Chapter 6

Rossi and JJ came out of the church and they headed to the police station.

"There's no evidence that any of the local kids were into devil worship or the occult," Derek said.

"No, this is not a group of teenagers," Emily agreed.

"Unless they stumbled on the body and thought it'd be funny," Gwen suggested, "It's been known to happen."

"It's definitely a serial killer," Derek said.

"And considering what he did with her fingers, a sadistic one," Emily added.

"That, I wouldn't say just yet," Rossi told her.

"Why?" Gwen asked.

"Gwen's right," Emily said, "He cut off her fingers and he made her eat them. If that isn't sadistic..."

"If it was, that's the only sign of sadism present in the crime," Rossi noted.

"If he was purely a sadist there would have been more signs of torture."

"The fingers are a message."

"What the hell's the message?" Derek asked as Hotch entered the room.

"She's not my first. None of the fingers found in Abby Kelton's stomach were hers and six of them were index fingers," Hotch said.

Gwen felt her stomach turn. She stood up and left the conference room, stepping outside for some air.

"Hey, you okay?" Spencer asked her.

"I'm fine. Just a bit lightheaded is all."

"Your blood sugar is probably low." He checked his watch. "There should be some place open for lunch."

They walked around the town until they found a diner. They sat down at a table and a waitress walked up.

"What can I get you to drink?" she asked.

"Water," Spencer answered.

"Sweet tea," Gwen told her.

The waitress came back with their drinks and Spencer ordered a sandwich while Gwen ordered a salad.

"A sandwich would help with your blood sugar," Spencer said.

"I'm vegetarian."

"For dietary reasons?"

Gwen shook her head. "Having Rossi for a father...let's just say I've seen way too many cannibals to ever be able to eat meat again."

Towards the end of their meal, Spencer's phone rang. "Hey Hotch. Uh yeah. We'll be right there." Spencer hung up and grabbed his bag. "Hotch is ready for the profile briefing."

"Okay. Let me just pay and we'll go."

"You're not paying."

Gwen looked at him and raised an eyebrow.

Spencer blushed. "I just meant...please let me pay."

"You don't have to pay for everything, Spencer. I have money."

"I know. It's just...it's the chivalrous thing to do."

"You're mama taught you well, didn't she?" Gwen asked, winking.

Spencer quickly paid and they left.

After the briefing, they found out another girl went missing so the locals decided to set up a search for her.

Gwen wasn't allowed to search, so she was put with Emily and JJ at the sign up table.

"So, looks like things are getting pretty serious between you and Reid, huh?" Emily asked. She spoke quietly, since Spencer was standing a few feet away.

Gwen blushed. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Come on. You stormed out of the conference room and Reid went after you. Then you two disappeared for an hour and a half."

"I was feeling lightheaded, so we went to get some lunch. Nothing happened."

"Who paid?" JJ asked.

"Spencer," Gwen answered, "But he was just being a gentleman. It doesn't mean anything. We're just friends. That's it."

Emily shared a look with JJ. During the search, another woman went missing.

"This is why I didn't want you searching," Rossi told Gwen.

Gwen threw herself down in a chair. "I just feel so useless!"

Rossi patted her shoulder.

Gwen rubbed at her face.

"Get some rest. Reid!"

Spencer looked up from what he was doing and Rossi tossed him some keys.

"Make sure she gets to the hotel."

Spencer nodded and escorted Gwen to the hotel and her room.

"I don't know how he expects me to sleep."

"Just try at least."

"I guess there's no chance of inviting you in?" Gwen asked.

Spencer blushed and started to stutter when Gwen laughed.

"I was kidding, Spence. Calm down." Gwen leaned up and kissed Spencer on the cheek. "Goodnight Spencer."

"Bouna notte, Gwen."

When Gwen woke up in the morning, she had a text from Spencer. She smiled, but it quickly vanished when she read it.

Remember how you said you're vegetarian?

Spencer swung by and picked her up. "You okay?" he asked her.

"Feel a bit sick."

He handed her a granola bar and a Sprite. "Thanks. I'm guessing you got him?"

"Yeah."

Gwen reached over and grabbed one of Spencer's hands off the wheel.

"Gwen..." But Spencer stopped himself when he saw the look on her face. He understood why she'd grabbed his hand now. She needed something to ground herself in reality.

His hand tightened on hers. "You know, you still owe me that explanation of demon possession," he said.

Gwen smiled and launched into a rant, thankful for the distraction.

"Blaming the devil for his cannibalism wasn't enough to lessen his guilt, so he tricked others into participating. He made them all as guilty as he was," Rossi said, from where he sat across from Morgan and his daughter.

Gwen played with the chain of her necklace as she looked out the window. "Still don't think he was a sadist?"

"He caught every break possible, Rossi. Gets released from the hospital. His records get destroyed. Gets pulled over with a victim in the trunk of his car, and they let him go. I've never seen anyone that lucky," Morgan said.

"What's your point?" Rossi asked.

"You been doin' this a long time. You've seen a lot of things. You think it's possible that Feylinn would...I don't know. That he was gettin' some kind of help from somethin' else?"

"It's irrelevant. The job is to find evil, to stop it, not to know where it came from. Let somebody else take that job. This one's tough enough. You know...Reid was right."

"About?"

"If you believe in one, you have to believe in the other."

Gwen shifted so her head was laying on Morgan's shoulder.

"You told him, didn't you?" Rossi asked.

"I had to, papa," Gwen said.

"I'd never betray her trust, Rossi," Morgan reassured him.

"I know."
