It was the next morning, and the news about Casey Becker and Steve Orth hit the town like wildfire.
Nothing so tragic had happened to the town of Woodsboro except the death of Sidney and Sabrina's mother, Maureen Prescott, almost a year ago to the day.
Since the death of her mother, it's been hard for the Prescott girl to show her true emotions. So when the news got to her that her best friend was now dead, Sabrina didn't know what to feel; sadness, anger, both.
Sabrina quietly sat on the wooden table outside the school, surrounded by her fellow cheer team.
She could feel students and the press eyes burning into the side of her head as they watched the girl.
"I can't believe it." Sandy, one of the cheerleaders, spoke. "Who would do such a cruel thing?"
"Must be someone with a fucked up mind." Jessica replied. "I mean, who goes around and kills teens for fun?"
"The police think it's someone from our school." Laura explained, looking over at the group. "Who do you guys think did it?"
"I don't know, Steve pissed off a lot of people." Sandy said.
"Yeah, well, what about Casey's ex? What's his face?" Jessica suggested.
"Who, Stu Macher?" Laura questioned, causing Jessica to nod her head. "But why would he want to kill Casey?"
"Jealous." Jessica shrugged.
"Well, I know for a fact Casey cheated on Stu with Steve." Laura gossiped.
"What about him?" Sandy spoke, causing the other 2 to follow her gaze. "I heard he has a thing for horror flicks."
"The geek?" Jessica questioned.
Sabrina slowly looked over at the trio she was sitting with to follow their gaze to find it locked on Randy Meeks.
"What do you think, Sab? Do you think the geek did it?" Laura said, causing the other two to chuckle.
"Absolutely not. He wouldn't do anything like that. Also, it's really mean to go around accusing people of murder." Sabrina spoke firmly, quickly spotting her sister standing not too far away with Tatum. "I gotta go; I'll catch you guys later."
Before the trio had the chance to speak, the Prescott girl slung her bag over her shoulder before quickly walking away.
"What's up with her?" Jessica asked, looking over at the other two, causing both of them to shrug.
"Sidney." Sabrina called, causing the duo to go quiet as the younger of the twins approached. "Hey Tatum."
"Hey Sab, sorry about Casey." Tatum said, sending the girl a small smile.
"Yeah, thanks." Sabrina replied, looking down, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear.
"How are you holding up?" Sidney asked, causing Sabrina to look up at her sister.
"Fine." Sabrina spoke softly. "It's just all the staring and the gossip."
"You talking about Jessica and her little followers? They seem to know anything and everything about this town." Tatum spoke, rolling her eyes. "I'm surprised you're even friends with them."
"I'm not Casey is... was."
"Well, don't worry; I'm sure the boys wouldn't mind if you hung around." Tatum smiled, throwing her arm around the girl's shoulders, leading the Prescott twins into the school.
...
Sabrina sat in her usual seat in English class, only this time the seat to the left of her was empty where her friend Casey sat every day.
"Sidney, Sabrina." Mrs. Tate called, gaining the pair's attention. "It would appear to be your turn."
Sabrina looked to her right, locking eyes with Sid before the duo grabbed their things, quickly standing from their seats.
Sabrina gave the empty desk one last glance before following her sister out of the classroom.
The sisters silently made their way towards the principal's office.
Sabrina lifted her hand, giving two slight knocks on the door, gaining the three males standing around the room attention.
"Sidney, Sabrina. How are you girls feeling?" Principal Himbry asked, leading the girls into his office.
"Fine." The duo spoke together.
"Hi, girls." Sheriff Burke greeted, sending the girls a friendly smile.
"Sheriff Burke, Dewey." Sidney spoke, looking between the two men in uniform.
"Uh, that's Deputy Riley today, Sid. Same for you, Sab." Dewey informed, causing the girl to nod in understanding.
"So how is everything, Sidney?" Sheriff Burke questioned.
"Good." Sidney answered, shrugging her shoulders.
"And your dad? How's he doing?"
"We're fine. Thanks."
"How about you, Sabrina?"
"I've been better." Sabrina said, sending the man a fake smile.
"We're going to keep this brief, girls.' Principal Himbry explained. "The police just want to ask you a few questions. Okay?"
"Mm-hm."
"Sabrina I heard you were very close with Casey Becker." Sheriff Burke stated.
"Well, yeah. She was my best friend.".
"Hm. How about you, Sid, were you close with Casey Becker?"
"Not really, no. I mean, we spoke every once and while, but that was only because she was Sab's friend." Sidney explained.
"So you don't have anything you can tell us about her?" Dewey asked.
"Not that I can think of, no." Sidney shook her head.
"Well, you can go then. But we need to ask your sister a few more questions."
Sid shared a look with her sister before she slowly got up, leaving the principal's office.
"So, when was the last time you heard from Casey?" Sheriff Burke questioned, turning his full attention to the younger Prescott.
"Last night. She called me, like usual."
"And around what time was that?" Sheriff Burke asked.
"8:30, 9:00 maybe."
