DOMINIC'S P.O.V
I woke after a couple of hours, and realised that my arm was around Hayley's waist, and her head was still on my shoulder. My first instinct was to rapidly remove my arm, and after I did, I remembered everything that happened last night.
What was wrong with me? Why was I being so open to someone who was annoying as hell, and why was I allowing her to know my weaknesses she could use against me in the future?
The answer to those questions came to me as fast as the questions did.
I had no idea.
I looked over at her and she was still asleep, and my hand almost without will, reached to push her hair away from her face, her eyes fluttering while she slept.
Clearing my throat, I slowly got up, putting her head gently on the bed. I saw her top on the floor, so I went in the bathroom to wash it for her seeing as though she had forgotten to do it herself last night.
My stomach then made a noise, and I realised we hadn't eaten in a day or so, therefore I looked back at her as she made a soft sigh in her sleep before closing the door behind me.
I shook the guy's hand who was at the counter downstairs and asked him if they did breakfast, and they did.
The only money we did have was from what was in the pocket of the uniform I borrowed from the dead guy, and we used that on the room. As I went to the car we also borrowed from the lovely couple who didn't protest when we did, I checked the dashboard and car doors to find 35 dollars in total and a couple of cents.
Hopefully it was enough for breakfast and a burner phone I knew the man at the counter was selling.
It was cool if there wasn't enough money for breakfast for two, as long as there was enough for the hungry gorilla Hayley would become if she didn't eat.
I'd gone a week without eating before, so I could manage a couple more days, it was okay.
I bought two doughnuts and a cup of hot chocolate, along with a bottle of water for myself with the remainder couple of cents I had left after the burner phone.
Walking back into the room, I saw that she was still asleep on the bed, and I put the things down on the side table before standing up, awkwardly scratching the back of my neck.
How was I going to wake her up? I wasn't a nice person, no matter how nice I tried to be I ended up messing it all up by saying something idiotic, and she hated me, and as much as I didn't want her to, I also did.
Whoever I got close to, I destroyed.
And whoever got close to me, destroyed me and themselves, so I put up the idiotic asshole wall around me so no one even bothered to talk to me properly.
I destroyed people, places, hearts, and that was why I was scared to get cllse to anyone.
I was a destroyer.
Which I was fine with.
And with Hayley, she annoyed me like hell, she did things I hated, but she made me laugh, and I needed to hide that she was affecting me. I couldn't get close to her, because if I did, I'd ruin us both.
"Hey ugly, wake up." I spoke, and she grunted like an animal, stretching her arms across the bed.
"Get up, you fat shit." I rolled my eyes with a smirk, knowing she'd have enough energy to remark something back.
"Shut up, Allistair." Hayley
I grinned "You're going to wish you didn't say that."
"Oh yeah?" She lifted her head slightly, eyes still closed, "Does it look like I care?" And then put her head back down.
See what I meant? She aggravated me, and she wasn't scared to say anything she wanted to me, didn't try to impress me, and I enjoyed it because we drove each other crazy.
"You will in a second." I walked upto the bed and flipped the mattress, tipping it and her off. She landed on the floor with a yelp, and then stood up after a couple of seconds, her fiery eyes burning holes right through me. Her brown mane was a mess, and her cheeks were a little pink.
"I... hate... you!" She breathed before making a run towards me, and I let out a deep chuckle as she lunged at me, and I held her by the waist, lifting her in the air.
She was tiny and I could lift her whole body with one hand, but the way she acted, fierce as a lion, not even a lioness, made people be intimidated by her - just not me.
I threw her onto the bed, and she gasped.
"My stitches, asshole!"
Shit. That was the thing with me, I didn't remember she was hurt, and I think she saw the way I looked because she then burst out laughing, and I just shook my head. What a faker.
She was something else.
I went over to the mattress-less bed and sat next to her, handing her the plate of doughnuts and the hot chocolate, taking the water myself.
Her eyes lit up when she saw what I got her, and she grinned from ear to ear, quickly putting her top over her head.
"God, I love you."
I looked away awkwardly, and cleared my throat.
"I was talking to the doughnuts." She added awkwardly, and I pushed her face slightly with my hand as she laughed at me.
We sat in silence as she was eating and making noises after every bite, and eventually I just glared at her.
"Can you eat with your mouth closed? It's rude."
She scooted closer to me, and I tensed as she leaned into my ear to say,
"Why? Does this bother you?" And she started chewing loudly, making all sorts of sounds with the half eaten doughnut inside her mouth.
I started laughing, and pushed her away, realising my shoulders went down when she moved.
"You, Hayley, are the most annoying person I have ever met."
"Tell me something I don't know." She cheekily smiled at me, and I tried so hard not to smile back at that face she made.
Her facial expressions were priceless, and the ugliest too, and she could never keep them to herself in weird situations, but this one made me want to grin.
What was going on with me?
"Where's yours?" She asked me, and I snapped out of my thoughts.
"Where's my what?"
She rolled her big brown eyes, "Your breakfast, idiot. And by the way, where did you get the money?"
Oh, okay.
I held up the bottle of water, " There were 35 dollars in the car we stole, and... I got a burner phone along with your stuff so, I got some water with what was left."
