The First Great Battle Part 1

A/N: and we are back with another short story! Although, I'm gonna go ahead and warn you guys about something, this is going to be a lot different than the other spidey fic stories I've done. How so? This is going to be a prequel to the first story, in other words, what life for Beca was like before she met Chloe. So there may not be to many bechloe moments in this, but I promise there will be some. This is basically just a neat little in-depth look at Beca's "spidey origins" and what her life was like before she went to NYU.

At this time, Beca Mitchell has not been the Spider-Woman for very long, almost a year at most. She is currently at the beginning of her senior year of high school along with her best friends, Jesse and Fat Amy. When she's not studying or saving the day, she's working with Jesse for the very man he had hoped to snag her along with, Doctor Curtis Connors. Though Beca wasn't a big science wiz, everything she learned from Jesse and his family, as well as Jesse's help with her job, has managed for her to do pretty well. Not to mention, Dr. Connors has a very generous paycheck for his assistants, which was enough to keep beca's father off her back about having a good job. Also, though she's been Spider-Woman for several months now, she was still learning the ropes if being a teenager and a superhero all at once, and that proved to be quite the challenge.

As they walked to their table with their lunch trays, Jesse and Amy were getting onto Beca about keeping her job with Connors. She had been late a few times and he threatened to fire her if she was late again. She had already given up on her other hobbies like photography and making time for being a dj or even being with her friends, she needed to stabilize more. "I'm just saying becs, you gotta learn to divide ur time better. I mean, don't get me wrong, I know how much saving the city means to you, but you can't just do that twenty-four seven or you'll go crazy" he stated as they sat at their table, Beca on one side and the other two sitting across from her.

"He has a point Beca, I mean you haven't really had time to hang out with us outside of school or work either" the Australian followed. "Or even Gwen at that matter"

"*sighs* I know, I know and I'm sorry. It's just every minute, I feel like there's someone who needs me or somewhere I need to be, that kinda thing" she stated.

"We know Beca, but you can't save everyone all at once" Amy shrugged. "Your Spider-Woman, not Superwoman"

"Besides, we miss you" Jesse added. "And I know for a fact Gwen misses having her pal around" and he was right too. Beca and her high school crush, Gwen Stacy, have grown very close over the past couple of years. Sadly, Gwen wasn't attracted to girls, but she proved to be a great friend to Beca when needed the most, even being there when Beca lost her mom, and the brunette did everything she could to return the favor. Last year at homecoming, when neither of them could get a date, they decided to go together and had a terrifically fun night. Their relationship would never be romantic, but it was special nonetheless.

"I know, ur right" Beca sighed. "I'll try guys, I promise" she assured and received thankful and positive comments from her friends in return.

"Speaking of 'saving the day'," Jesse changing the subject. "We need to talk about upgrades to ur suit"

"Yes! Please do, cos lord knows we need em" and Beca wasn't kidding either. Her current outfit was good, but was a little silly and could definitely use improvements. It was a red and blue hoodie with a spider logo in the center with blue sweat pants, red boots, leather gloves and a red skee mask with funny looking goggles. It could've been worse, but for a superhero? It can still be a hell of a lot better.

"Well I've been working on something for a little over a weak now and it's looking real kick ass" Amy stated. "It's a lot more suitable for a superhero" she proudly grinned.

"Like what, skin-tight spandex" she chuckled and took a bite of her lunch. But when she looked back up, Jesse and Amy's expressions were very different. "Wha-oh hell no, Amy!"

"Look, I know it's a little stupid" Amy raised her hands in a calming manor. "But it'll stand out more and will help you to swing around better" she reasoned, but Beca looked as if she was about to pounce over the table and lay waste to the Australian. "Look, just let me finish it, give it a look and a test run maybe, and if you don't like it, than I'll sell it on eBay or something. But I think your gonna love it" she seemed very confident about the matter.

Before Beca could even reply, someone came up and tapped her on the shoulder. "Yo Mitchell"

"Hey Flash, what's up?" she nodded as she turned to look up at the tall boy.

