Chapter 18

Luckily for the boys, they were feeling a lot better by Saturday, so Alex let them go fishing. James took his own fishing pole, while Jacob took the spare that David let him use. Mil was also invited, so she brought her own pole. They put them in the back of the truck with some live bait, and drove to Brooks farm. Jacob had never met her father, so he felt quite nervous as James pulled into the drive way. Lily and Daniella were already there and they were petting Brooks horse, Phantom while Brook brushed him out. Judging by the sweat and his tense muscles, She had just finished working with him. They hopped out of the truck and headed over too them.

"Hey." James said hugging the three girls. Jacob and Mil took their turns hugging them too, and Jacob gave Brook a light kiss before helping her put Phantom away. Just as he was hanging up his halter, a man walked in with a close cut beard a scraggly brown hair. He was wearing a camo shirt and wrangler's jeans with his boots peeking out under his pant legs. Mil smiled at him and hugged him tightly. If his sister was this friendly with him, he must be a good guy.

His eyes landed on Jacob and he smiled, holding out his hand.

"You must be Jacob." He said. Jacob nodded and shook his hand, making sure his grip wasn't to weak or to strong, he didn't want to seem like a whimp, and he also didn't want to seem over bearing. His thoughts were very mixed and confusing.

"Yes sir." He said.

"Call me Wes, son. So...I hear you're dating my Brook." His eye brows went up questioningly. Jacob nodded.

"Yes si...Wes." He said. Wes stared at him for a moment, as if assessing him. He broke out in a grin and turned to Brook.

"I like this one." He said slapping Jacob playfully on his shoulder. Brook blushed a bit and smiled.

"Can we go now, daddy?" She asked. He grinned.

"Fine, I'll stop embarrassing you in front of your friends." He said. She glared at him as he laughed. "Come on kids." The six of them all piled into the bed of Wes' truck and he drove down the road. Wes drove them too a part of the Truckee River that was only ten miles away, and they didn't drive on a single paved road to get there. It happened to Wes' prized fishing spot.

Jacob found fishing very fun. Everytime someone felt a tug on their line, they would all rush over and watch as they reeled the fish in and put it on the chain of fishes that they would divy up and take home. Once all seven of them reached their limit of five fish, they caught them for fun, releasing them back into the river once they caught them. It was sunset by the time Wes told them that they could be done, and they set their fishing poles down and played in the river until after dusk, while Wes took a nap on the bank. The six of them first only splashed around in the water, until they were soaked, then they didn't care anymore and they shoved each other under the water. They laughed and swam while the full moon rose. By the time it was midnight, they were finally ready to go home. Brook woke her dad and they all piled back into the bed of the truck, putting their fish in ice chests. they were soaked and cold, but they still talked and laughed on the ride back to Brooks house. The twins took their share of the rainbow trouts that were caught, and they climbed into their own truck. Mil was staying at Brooks house for a sleep over.

David woke up when got home and prasied their fish, helping them gut and debone the meat before storing it in the fridge for the next morning. He then told them to take a shower and headed to bed. The twins took their turns showering before getting into bed and falling fast asleep.

Jewel woke Jacob up the next morning by setting a rapidly growing Peaches on his face. He threw the kitten off him and Jewel smiled.

"Since you caught all that fish yesterday, we get to have trout for breakfast!" She squealed. James sat up and got out of bed.

"Okay, I'm up." He said pulling on his clothes.

"Is trout that good?" Jacob asked. He had almost vomited cleaning and gutting the fish yesterday, he didn't know if he would be able to eat the fish that morning if it tasted as bad as it smelled. But soon the wonderful aroma of grilled fish came upstairs and he kicked Jewel out of their room so he could get dressed. The twins raced down stairs, trying to be the first one to the table, Pushing and shoving at each other. Alex smiled as they raced in and sat down at the table. Everyone had rushed downstairs the second they smelt the fish. She placed a hand over her growing belly and placed the fish down on the table, watching as everyone fought to be the first to try it. It had always been a popular breakfast option in their family, although it was Jacobs first time trying it. The second he put it in his mouth, he looked like he was going to melt, or like he had just been given a puppy. the rest was devoured before he knew what hit it.

After the amazing meal, They headed out to do their chores. Since Rocky was now adobted. Jacob took on the responsibility of watering the goats in the morning. that gave him the oppertunity to watch as Joseph and Mil placed each one of the seven does in milk on the two milk stands and milk them out. Mil allowed him to try to milk one doe named Maggie, and he failed miserably. She simply laughed and showed him again until he finally grasped the concept and finished milking her out.

Brook came over that afternoon, and She and Jacob finally told David and Alex that they were dating. Alex simply smiled saying she already knew. That was a huge relief for Jacob.

They went riding that evening. Jacob called Ginny and asked if he fouls ride Gold Dust, which she practically begged him too. Brook had risen Phantom over, so Mil saddled up Coal, James saddled Mist, and Jacob saddled up Gold Dust. They road down a road that Jacob hadn't been down before, and they showed him a small pond that had occurred because of an old natural well that had overflowed. They stopped and let the horses drink out of the trough part since it was a watering hole meant for the range cattle. They then headed back and road around the cow pastures, looking at some of the water damage that had occurred, avoiding parts where the water had hit most so their horses wouldn't been knee deep in mud.

They headed back and Jacob kissed Brook goodbye and she left. Next week they were to start school.

It was the Saturday before they were suppose to return to school. The twins and Mil were invited to a before school dance at the Johnson's. As Jacob approached the barn, holding Brooks hand, he smiled.

"Are the Johnson's the only ones capable to throw barn parties in this valley, or do they just have a lot to celebrate?" Jacob asked. Brook giggled a bit.

"They have a lot to celebrate. it's been a good year." She said. He smiled and the two of them danced all night to celebrate their last few days of the Summer.

Can you tell I'm in the mood for trout? I love fishing, and rainbow trout is pretty much the only fish I will ever eat! The picture on the side is of them being grilled, and if you look closely you can see veggies tucked inside, which is an amazing idea! I've never thought of doing that! LOVE Y'ALL!