"Technically speaking, they gave the car to us, did you hear them complaining? I didn't." She shrugged with a smirk, and I raised an eyebrow at her, making her roll her eyes at me.
"Well," She looked like she was mentally fighting with herself before she offered me the other doughnut."I don't usually like to share, but here, you haven't eaten in like, two days."
"No, I'm good. You eat it, I don't want you complaining after." My voice came out bitterly when I spoke.
Crap, couldn't I have said that in a nicer way?
I wanted her to eat it, she was hungry.
This was me being considerate.
Hayley scrunched her nose, "Alright, no need to be a bitch about it."
I didn't mean to.
"I'm just a little stressed." I sighed.
"We both are, but the only way we're getting somewhere is if we don't bite each other’s heads off."
How did she manage to say things like that?
I was silent, and then she broke it.
"Hey, we'll figure something out. Now here, don't take it out on me, take it out on the doughnut. Last chance or I'm eating it."
I looked over at her, and then smiled, taking the doughnut.
"It does look quite nice." I eyed it, and she let out a laugh.
"Trust me, they'd taste better if you don't try to use those tough guy impressions on them."
*******
After we got our things together (not that we had much), Hayley tied her hair up with a pencil she found in the table drawer, and I just watched her as she effortlessly pushed the pen through, her hair not budging.
"Will that not fall?"
She then shook her head up and down a couple of times before making a surprised face.
"Not yet, nope."
"Well, with the amount of stunts you pull, it's bound to fall out." I shrugged and took out the burner phone from my pocket, ignoring her remark from behind, something about my backside.
Whatever she said, I was sure it was that my backside was ravishing, and I couldn't agree more.
"So, who you going to call? Ghostbusters?" She called, and I just turned to her, my face trying to compose itself.
I saw her biting her lip, trying not to burst out laughing, but when she saw the look on my face, she couldn't help it.
"Did you--" I began in disbelief, and then sighed, wiping my face in annoyance "Really? Where do you get these dead jokes from?"
She was giggling, and I couldn't keep it in myself, so I laughed along with her.
"They come naturally."
"Nah, I'm sure that's what you do in your free time, look up jokes."
She gasped dramatically, hand on chest. "What a pervert. Have you got cameras placed in my house? And I thought I was weird having a picture of my celebrity crushes on my phone."
"You are weird, Hayley. And the dramaticness. It stinks, I can smell it from here." I blinked, and she mimicked me, making weird faces.
"I can smell it from here, you can smell your hairy armpits, you dinosaur."
I raised my eyebrows, " Dinosaur? I have the cleanest armpits in this room. Wanna smell?" I took a step towards her and she leapt back, smacking her back against the wall.
"Please, spare me the torture."
I chuckled, and she then grinned, throwing a pillow at me.
"Oh, you didn't." I growled, before moving forward.
She put her arms in front of her as protection, and I picked up the pillow, ripping it in half and throwing all the wool stuffing over haead, her mouth hung open as I emptied it over her.
"You–" She began and then cackled "Dominic Hawke, you ruined the whole concept of a pillow fight!"
I smirked, "That's the fun part."
She threw her hands up in confusion before starting to take out the pieces from her hair, the disbelief still on her face.
"Alright" I sat on the wooden chair in the room, "I need to call Jared."
She perked up, "Ooh who's Jared? Is he fit? He sounds fit." It was almost like she was saying the last bit to herself, but I heard, and I bit my lip, trying not to laugh.
"He's my uncle. And he's 50."
I saw Hayley's face change, but then it went completely back to normal again.
"Age is just a number."
She couldn't ever back down, and couldn't admit defeat.
"That is disgusting. He's old!"
"Hey, Dom. Old is gold, kay?" She warned, and I cringed at that moment, and it looked like she did too, she was just defending herself.
"Okay, forget it. When we see him, I'll let him know you have a crush on him. Although I don't think Jimmy will be too pleased to hear you're hitting on his father instead of him."
"Who's Jimmy?" She grinned at me, and I just sighed, making her burst into giggles.
"I love making you jealous."
"Jealous? Why would I be jealous? You're unbelievable"
"But you love it." She moved her hips side to side, still getting rid of the stuffing from her area.
I scoffed, dialling the one number I had memorised four years ago, and I remembered his words, 'Your father never was, but I'm here for you, don't you forget that. And if you ever need me because of the hell you're currently working in, just call me.'
It rang a couple of times before he finally picked up.
"Hello."
"He's British?" Hayley mouthed at me smiling, and I rolled my eyes at her before saying Hi back.
"Hey, Jared. It's me, Dominic."
"My boy, Nick! How's it going, kid?" Jared sounded happy to hear from me, and part of me was relieved he was.
"Good, yeah. How about yourself?"
"Ah, kid, it's been ages. Your uncle's even got wrinkles on his–"
I quickly interrupted him before Hayley's jaw could drop to the ground, "Um, that's good well I'll probably get to see you."
Jared stopped talking, and after a couple of seconds, he seriously asked.
"Hey, Nick. Is everything alright? And why the fack are you and some brunette on the run from the Base and the... Why are you with a girl from the League?!"