"Hey sorry if I'm intruding, but can you help me out this Saturday?" he nervously asked. "I wanna make my girl a mix for her birthday and I can give you twenty bucks for ur help" he sheepishly explained.

"Yea I can do that" Beca nodded.

"Sweetness" he grinned as he gave the dj a fist bumb.

"Nice shirt by the way" she acknowledged, now noticing the red shirt with the spider logo that was half hidden under the hoodie.

"Yea, well chicks dig em, or is he a she?" he furrowed his brow, that was still being called into question. At first everyone thought Spidey was a man, but then people who encountered her said a woman. Since she wore a hoodie, it wasn't easy to tell.

"She, trust me" Beca stated firmly, tryna hold back her contempt for the confusion.

"Ah, what the hell" he shrugged before turning to leave. "Catch you guys later!" he waved to the trio and received "bye"s and waves in return.

"I still can't believe you two are actually friends" Amy shook her head with a slight smirk.

"Hey, the guy lost his father at a young age and lost his head for a while. If anyone can sympathize, it's me" Beca explained, Jesse and Amy gave each other understanding looks in response.

"How is ur dad?" Jesse broke the silence.

"He...met someone" she slightly grimaced, averting her gaze.

The other two gave each other the "uh oh" looks before Jesse cautiously responded. "And ur not sure if ur ready for that?" he only received a small look and a shake of the head from the brunette in response. He reached across the table and grabbed the dj's hand, knowing what she was going through from having lost his own mother years ago. "Trust me, you'll get there, it's just gonna take some time" he sweetly assured.

"Thanx Jess" she squeezed his hand in return and gave him a weak but sweet smile for his encouragement.

"You tell ur dad about staying in New York?" he asked after pulling his hand back, hoping to change the subject.

"Yea" she sighed again, this time looking more frustrated. "Well, as you guys know, he wanted me to get out and see the world, but...you also know I can't leave New York, for a long list of reasons" she explained and they nodded along. "Well my options were either that or get a free college education at N.Y.U"

"Your dad's campus?" Amy furrowed her brow.

"Yea, *long sigh* I mean I know he just wants the best future for me, but I already have my future planned. I don't wanna...go to a college with a bunch of strangers and take courses that I doubt will be any appealing to me or just-I don't know it just seems stupid" she rapidly shook her head outta frustration.

"Well, why don't you just give it a shot" Fat Amy suggested. "I hear it's an experience worth trying out, give you something else to look forward to and maybe even offer something new to your life" she tried to convince her friend to stick with it, but she still didn't seem up to it.

"I'll...think about it I guess" she shrugged. "What about ur dad Jess? How's he doing?" now she was changing the subject.

"He's back in the hospital" he sighed.

"Again?" Beca was shocked.

"Jeez, what does he have?" Amy asked in the same state.

"Some weird disease that's making him not feel well" he shrugged.

"Well I hope he gets better" Beca kindly gestured.

"Thanx" the boy smiled.

"And who knows," Amy chimed in. "Maybe this'll get him to do a little better as a dad rather than a business man"

"Oh come on guys, he could've been worse" he countered.

"Yea, he could've been the male version of Amy" the dj smirked mischievously, receiving narrowed eyes from the blonde and a couple of carrots to the face.

Later that day, the trio was walking to their lockers and packing up their belongings now that school was out. Jesse had tried to ask this one girl out but was badly rejected, little to the surprise of his compadres. "Osborn, you know we love you, but you have the bitchiest of bitchiest crushes" Beca stated.

"Well I had this one that was pretty cool, but she turned out to be gay" he raised an eyebrow, beca narrowing her eyes at him in return. "Not holding it against you of course, just messing with you" he chuckled. "It's just hard for someone like me to find a real girl these days"

"Hey, I'm a real girl" fat amy stated as she held out her arms, pretending to look cool.

"Oh really, you wanna go out and give it a shot" he raised his brow.

