How often do you ACTUALLY need to know state capitols?

My mom just told me I have a week to memorize all the capitols because she said "we're moving back and you need to know them"

But never have I ever heard of needing to know the capitols really unless you're doing something specific with geography, a politician, or taking the American citizenship test

They tried to make me memorize them in like 3rd and 5th grade but I'm REALLY bad at memorizing stuff so if I passed those quizzes I got lucky. 

I got lucky in my finals last week and nearly half of them were some sort of memorizing and presenting
