Part 4 - Lift

Since I shouted at Khushi in class and told her in front of everyone that I wasn't her boyfriend, I had gone back to being invisible, I mean people only cared about my existence because they thought I was dating her and now that the rumors were cleared no one really cared once again.

I was the kind of a person who hated getting attentions anyway, I liked to be on my own without anyone really caring whether I existed or not so I liked that people stopped staring at me and whispering gossips about me whenever I passed by.

Apart from a few guys asking me if I was crazy doing something like that, everything else was back to the way it was before the encounter I had with her for the first time.

It had been two weeks since the incident, and since the day I had dropped her home, I mean I knew she was angry on me for some reason but I thought that maybe there were chances of her being friends with me, I guess I was stupid to think that.

Because since then I wasn't invisible to everyone else but Khushi too, she was back to being herself not caring I was around but I kept on noticing her every now and then just like I had always noticed her.

This huge crush I had on her since school days was something, it hadn't gone away until now and I don't know if it was ever going to go away because deep down I knew, Khushi was never going to even look at me let alone her being interested in me the way I was in her.

It was a busy morning, just after the first class, I had lots of notes to write so I was busy doing my work not caring what the rest of the students around me were doing until someone sat on the seat beside me.

Usually that seat was empty unless Rishabd and I had a class together, no one ever wanted to sit beside me and I don't know why so it was surprising that someone actually came to sit with me, at first I thought it might be Khushi because I did find her sitting here once but my doubts were cleared when I looked up.

"Hi." A beautiful girl smiled at me brightly as she placed her books on the desk and looked at me.

She had dirty blonde hair and a pair of really beautiful blue eyes, she was dressed in a short white dress, let me just sum it up in one word, she was beautiful.

"Hi." I replied as I concentrated on writing my notes, I mean yes she was beautiful, there were so many beautiful girls out there but I wasn't really interested in anyone because my eyes were always looking for the one girl I liked, Khushi.

"Can we be friends? I'm new here and you look like a great person." She smiled at me. She had a British accent, I loved British accent, it sounded so good.

"I'm the last person you want to be friends with, trust me." I said without looking at her, it was strange that a girl as beautiful as her wanted to be friends with me, why?

"I'm Nina, we just shifted from London a month back and now I'm here in Boston to study and now it's difficult to kind of have friends here because I don't really know anyone, I'd really like to be friends with you." She said as she smiled at me innocently.

"I'm Arnav, and fine we can be friends." I said finally turning to look at her, no wonder she had a British accent, she was from London, the place I wished to settle in the future.

I continued writing my notes while she kept on telling me her reasons for choosing to study here and stuff as I kept on listening to her and just nodding at everything she said, she was so talkative.

At Lunch time, Nina and I walked to the canteen to have lunch, I was showing her around the place and it was a huge campus so it was going to take time until she knew everything well, we got stares from a lot of people while walking, I mean I was always alone or with Rishabd so people were kind of surprised that I had a friend, but I thought I was invisible and no one cared.

"Wow, people really do stare." Nina said to me as we walked inside the canteen and settled down on table in the middle.

"I told you, I'm the last person you want to be friends with, people avoid me for reasons I don't know." I giggled.

"Well then I don't care what people think." She laughed as she looked around and then her eyes stopped at someone, I followed her gaze to look at the entrance, Khushi and her gang of followers hand just walked in.

"Let me guess, this are the popular girls, that one looks so pretty, is she Indian? She kind of looks like and doesn't look like at the same time." She asked as she pointed towards Khushi then turned her gaze back to me.

"Yes, popular, and yes she's Indian but she doesn't act Indian at all, I guess it's because she's grown up here, not that it's bad, I'm just saying." I said.

"Wow, you justify your sentences a lot." She laughed, she looked beautiful while laughing but I couldn't stare much at her because my eyes fell on Khushi again who was walking towards me, why though? Wasn't I invisible to her once again?

"Oh look, the nerd found a girlfriend." Khushi smirked as she stopped at the table and looked at Nina and I.

"I'm not his girlfriend, I'm just a friend." Nina clarified.

"I see, I was almost wondering how he got a girlfriend given that he's so rude." Khushi rolled her eyes and smirked at the same time.

"Excuse me, when was I ever rude, to you or anyone else?" I stood up and looked at her, seriously she's the meanest person I've ever met and she had the audacity to call me rude.

"The time you refused to do my homework and shouted to the rest of the class that I wasn't your girlfriend. No one has ever been that rude to me in my entire lifetime." She said to which I could see Nina giggle.

"That was honesty and if you find honesty rude, it's not my problem." I said as I sat down once again, she shrugged and walked away followed by her friends, I had never seen her with a constant friend, I mean she always had different friends every time I saw her.

*****

At the end of the day, I got into my car ready to leave as usual and just like the day when I dropped her home, she was standing at the gate, did she break up with another boyfriend of hers or what? Although I hadn't seen her with any guy apart from the one that she was kissing the same day I dropped her.

I rolled my window down and looked at her, she looked at me and then looked away pretending to ignore me, she was cute when she did such stuff.

"Need a lift?" I asked.

"Why is it that when I always need a lift you're the one to appear?" She rolled her eyes but then even with the attitude she was giving me, she walked to my car, opened the door and sat inside making me smile.

"And why are you smiling like an idiot?" She frowned looking at me.

"What happened today?" I asked as I started driving.

"My car broke down, and stop staring at me like that and smiling, it's creepy." She said, she made some weird faces like a kid, seriously this girl was something.

There wasn't much traffic today so the drive was pretty smooth, we only found a bit of traffic at the corner around her house.

"So that Nina girl, how did you two become friends?" She asked as I looked at the cars ahead of me waiting for them to move.

"She just came to sit next to me and asked if we could be friends, why?" I asked as I looked at her then back to the road, the cars were finally moving.

"Just asking, I like to keep information." She shrugged.

"Why would you want to keep information about me? I'm just an invisible nerd, and you don't give a damn about me anyway." I said, I hoped she would disagree because I really wanted for her to give a damn about me.

"Yeah you are right, I don't really give a damn about you." She agreed, and that sort of hurt. Come on, I was a human being and I had a crush on this girl since forever and she hadn't even noticed my existence until a few week ago, but when she did I kind of had hopes, hopes that were never going to be fulfilled but still I couldn't stop hoping.

"Do you like her?" She asked, I pressed on the brake putting the car into a halt immediately, gladly it was just outside her house, but she surprised me with such a question.

"Why would you think that?" I looked at her in surprise, I mean I had just met Nina today, how was it even possible to like her, of course she looked like a good person and she was my friend now so I liked her that way but not the way Khushi was thinking.

"Why can't you just answer a question instead of asking a question based on my question?" She rolled her eyes at me.

"She's my friend obviously I like her, but not in the way you're thinking." I answered.

"Okay great." She said as she unbuckled the seat belt and stepped out of the car, she was behaving really strange, I mean why was she really interested in my life all over a sudden?

"Why did you ask the question?" I asked her once again hoping she would answer but Khushi was Khushi, she always did what she wanted.

"Because I felt like asking, now go away and stop asking me questions." She said as she headed inside the gate, she dint even thank me, wasn't this girl taught manners or what?