"Yea you wish you get these rich boy" she mocked, clutching her breast.

"Eat me Aussie" he shot back with a very special finger lifted.

"Alright you two, let's go, we don't wanna be late again" Beca laughed as she shut her locker and began to escort her friends down the hall. "Don't worry Jess, you'll get a good girl, as long as she doesn't kill you first" he jokingly assured, the boy lightly nudging her with his elbow.

"By the way, what're you guys working on with the doc?" Amy asked.

"Reptiles basically" Jesse replied. "He wants to see if we can transfer a reptile's ability to regenerate it's limbs into other species"

"Wha-because of his arm?" Amy asked.

"Yea, I feel kinda sorry for the guy, he's real driven by it" Beca stated.

"Do you think it can even be done?"

"Well we're gonna see" Jesse replied. "A couple of days ago, me and little miss 'I'm not a science nerd over here' came up with an algorithm that might be what he's been looking for and we're gonna test it today" he happily stated as they got down the stairs and headed for Jesse's limo.

"That's awesome guys" Amy cheered, making the two blush a little. "You two are like-"

"Hey guys" she was cut off by Gwen Stacy as she approached the trio.

"Oh hey, uh guys, can you give is a minute?" beca excitedly and nervously asked.

"Sure, we'll be in the car" Jesse smirked as he and Amy left the two.

"Hey" she smiled nervously.

"Hey, I haven't seen you a lot outside of class lately, or even in class, ur not avoiding me are you?" Gwen jokingly accused.

"Oh no, just been very busy" she replied apologetically. "Sorry"

"Don't be sorry, I know ur busy, just miss hanging out with you is all" she smiled.

"I know, how bout tomorrow after I get off" Beca had thought about it since lunch and was really wanting to see her special friend again.

"Sounds great, I'll text you about when you do, ok?" she asked and the brunette nodded. "Awesome, I'll letchu go now, I don't want you to be late" she smiled, glancing back at the limo with Jesse and Amy.

"Again" Beca laughed and so did Gwen.

"Alright, I'll see you tomorrow" she gave her a thumbs up and a quick hug before parting ways.

"See you then" the dj smiled and then made her way back to her smiling friends. "I'm working on it" she nodded with a smug smile.

"Well your working good hot stuff" Amy patted her on the shoulder as she entered the vehicle.

"Ok, I always thought it was the other way around, but I guess not" Chloe stated as doctor Connors escorted her to her car outside his house.

"Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it" he smiled encouragingly.

"Alright, thanx doc, I'll see you on Monday" she cheerfully replied as she opened the car door and entered the vehicle.

"Alright, and you and Aubrey have a great performance tomorrow" he happily granted.

"Thankyou, bye" she smiled before shutting the door, starting the engine and driving off.

Just a few short seconds later, the English scientist spotted a limo pulling up and replacing the spot that was left by the ginger's car. The back door opened and out came the brunette and her best friend. "Ello Jesse, Miss Mitchell" he greeted, only using formalities for the brunette do to Jesse not liking the reference "Mr. Osborn" since that was mostly his dad's role. "Glad to see you could make it in time"

"Yea sorry about the previous times" Beca slightly grimaced from embarrassment.

"No worries, today looks to be promising and I very much look forward to what we accomplish today" he stated confidently.

Beca gave Jesse and nervous glance before responding. "Doc I know how much this means to you, but you do know that there's a chance this may not work right?" she nervously asked.

"I know Beca, but you should never stop attempting to do better. The day you do is the day your life ends, whether your still breathing or not" he proudly stated, not losing his confidence. "Shall we?"

"We shall" Jesse nodded and the three made their way into the house.

During their work, Connors had a virtual, holographic, test rat called Billy, who had an amputated leg and would be used to determine whether or not what the doctor's two assistants created would work. Connors had taken the algorithm that the two students put together and turned it into an actual syrum to insert into Billy's bloodstream and creating a computerized copycat of the syrum for it's testing purposes. Now that they had everything they needed set up right, all that was left was to do what they came to do.

