked pretty beat up." He told the two girls. They all stopped talking when they heard a loud bang and a neigh in protest. Daniella led them over too one of the stalls. Jacob caught his breath as he saw the same bay mare from the night before.
"They brought her here until her leg is healed. She's been kicking the walls trying to get out all morning."
"Peter said there were two mares, where's the second?" Ginny asked. Daniella gave her a sad look.
"They put her out of her misery after they got James in the ambulence." She said.
"How did you know?" Brook asked her friend curiously. Daniella rose an eyebrow.
"It's all over the news. I'm surprised reporters aren't at your door. Everyone in the west practically wants to know what happened to him." She said. She took them all into her house and turned on the television. On channel four news, a video of James being carried into the ambulence was up. It then showed a video of people outside the BLM in Palomino Valley with signs saying to kill the bay mare, saying she was dangerous. Below the news clip was the title saying, "16 year old James Maxwell, attacked by vicious wild mustang!"
"We're still waiting to hear from young James' Parents to hear what they have to say and to hear their point of view on the matter." Said the blond news anchor. Daniella flipped switch off and turned to the other five in the room.
"This is bad." Brook said. She ran out of the house and into the barn. The others made no move to follow her, so Jacob did. He found her in front of the mares stall. She was sitting on a hay bale set out from the night before.
"How can all those people put a label on her, like dangerous. Yes she hurt James and Tom, but she was scared." Brook said. Her voice was quivering as she looked at the mare who was kicking at the wall. Jacob sat down next to her and took her hand. He saw her cheeks turn pink as his skin touched her.
"It was all new to her. The flashing lights, people. She was injured and her friend was dying, I don't blame her for freaking out." Brook continued. Jacob nodded a bit, glancing at the beautiful mare. The vet had bandaged up her leg the best she could that morning, since she was jumping everywhere the whole time. Brook stood and ran over to the bars on her stall, staring at the mare, who was staring at Jacob.
"Jacob, last night, she stopped when she saw you..." She said looking back at him. He nodded and stood, joining her at the bars.
"Yeah, what about it?" He asked.
"She seems to like you." She said. The Mare stopped kicking and came up to Jacob, nibbling a bit on his shirt. He smiled a bit and stroked her nose with his finger. She had a beautiful blaze that ran down her face, and stopped at her nose. He slowly stroked it through the bars.
"She needs a name." Jacob said. Brook let out a deep sigh.
"I don't think it's right to name her since the public will force her to be put to death within a week." Brook said. Jacob shuddered at the thought.
"Well why don't we show everyone she's a good horse, that she was just frightened." He suggested. Brook rose an eyebrow.
"I doubt it'll work, She hurt two people." She said. Jacob let out a defeated sigh.
"Well, what if my family adobts her? If the media sees that James is willing to forgive her, maybe they will too." He said.
"Do you really think James will be willing to forgive her after she almost killed him?" She smirked.
"Okay," He said folding his arms and leaning up against the stall, facing her. "Sounds like you want her dead too." he said. She blushed deeply and glared at him.
"Of coarse not!" She said hotly. now it was his turn to smirk.
"Then stop being so negitive!" He laughed. She rolled her eyes. She was about toto say somehing when Daniella ran in with Jacobs siblings behind her.
"Incoming!" She shouted. They were confused for a moment, but soon learner what she meant as about thirty vans pulled up into the drive way and people clamored out with cameras and microphones. They ran over to the six of them, pointing their microphones at them and all speaking at once. Jacob could only hear a few things like, "Do you know James Maxwell," And "What is your opinion on the attack." Several even turned to the mare, shooting pictures of her. the flashes and people talking was too much for her, and she cowered in the corner, with her ears pinned down and her teeth bared. Seeing the mare cower made Jacob angery at them all.
"Stop it!" He yelled. They all went quiet and turned to him, occasionally snapping a picture of him.
"It's James!" One reported said, they all once again began talking all at once. They were surrounded, no way to escape, except out the mares gate. Jacob thought about making a dash for it. He'd rather take his chances with a wild mustang than the news reporters. Just as he was about to run, They heard a voice shout behind them. Jacob was grateful as he caught sight of David.
"Leave them alone!" He yelled at them.
"Sir, what is your opinion on the att..." One began, but David cut her off.
"I saw it happen, and everything you people are saying is bullcrap. Now i'd appreciate it if you didn't attack my children and their friends with your stupid questions!" He said. Jacob could see the fury in his step fathers eyes.
"You are the father of James Maxwell?" One asked. David looked extremely irritated.
"Yes! Now leave!" He shouted. They all scrambled out, still snapping pictures of them all. Just as they left, Davids phone began to ring. He answered and glared at the wall as he hung up a few seconds later.
"They're at the house too. They have James cornered." he said bitterly.
