Chapter 39
"Mom? Dad?" Mil asked stepping quietly into their room. They were still asleep, so Mil walked over to David and tapped him lightly on the shoulder. He stirred and opened his eyes, looking up at her.
"You're not going to school today." He said sleepily. Mil smiled and nodded before running out of the room and too her brothers. James just smiled and ran back up stairs, taking off his clothes as he ran up the stairs and diving into his bed. Jacob and Mil smiled and laughed once he was gone.
"It is almost five twenty, why don't we get a head start on the animals?" Mil asked.
"Why? And skip an opertunity to sleep in?"
"No, and have more time to play in the snow after." She explained. It dawned on Jacob and he ran to fetch his coat and boots.
Mil and Jacob laboured through the snow that was growing deeper and deeper. When they reached the barn, they could hear the beelting of the goats, who they had moved the night before. David suspected it would snow deeper then it had that night, so they set up their makeshift pen inside the barn and moved them all in.
Mil and Jacob split up the jobs, so she broke ice in the water and refilled buckets while he gave all the animals hay. They would have to wait to do the cows until sun up because it was to dangerous for them to drive the truck up to the caw pasture in the snow. After they had finished, Jacob helped Mil milk the seven goats by washing their udders so they'd be clean, and taking the milk pails inside the house once she was done with one. They were finished by six thirty. They walked inside and kicked their snow covered boots off in the mud room before heading into the kitchen. Mil had just finished straining the last bucket of milk when Jewel came down stairs with Peaches.
"You're up early for a snow day." Jewel said.
"Well we finished feeding the animals, so you should thank us for using up our extra two hours to sleep in." Mil said as she put the jar of milk into the fridge. The three of them quickly ate breakfast as retrieved their boots and coats before running outside. Jewel fetched two sleds from the garage and handed both of them to her older siblings. They sleded for a good two hours on a fairly steep hill near their house, until they were soaks and cold. They trudged their way home and stored the sleds back in the garage.
Jacob ran upstairs to his room and got changed out of his sodden clothes and then went down the hall to Lucy's room. She was laying. on her back looking up at the mobile that had little cows and chucked and horses twirling around her head. Jacob leaned down and picked her up, changing her quickly and was about to leave the room, but she started to cry, looking back at her crib. He smiled when he noticed she was reaching out to a certain brown dog that had it's better days. He quickly grabbed it and she wrapped her little arms around Puppy, allowing Jacob to now leave the room with her.
The power was still out, so Jacob took Lucy into his room and set her on his bed. He went over to the window and looked down where he could see that the pastures where they let the horses play in were completely white. Not even a single footprint could be seen. It was a sight he would never get bored of, though it did hurt his eyes. He turned away when he phone began to vibrate in his pocket, so he fetched it out and answered the call.
"Hey." Brooks voice could be heard over the phone.
"Morning." He replied. James stirred in his bed, muttering about kids making racket, like he was dreaming about being a eighty year old man who was sick of children. Jacob smiled and picked up his sister, taking her out of the room and going down stairs.
"Thank goodness it's a snow day! I'm so glad I got to sleep in." Brook said.
"I didn't sleep in. Mil and Jewel took me sledding. I've missed out all these years!" He said smiling while he bounced Lucy around on his lap.
"You've never been sledding?" She asked gasping.
"Nope. Never seen snow I'm real life until last night either." He said. Brooks line was silent for a few moments while she comprehended what had said.
"Wow, I feel bad for you. I mean, snow has it's bad days and most of the time I hate the cold, but being deprived of snow would depress me." She said.
"Well if you've never seen it, you don't understand what your missing." He said. "It was mostly tropical storms down in Florida. Hid in the bath tub quite often."
"That's nice." She said sarcastically. He chuckled and stood, setting Lucy down in her swing.
"Yes, it is nice, isn't." He teased. He walked into the kitchen and quickly made Lucy a bottle while he and Brook bantered with each other over the phone. Five minutes after Lucy had finished her breakfast, Brook said she needed to go and ended the call. Mil stepped in the room and took Lucy to go play with her upstairs and Jacob pulled om his boots and his coat again, and ran out to the barn to se Chevy. His mare seemed to be glaring at the door that led outside, mad at the fact that it wasn't open.
"I can't let you out unless David says I can." Jacob said kissing her nose. He ran his fingers through her thick coat. He left her for a moment and returned with her brush bin and brushed her out and took her tail out of the braid that Jewel had put it in the day before. His little sister had just learned how to braid, so she was practicing on all the horses since Mil was refusing to let her braid her hair. Chevy seemed to be relieved to be rid of the braid because she swished her tail through the air once he had it undone, hitting him in the face. He glared at her and ran the comb through her tail before putting the supplies away and heading back inside, not knowing what else to do. He wasn't tired, but he went back up to his room, where James was sitting on his bed with his homework spread out before him.
"Is that the homework that was due today?" he asked. James nodded.
"Was going to do it during enrichment today, but we now have an extra day to do it, so might as well." He said. Jacob bit his lip and pulled out his own homework, seeing his brother's logic. James smirked at Jacob as he set his homework out on his bed. "You didn't do it either?" Jacob rolled his eyes.
"Who does homework in this century?" He scoffed. James laughed and then the two of them worked in silence. James was finishing up an essay when Lily called on his phone. Jacob and James both looked at it as it rang on his bedside table.
"You need to finish your homework, Jay." Jacob said. James snatched his phone.
"It's my girlfriend! You've already talked to yours today!" He said defensively before answering it and walking out of the room. Jacob rolled his eyes again and continued to work on his homework.