"Deploy algorithm" the scientist ordered as they watched the holographic screen in the testing room.

"Deploying algorithm" Jesse noted as he carried out his task, inserting the syrum into the test rat. At first, the process failed, then Beca tried adding more to it and kept adding more each try. After about five tries, Connors was about ready to give it up. But then,

"Pending, Peptide algorithm accepted, Regrowth complete, vitals normal, blood pressure normal, limb regeneration successful" the virtual female voice announced, the trio scoffing in amazement and happiness and the scientist complimenting his two assistants and thanking them for their work.

But it was short lived, because now came the real thing. "Meet Fred and Wilma, our three-legged mice" he introduced the two little white mice in seperate containers before reaching in and taking one out. "Here you go" he placed the tiny piece of fur into the brunette's safe hands.

"Hey buddy, I got you" she sweetly soothed the frightened animal while making sure her hands were secure enough without crushing the tiny creature.

"Now be perfectly still, don't wanna stick you by mistake. Human trials aren't till next week" he joked as he inched the syringe closer to the mouse, the dj slighty laughing at the remark. "There" and with that, Beca carefully placed the poor mouse back in it's container.

"So what now?" Beca asked.

"Now you two get to go home, and tomorrow, we will see the kinda progress she's made" he replied, looking very satisfied with their work.

"You really think this is gonna work?" Beca nervously asked.

"I believe so, do you not think it's possible?"

"Doc, I think the possible and impossible rules changed when aliens fell out of the sky and fought a bunch of meta-humans a year and a half ago" Beca laughed and so did the doctor. "I just don't want you getting ur hopes up and coming up short"

"I understand, but Beca, hope is what keeps people going through the hardest of times, and it's also what keeps their sanity in tact during those times. It's something you wanna hold on to for as long as you live, does that make sense?" he stated.

"Yea, I think I do" she nodded with a small smile.

"Your a very brave and brilliant girl miss mitchell, I think if you keep pushing yourself the way you have, there really is no limit as to what you can accomplish" he greatly encouraged.

"Thankyou" she grinned.

"Anytime, I'll see you both tomorrow"

"Sounds good" Jesse cheered before the two students shook the scientist hand, receiving thankyou's and grateful compliments as they did, then exiting the large house. "Look at you, impressing the man like the genius you are" Jesse grinned as they walked down the stairs with his arm wrapped around her shoulders. "I think we should go into business together, we'd make a great team" now he was joking on the fact that she wasn't into science.

"Alright, don't push it Osborn" she playfully threatened, receiving a chuckle in return.

"You gonna go save the day now?"

"You know it"

"Alright, give em hell mitchell" he held up his fist for her to bumb and she did. "I'll see you tomorrow"

"See ya then bud"

X

The next day, Saturday afternoon, Beca received a text from Jesse, letting her know that his dad was coming home from the hospital and he needed to look out for him. She told him it was ok and she could handle one day with just her and the doc. She left a voicemail for Dr. Connors to let him know that Jesse couldn't make it and that she was on her way. She didn't expect much to happen today, considering yesterday's progress and hoped they wouldn't either. The sooner she could get done with this, the sooner she could go hang out with Gwen.

She arrived at the scientist house and didn't waste any time in charging up to the door. She knocked on the door, but there was no answer. She knocked again, but still nothing. So she turned the door nob, and much to her surprise, it opened. As soon as the door opened, she started to feel that familiar buzz in her head that let her know something was wrong. She cautiously made her way in the house, staying on full alert as she did.

"Doctor Connors?! It's Beca!" she called, but received no answer. She slowly continued her way down the hall, hoping he was ok no matter what happened. She peaked at each room she passed, seeing a bunch of trash and belongings all over the place. She made her way to the science lab, which was even messier than the rest of the house. Her eyes wandered around and landed on the small cages that held the two mice, but the cages were empty, torn up and had traces of blood on them.