Hayley looked nervouse, and I nodded at her, holding up a finger.
"See, Uncle Jared, the thing is..."
I told him everything that had happened previously, and when I finished, I saw Hayley fluttering her eyes at me, making sad faces.
I threw a rolled up tissue at her face, and she stuck her tongue out at me before sitting with her back against the wall, picking at her fingers.
She looked nervous, and I could tell by the way she was deep in thought, it was why I just wanted to hurry and get this call over and done with so she could know that we'd be good.
"Damn, son. I never liked Cole from the beginning, you were my favourite nephew."
Hayley just looked up, with a face that read 'That's seriously all he got from that?' But she also looked impressed, and I realised she was the exact same as Jared, never took things too seriously.
"So?" I asked, and Jared then sighed from the other side of the phone.
"I've got you, kids. Go to the nearest ATM machine, or whatever you call it there, and put in the pin 01469. You'll get a direct amount of however much money you need, and I'll send through passports and flight tickets for the both of you. You're coming to England. And hey, Nick. Be nice to Jonathan's daughter, I have a feeling I'll like her more than you. Try to be a gentleman, and tell her I said she'll be fine, not to worry."
Hayley looked surprised, shocked, upset and happy all at the same time, and I was surprised myself.
"Alright, thanks Jared. Thank you so much."
"See you in a while, Kiddo. Bye."
I turned the phone off, and turned to Hayley who was hugging her legs on the floor, her chin resting on them.
"He knew my dad." Was all she said to me, her eyes unreadable now, and I had no idea what to say or do.
I kneeled down in front of her so that we were at the same level, and I just looked at her vulnerable posture.
"Yeah, he did. Now come on, let's get out of this country. It's by far the worst experience ever."
She laughed, and then got up, nodding.
"Same. And hey, your Uncle Jared is so cool. He has access to all ATM machines?!"
"You'll be surprised to know what he has access to, come on."
We left the motel, and began driving to find the nearest town so we could search for a machine, and on the way, she turned on the radio.
Hayley was singing along to most of the songs that came on, and I recognised a few myself, but didn't do more than move my head to the beat, which she laughed at.
As we finally entered a city, I recognised it from the Queensland Museum we drove past, and I told Hayley we were in Brisbane.
"Wow, your bitch brother took us quite far didn't he? We were in Sydney, weren't we?"
"Yep." I agreed, and then we stopped outside Myer Centre, looking around.
We found a machine, and as I waited in the long queue for it due to it being the only one outside the centre, Hayley wandered off to help an old woman take her shopping bags to the cab, and I smiled to myself.
Entering 01469 into the machine, I looked around me as it processed, and I took out 3000 dollars, from which also the flight tickets and two passports came out.
My uncle was awesome.
A receipt also came out, and I looked at it confusingly as it read:
'You're paying me back, prick :) And hey, be nice.'
Chuckling, I went over to Hayley as she was talking to that old woman, and the woman smiled at me.
"You must be Hayley's friend, Allistair. A pleasure to meet you, child."
I smiled, moving forward to shake her hand, and glared through the smile at Hayley who seemed to be enjoying herself.
What shit had she been telling her?
"You know, her name is Fiona, she likes to tell people its Hayley because she doesn't really like it."
The woman widened her eyes. "Nonsense, that is a beautiful name. I was telling Hay- Fiona, that you remind me of my grandson. A very charming and handsome young man."
Hayley just laughed awkwardly, and I looked down for a second, before smiling at the woman.
"You're here alone?" I asked, and she nodded.
"Yes I am, my daughter had a baby today, so I thought I'd buy some things for the little one."
"Congratulations." I stated, and she stroked my arm affectionately.
"Thank you, child. Now, I'll be off, it was so nice meeting you both. I hope we meet again, but next time it'll be on your wedding." She laughed, and me and Hayley just looked at each other weirdly, which she saw.
"Hey, it might seem impossible for you both now, but all is possible, and you two would make devilish but adorable children."
What the hell?
Hayley looked like she'd be sick, and I felt like laughing and walking off before she called a vicar.
But I wasn't going to lie, what she said did bring butterflies to my stomach.
"Thank you, but we'll pass. I already have a boyfriend." Hayley smiled at her, and I just looked at Hayley with a smirk on my face, but she was too awkward to even look at me.
The woman waved her hand in the air, "Well I don't like him, whoever he is. He's not here with you right now, he's not as charming as Allistair is, and I ship the two of you.
Now you go tell the faggot that he can wee off, because this guy isn't a quitter, he'll stay til the end, I can just feel it. And if you're clever, you won't let the opportunity go by. See ya!"
She sat in the car and closed the door, the cab driving off and leaving us both staring after her in disbelief as she waved from the window at us.
"We'll make some adorable kids, eh?" I broke the silence with a laugh, and Hayley stormed off,
"Oh, shutup!" But I saw her smile before she did.
Flights to England departed that night, and when I saw that Jared had given us the fake IDs of Nick and Aurora Briddleston, I knew that I was going to beat him up when I saw him.
Husband and wife? Really?
What did you think???? :)