"What did you girls talk about?" Dewey questioned.
"Usual stuff. Cheer. School. Boys."
"Did she say anything unusual before she got off the phone?" Sheriff Burke asked.
"Well, there was one thing." Sabrina said, causing the three adults to sit up. "When we were on the phone, she got another call from some guy; she said it was the wrong number. But apparently he tried calling back."
"We'll look through phone records and see if we can track the number." Dewey spoke, causing Sheriff Burke to nod his head. "Is there anything else you can think of, Sab?"
"No, sorry."
"That's alright. If you think of anything, give us a call." Sheriff Burke said, giving the girl a smile before sending the girl on her way.
By the time she left the principal's office, it was already lunchtime, so she slowly made her way to the courtyard.
Sabrina glanced around, looking for the group of familiar faces, but was only met with stares and whispers, causing the girl to grow uncomfortable.
Finally, her eyes locked on her sister and her friends as they all sat in front of the water fountain, causing the girl to slowly approach them.
"Hey." Sabrina spoke, gaining all of their attention as they looked in her direction.
"You made it!" Tatum happily said, sending the girl a supportive smile.
"Hey, Stab." Stu joked as he sent the girl a smile, causing Tatum to hit him on the chest. "It was just a joke. Sabrina knows that. Right, Sab?"
"Right." Sabrina answered, sending the boy a small smile before she took the only open seat at the end of the fountain beside Randy.
"Hey, Sabrina. How are you doing?" Randy asked, sending the girl a smile.
"I'm fine."
It was the first real smile that had appeared on the girl's face all day.
"So what kind of questions did they ask you, Sid?" Tatum asked, glancing over at the Prescott girl in curiosity.
"That asked if I knew Casey." Sidney replied.
"Yeah, they asked me that too." Sab spoke up. "They also asked me when the last time I spoke to Casey was?"
"And what did you say?" Billy asked, staring over at the girl.
"The truth. That I had spoken to her last night on the phone around 9."
"Hey, did they ask if you like to hunt?" Stu questioned, causing the Prescott girl to raise her eyebrow.
"Yeah, they did." Billy responded, looking over at the Macher boy. "Did they ask you?"
All Stu did was nod in response.
"Hunt?" Tatum repeated, causing her boyfriend to nod. "Why would they ask you if you liked to hunt?"
"'Cause their bodies were gutted." Randy revealed, causing the blood in Sab's body to run cold.
"Thank you, Randy." Billy said, sarcastically.
"They didn't ask me if I liked to hunt." Tatum stated.
"It's because there's no way a girl could've killed 'em." Stu said.
"That's so sexist." Tatum scoffed. "The killer could easily be female. Basic instinct."
"That was an ice pick. Not exactly the same thing." Randy said.
"Yeah, Casey and Steve were completely hollowed out." Stu explained. "And the fact is, it takes a man to do something like that."
"Or a man's mentality."
"How do you... gut someone?" Sidney asked in a soft tone.
"You take a knife, and you slit 'em from the groin to sternum." Stu started, causing Sabrina to begin to feel nauseous.
"Hey, it's called tact, you fuck rag." Billy corrected.
"Hey, Stu, didn't you used to date Casey?" Sidney pointed out the boy's old romance with her sister's dead best friend.
"Yeah, for like two seconds."
"Before she dumped you for Steve." Randy interjected.
"I thought you dumped her for me." Tatum gasped.
"I did. He's full of shit." Stu glared at the Meeks boy.
"And are the police aware that you dated the victim?" Randy asked.
"Hey, what're you saying?" Stu questioned. "That I killed her?"
"I would certainly improve your high school Q."
"Stu was with me last night, okay?" Tatum informed the boy.
"Yeah, I was." Stu smirked.
"Ooh. Was that before or after he sliced and diced?" Randy asked.
"Fuck you, nutcase. Where were you last night?" Tatum snapped.
"Working, thank you."
"Oh, at the video store? I thought they fired your sorry ass." Tatum questioned.
"Twice." Randy smirked. "Don't believe me? Ask Sab; she stops in every Sunday and rents the same 2 movies: Halloween and Clueless."
"Well, I didn't kill anybody." Stu said.
"Nobody said you did." Billy spoke.
"Thanks, buddy."
"Besides, it takes a man to do something like that." Randy mocked the Macher boy.
"Yo, I'm gonna gut your ass in a second, kid." Stu threatened.
"Tell me something." Randy rose. "Did you really put her liver in the mailbox? 'Cause I heard that they found her liver in the mailbox next to her spleen and her pancreas."
The Prescott girl felt a sudden wave of nausea overcome her as she quickly shot to her feet.
"I think I'm going to be sick." Sabrina muttered before she rushed away.
"Sabrina, wait. I was only joking!" Randy called after the girl, but he was ignored.
Sidney quickly stood up from the fountain as she went rushing after her sister.
"Sab!"
"You better liver alone! Liver alone!" Stu laughed at his own joke, causing Billy to shove him. "Ow! Liver. Live- It was a joke."