Beca decided she saw enough and turned to leave, but was stopped by the very scientist she was looking for. "Woah! Doc? Oh my God, what did you do?" she gasped at the sight of him. His face was slightly covered with a green, scaly texture that reached down to his neck, and his eyes were yellow, it was far from a natural look.

"It's nothing, just side effects" he panted in response.

"Side effe-you didn't use it already, did you?" she rushed out the question, slightly panicked.

"What do you think" he replied and held up his right arm, Beca gasped at seeing it fully regenerated. "Remarkable, is it not?"

"But doc, look at ur face man, it's not worth it" she tried to reason with him. "You need some help"

"It's just a small miscalculation, it's science Beca, I can fix it" he reasoned back.

"Yea, I know a thing or two about freaky science and this kinda goes beyond a small miscalculation. Wha-what are you doing?" she asked when he started twitching and grunting.

"You need to leave...now" he nearly growled out while clutching the wall.

"No, we need to get you some help" she quickly stated, aiding the doctor. But then, he grabbed her arm and had a grip that was tighter than a guy like him would normally have, catching the brunette off guard.

"Ssstay...away Beca!" he growled again but even fiercer than last time. Now his eyes were a little more reptilian-like than before, his teeth and his claws were growing sharper. Beca didn't say anything else, just rushed past him and headed out the door. Luckily, she never went anywhere without her spidey suit, which was stuffed in her backpack.

She ran to the side of the house and immediately dug in her bag, hearing all sorts of growls, snarls and other weird noises as she rushed to get the suit on. The noises stopped before she could get it fully on, but she didn't hear anything like a bursting outta the house noise so she knew she was good. Whatever was going on in there, she had to keep in the house for everyone else's safety. She got everything she needed on and rushed back to the door, having not closed it when she rushed out, and jumped to the ceiling. As she crawled her way through, she noticed how much more destructive the house had gotten, like something big stormed through there.

She started to hear more noises, like something tumbling around the house. She followed the noises all the way back to the lab, and what she saw, having never personally encountered anything strange before, left her eyes buldging and jaw dropped. It was the strangest and most unbelievable sight she'd ever seen. Doctor Connors had turned into a giant, humanoid Lizard.

The Lizard, still wearing the white lab coat, turned and saw the wall crawler staring in horror. "Doc?" she asked in a state of confusion and fear.

"Beca? Spider-Woman, you shouldn't have come back!" he snarled before lunging at her. She was quick to dodge the attack and used every resource she had to gain the advantage. First by grabbing other objects with her webs and swinging them at him, then using her webs to blind him and her agility to attack and dodge him.

The fight eventually escalated to the living room where she continued to use the same tactics to beat the reptile, but it only worked for so long. He was able to smack her away and caused her to go flying into the wall before he pinned her against it with his giant hand. "Do not try to stop me Beca, I'm trying to create a better world, a world without sickness or weakness. I'm trying save it" he stated before Beca blinded him with her web, being released from his grip and used her webs to pull her out from under him. She then flipped up into a kick to the back of the head and sent it crashing through the wall.

Next she shot webs at large shelves with lots of equipment and other stuff on them and tugged them down, the monster growling and screeching as everything came crashing down on him, some of the chemicals even adding more damage. But it still wasn't enough. He pooped his head outta the wall and searched for his attacker, but she was nowhere near. He continued to look around and listen for the vigilante, he heard noises coming from the kitchen and snarled as he reached it in an instant.

But once he got there, he still couldn't find the masked savoir. But then, she rose from behind the island in the center of the kitchen. The Lizard was just about to make his move, until he caught a wif of what could've only been gas. Now he could hear the sizzling sound of the volatile substance shooting out of a pipe and another that brought his attention to the stove, which was turned on high. Then he turned he turned his attention back to the protector with the most horrified expression a creature like him could ever have.

"Bad lizard" she said before pouncing through the window, and was quickly followed by the explosion that consumed the entire lower left side of the house. The explosion left her with ringing ears and a bit of a headache, and the flames caught tiny bits of her suit, but she was quick to put em out and her ears and head returned to normal soon after. There weren't many times when Beca was grateful about the constant "movie-cations" that Jesse dragged her to, but this was one of em.

