Friends

Sorry, not a chapter. Just a short story I did a little bit ago I wanted to share with you guys.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everyone always tells you how your life flashes before your eyes when you're in danger or close to death. Every book, movie and work of fiction always says the same happens when a character dies. I can't say the same for me. At least not completely. The days I spent with my closest friends flashed before my eyes, and that was it. There was no sappy moments with my family. No quarrels with ex-lovers. Nothing but the faces and voices of my closests friends. As I stood there frozen with fear, that's all I saw. All of the jokes that made me howl with laughter and double over. When they had brought me out of my darkest times. When they had saved me from myself.

I wasn't scared. I was far from it. Not happy, but not sad. As I stood there, reliving all of the happiest moments with my friends, all I could think about was how much they had affected me. They had helped me when no one else did. They understood me, more than anyone else. They always were there. I realized I had never thanked them enough. Never shown them how much they meant to me. I would always regret that.

Despite how much I yelled, how much I cried, they never left. Not once had they decided that I wasn't worth their time. And now, standing here, there was no way for me to repay them. Not anymore.

Still, the memories flashed. Over and over. Reminding me of them, and who they were to me. The smiles. The frowns. The jokes. I could never forget them. I never thought about leaving them. As their smiles filled my mind, I thought about what would happen once I was gone. Would they mourn? Would it hurt them? Would they forget me? I didn't want to hurt them. Not when they had helped me so much. But, there was no stopping it now. All I could do was pray that they knew I loved them.

The friends that were always there for me. The friends whose smiles never faltered. And the friends who gave me hope. I hope they knew I loved them. I hope they knew I cared for them more than anything. That I cared for them more than I had cared for anything. Ever.

Finally, their smiles appeared again. Filling me with happiness, and filling me with joy.

So, I smiled.

I smiled for them.

I smiled for me.

I smiled.

As the bullet found its way to my heart.
