Chapter 5

Gwen sat next to Spencer on the plane, both of them secretly looking forward to the trip because they would get spend time together.

"We never found any evidence of a killer Satanic cult," Rossi said.

"Yeah, because they don't exist," Gwen added.

"I'm guessing you're the reason why Gwen is as weird as she is?" Morgan asked.

"Do you think I'm weird?" Gwen asked Spencer, quietly.

"I like it," he told her, causing her to blush slightly.

"In reality, there are only 2 types of violent Satanic criminals..." Rossi started.

"Uh, type one, teen Satanists assume the Satanic identity to rebel. Minor crimes, theft and vandalism to churches, schools, symbols of authority. When combined with drugs and alcohol, they may turn violent," Spencer rambled.

"Yes, in extreme cases, deadly. That was out of my book word for word."

"Oh, trust us, we know," Morgan said.

Spencer continued. "Killings are accidental, usually resulting from their hobby getting out of control. Killings won't turn serial..."

"Hey, Reid." Morgan glanced at Rossi and made a cutting motion across his throat.

Spencer looked at Rossi. "Sorry."

Gwen leaned in closer to him and put her hand on his knee.

"Ok. So that's one type," Emily said, breaking the awkward silence, "What's type 2?" Emily directed the question to Rossi. "The adaptive Satanist is the one you have to worry about. The typical serial killer rationalizing his fantasies by them on outside forces."

"The Devil Made Me Do It," Gwen said.

"Exactly, Principessa. He adapts his Satanic beliefs to fit his specific homicidal drives. He doesn't kill because he believes in Satan. He believes in Satan, because he kills."

"Well, let's hope it's the teenagers," Hotch said, "Whether you're religious or not, the presence of Satanic elements can affect even the most experienced investigators. And we're not immune, so keep an eye on the locals, and keep an eye on each other."

"I hear you. The saw The Exorcist," JJ said.

"The Exorcist was just a movie. Demonic possession is nothing like that. There's no..." Rossi cleared his throat and Gwen stopped talking. Gwen pouted slightly and Spencer bumped her shoulder with his.

"Tell me about that later?" he asked and Gwen nodded.

"My mother took us to church every Sunday until I moved out. This whole Devil thing doesn't spook me at all," Morgan told them.

"Maybe that's because you never truly bought the God part either," Spencer said.

Morgan looked over at Spencer. "No offense, kid, but you don't know what I believe."

"Well, I mean, logic dictates that if you believe in the one, you have to reconcile the existence of the other."

"People's reactions to Satan is what gives it appeal to these offenders," Hotch told them, "It has power and it would be a mistake to underestimate it."

"Remind me to never debate religion with you. I think you'd win," Gwen told Spencer, causing him to laugh quietly.

When they arrived, Spencer, Emily, and Hotch went to M.E.'s office, while Gwen went with her father, JJ, and Morgan.

They pulled up to a church.

When they got out of the SUV, Rossi grabbed Gwen's arm. He pointed to the chain around her neck and said, "Keep that hidden."

Gwen nodded and they walked up to the church.

"Rossi, do me a favor," Morgan said, "You talk to the priest, all right?"

"You'd rather interview the grieving parents on the worst day of their lives than the priest?"

"If it's all right with you, yeah."

They entered the church and the priest greeted them. "Good afternoon," he said.

JJ shook his hand. "Hi. Father Marks. Agent Jareau. These are agents Rossi and Morgan," she introduced, "And our consultant Gwendolyn Rossi."

"Yeah. It's good of you to come."

"We're sorry we have to be here under these circumstances, Father," Rossi told him.

"Well Abbey's parents, Bob and Lee-Ann, are in my office. We were discussing her service."

"Agent Morgan actually has some questions for you."

"Well, uh, they're upstairs, first door on the right, and they're expecting you."

Rossi patted Gwen on the shoulder and followed JJ.

"So what? You here to look after me?" Morgan asked Gwen.

"Quite the opposite actually," she said, sitting down in a pew.

"So, how long has it been, Agent Morgan?" Father Marks asked him.

"I'm sorry?"

"Well, since you've been in God's house. Priests and dentists can spot an overdue customer a mile away, so... How long's it been?"

"I didn't come here to talk about myself."

"Occupational hazard. My apologies."

Gwen couldn't understand why Morgan was being so rude to Father Marks. He seemed like an okay guy, even though she wasn't fond of priests.

"Is this the biggest church in town?" Morgan asked.

"Well, we're the only church in Bridgewater Proper."

"You're aware of the religious aspects of this crime, the Pentagram?" Father Marks nodded.

"Yes, I am."

"Have there been any break-ins, thefts, threats towards the church?"

Father Marks shook his head. "No."

"Parishioners behaving strangely? Regulars who may have recently stopped coming?"

"Not that I'm aware of."

"How about questions about Satan? From your young members? Possession? Exorcisms? The occult?"

"Well, now, that, I'm sure I would remember."

"Good. Thanks for your time."

Morgan quickly walked out, Gwen following him. "Wow. Way to be an asshole, Morgan."

Morgan rounded on her. "You don't seriously believe all this shit, do you?"

"No. I don't as a matter of fact. I haven't been Catholic since high school, but you didn't have to be such a jerk to him."

Morgan sighed and ran a hand over his head. "It's just...all this..."

Gwen, against her father's wishes, pulled out her necklace and placed it in Morgan's hand.

It was a Pentagram.

"I bought this when I first graduated college."

"What? So you're a Satanist too?"

Gwen sighed and shook her head. "It's not inverted, see? The point is standing straight up. Each point on the star represents an element. Earth, air, fire, water. The point at the top stands for spirit. Reminding everyone that the divine is found within themselves. I don't believe in God, but I see the divine in everything. It's in the sky, the ground beneath our feet, the sun shining down on us right now. It's all around us."

"If you don't believe in God, what do you believe in?"

"That's the most wonderful part. Everything."

Morgan handed the necklace back to her. "Thank you."

Gwen smiled. "Anytime."