Now the only sound she could hear was the sound of a police siren coming from the street. At least that was the case, until...CRASH! Spidey could hear something burst outta the house and growl and thrash it's way to the police men. It seems that little trick of her's didn't quite get the jump done. She jumped to her feet and rushed to the street, she saw the Lizard attacking a squad car with two officers shooting at the beast. Their bullets seemed to have little effect on the creature as he grabbed one of the cops and was looking to bite his head off.

Spidey quickly dove into action, jumping on his back, wrapping a web around his neck and pulling as hard as she could. The cop in his grasp was immediately dropped and the lizard attempted to break free. "Doc, stop! This isn't you!" she pleaded as she struggled to keep her hold. He was able to wrap his seven-foot tail around her neck, squeezing to where she couldn't keep her grip before tossing her into the windshield of another oncoming police car.

She was able to come to in time to roll of the car and avoid the Lizard's pounce. She rushed back up for her next attack, only to be swatted away by the back of the animal's hand that sent her crashing into a tree. The two cops from the second squad car started firing off at the beast, only for one to have his weapon clawed away and the other to be smacked into the car by the lizard's tail. Spider-Woman cleared the cobwebs in her head in time to see the lizard rushing off. She made it back to her feet and charged after the animal, first leaping over the car and shooting a web to bring her up to the house that she saw him climb over.

Since there weren't any large buildings around he was much faster than she was. But all she had to do was follow the path of wreckage that the creature left behind him. The thing about the neighborhood that Connors lived in, it was right by the river that separated the town from Manhattan, and the path he left behind led right to a sewer tunnel that began right at the edge of the neighborhood. Beca crawled into the gigantic pipe to follow the monster underground, where he expected to go in this place was a mystery to her.

She continued to follow the straight forward path that the tunnel led to until she was stuck in the middle of an area that was surrounded by other pathways. She tried to look for any sign of where the creature could've gone, but to no avail. Since he currently wasn't around, she created a small, webbed platform to give her a good fighting stance in case he came back around, and that led down every tunnel so she would know where he comes from. Now all she could do was wait and hope for him to come back, but she wouldn't hafta wait long.

Suddenly, from right above her, the lizard pounced on her, the webbing supporting the both of them so they wouldn't fall. "I'm trying to cure the world of it's sickness, you will not stop me!" he snarled.

"I'm trying to help you doc" she barely managed to reply from the hold he had on her. "Ur gonna get urself killed"

"Only those who stand in the way will die, you included" he raised his hand with the intention to kill his assailant, the vigilante webbing his face again to stop him before kicking up and right into his jaw and then the face. When she rolled back into a fighting stance, he clawed at her again, catching her right across the torso and even raking the skin beneath it before pouncing her again. This time, the weight of the two finally caused the webbed material supporting them finally cave in and causing the two to collapse into the water below. Spidey was caught in a hard stream that swept her away faster than she could comprehend.

The lizard was quickly catching her, but luckily she made it through a stream hole that was just big enough for the stream to squeeze her through. The monster attempted to barge through or even reach for her, but made a poor attempt with bad conditions. Spidey feared that she would soon drown as she was continuously being thrown around by the currant. But her patience paid off as she was washed up to a drainage part of the sewers and gasped for air.

She slowly crawled outta the water, feeling completely warn out, covered in pain, out of breath and still very shocked at the events that had just occured. She was still tryna wrap her head around everything that had just happened, she never expected something like this would ever happen, just that she was gonna help her city in need. But it seemed that now her city needed her more than ever, she was gonna hafta step up her game. Now it wasn't just criminals and thugs she was fighting off, it was her first actual, real life supervillain.

A/N: Alright and there ya have it. I hope this is turning out well for all of you so far, please gimme some feedback if so, stay tuned for updates and have a nice day/night.
