04 - thunder
THE STARTLING SOUND of thunder pounded in the angry skies. Soundly sleeping on the air mattress Cearra had previously been "surfing" on, Lia fidgeted.
The thunder boomed through the silent walls, disrupting her peaceful slumber, her eyes shot open. The familiar loud sound had set her breathing to a fast pace, goosebumps rose on her skin and her eyes looked left and right with fear seeping through them as if searching for something to comfort her.
The ebony haired girl got up from her bed with cold feet, rubbing her arms to create the slightest touch of warmth. With a dry throat, she decided for a glass of water as she headed for the kitchen downstairs.A split second of light had illuminated into the room through a nearby window.
Lia stopped and stood still midway, holding her breath for the dread which she knew was waiting to come. First comes the light then comes the-
The loud sound had filled the skies once again, and Lia covered her ears with the palms of her hands dropping on her knees wth agony as it all came flashing back to her. Her heart raced with the panic rising in her.
Her mind was set on a broken projector, flashing the scenes from the previous week in her head. The rain, the lighting, the THUNDER followed by a shrilling scream, and the screech of car ties. It was too much. IT WAS TOO MUCH. She let out her bottling distress in the form of incoherent sobs, she broke down just like she had in her bathroom two days ago.
Her hazel eyes searched Pedro's kitchen throughly, and instead of a glass if water, her eyes had landed on something more sinister.
She took in a deep breath, as she gulped through her dry throat. She felt the handle of the silver kitchen knife, the blade so sharp she could see her reflection on the metal. She saw herself. She saw a girl.
A girl who wasn't okay.
Until a few days ago, Lia was fine, all was normal. But now, she wasn't even sure of her mental state anymore. She saw herself a broken glass, shattered to minuscule tiny fragments, nobody dared to comfort her for in fear of getting cut by her shards. So she stayed broken.
She wasn't okay, she'll never be okay.
"Don't even think about" The tempting kitchen knife was then swiftly slapped out of her trembling hands. Lia spun around to face a groggy Cearra, her sleeping mask lifted above her eyes as she displayed a mop of short messy curls.
Despite her sleepy face, Cearra's onyx eyes shot like daggers. Her eyes stared at the depressed girl, not angry, but spilling waves of disappointment. Her shoulders drooped at the sight of the fragile girl with puffy eyes "Sweetie.."
"I-I.." Lia stuttered, unable to comprehend how to explain her actions. It was just in the moment, she saw it lying there, so tempting and sharp. She should have known better. The girl stared down at her feet in shame as she sniffed her runny nose.
"I didn't-" Another thunderbolt had boomed outside, startling Lia and making her scream in terror as she covered her ears with her cold palms. Cearra immediately came to her comfort, rubbing her back as she mumbled soft words of comfort.
"Don't cry, goodness it's only thunder" Cearra said with a soft voice, pulling the petite girl into her arms.
"I-It's n-not that" Lia explained, pulling away as she rubbed her puffy eyes. Cearra blinked absent minded, waiting for a follow up statement.
Wiping away the tears that trailed down her lush pink cheeks, the girl looked through an intricate vintage window studying the scene. The sky was angry and an unappealing shade of gray, every few second or so a flash of light would illuminate the outlines of the clouds and they cried rain drops like noisy waterfalls onto the streets.
But even though the sky was gray and black, Lia could just barely spot the luminescence of the moon hidden between the clouds
It was a half moon. Just like a few nights ago. Just like that night.
"I lost someone special to me on a night like this, I remember the thunder from that night like a recorded clip in my head"
"That night, I lost her and it was all my fault" Lia placed a hand on the cold glass, positioning it over the half moon
"all my freaking fault" She burst into despair again as she cupped her mouth with her hand, as if somehow trying to stop the overwhelming emotion. The hand on the window formed into a fist as she tried to punch the glass.
Cearra stood a few feet away from her, in compete oblivion of what to do. She was never good with dealing pessimism. She was used to being surrounded by soulless eyes, having literally lived at hospital for more than four years. But the bubbly girl never really understood how depression would consume a person's mind from the inside out.
She glanced outside to see that the downpour had finally calmed down.
"Come with me"
She grabbed Lia's hand on impulse, dragging her up to their room and leading her to another set of stairs. Cearra pushed open the glass doors and opened the way to the rooftop. Lia stood, confused as she hugged herself to shield her from the cold wisps of wind. They sat down on the roof, of the bakery watching the quiet Colombian roads, only lit by the street lamps.
"Look up darling" Cearra smiled, tilting her head up as her eyes darted for the scene above.
Lia awed as she saw the sky enveloped in black, decorated with a blanket of numerous stars, twinkling in patterns as if almost trying to communicate with each other.
"We're all looking at the same sky," the freckled face whispered, pulled into the scenery as she then pointed at the half moon luminescing in the sky "you know, I think all of us relate to the moon"
"How so?" Lia asked, her voice slightly weak
"We all have a a dark side, and a bright one too" Cearra answered "Our dark side is the fear that we choose to hide and keep in the dark, but the bright side is still bruised and scarred by the asteroids the universe
throws at us"
"But despite all that, the moon still shines in the darkness" She turned to face Lia as her lips stretched into a heart warming smile. "Don't you agree?"
Lia thought a lot about Cearra's words, she didn't know why the sudden philosophy had bloomed in the chestnut haired girl, but she wasn't complaining.
"Sure, I guess"
It was at that moment that moment Lia realised something. Sure, she was still a broken glass, but Cearra wasn't afraid to get cut by her shards to comfort her. Maybe Cearra couldn't glue her broken mind together, but she could paint them with her colourful words and create the something decent.
They were the lunar celestial.
Cearra was the bright side, and she was the dark. The dark that was being pulled into the light.
"Take these" Cearra's excited words had broke Lia out of her pondering. She looked to see the curly haired girl, handing her a lantern and and a sharpie.
"What's this?" She asked, taking the white lantern and marker in her hand. She noticed Cearra had the same items in her hand.
"write down all your fears, everything that makes your skin crawl, and that you wish could have been better" Cearra explained popping off the cap of her sharpie and placed it in between her teeth as she started scribbling.
Lia grew uneasy, she watched the girl beside her jotting down things like 'spiders' and 'moldy cake'. Lia paused for a moment as she began to contemplate the huge list in her head. She pulled the cap off her sharpie and began to write hesitantly.
She smudged the black ink onto the white material of the lantern, listing fear by fear, sorrow by sorrow, regret by regret. A certain name had found it's way recurring throughout her writing. Her hand sped faster and didn't stop till it cramped, and the ink refused to show again.
She let out a breath she wasn't aware she was holding, as she finished with a final full-stop.
"and now we light them" Cearra exclaimed.
A small flame was lit, illuminating the now self custom lanterns. They both each others eyes, their faces hued warm with the orange flame.
"Ready?" Cearra grinned
"As I'll ever be" Lia nodded
"Okay, three..two..one.."
Simultaneously, they let go of their lanterns and watched as the two sources of light flew higher and higher to join the stars.
"Letting go of your fears is the hardest thing, but it's an obstacle that holds you back from truly living" Cearra whispered, in the quiet atmosphere of the city.
"Let them descend into the heavens," Her onyx eyes glimmered under the stars as she talked "as light." Cearra finished in satisfaction as she watched the two dots of light disappear into into pitch black.
"Right Lia?"
"Lia?"
She was then met by soft snores, and found Lia soundly asleep on her shoulder. Cearra just giggled.
"Cute"
