treize
Wind carried in gentle wisps, an early fall breeze that worked to surround you in a comforting embrace, a sensation that didn't belong at this moment. She wondered what it was like in New York right now, in the city that never sleeps and the land of skyscrapers that light the night like giants holding lanterns.
The only light now came from the moon, a silver glow that worked alongside the gentle gleam that flooded from the house that was alive with noise. Screaming and cries were heard, snarls of arguments and desperation that made Reyna winced as she heard her best friends heartbeat slowly begin to fade.
She steadied herself, readying as she heard the approaching steps grow louder, more clear - hush whispers passed between Alice and Jasper, silent worries as they discussed the situation and how they were so clearly outnumbered. Their fear was something Reyna felt guilty over as she realized very clearly that she wasn't scared of this outcome, not for herself. Some intrinsic part of her knew that she could not be harmed by tooth and claw by these wolves, not as they could, and she didn't know what to think of that.
Jacob's desperate voice broke through her revery, the wild race of his heart sending a burn of electricity through her as she noticed that so many sounds didn't make sense in the room. A firm, steady beat of a healthy shifter, a hummingbird flutter of another, the baby, with none for her friend. Edward was pleading silently, Rosalie cooing, two new sets of paws hit the earth in a desperate race in their direction, Carlisle and the others still yet to return.
So much was happening so quickly and Reyna found herself unwilling to keep up, grief spreading through her chest like some sickly disease. She couldn't think of anything, she only stood still, deathly so as everything crashed to action.'
Reyna was still fastest by default, a little something that was quickly fading from her system that had her reaching out before either of the two at her side could react, wolves bursting from the trees with an angry growl as they suddenly hit something firm and invisible - hating them dead in their paths as her shield did not waver under her touch.
She kept it firm, arms outstretched as she worked to hold it in place, eyes squeezing shut with the strain she felt upon each impact against it. It was strange now as she found it to be like some sort of extension of herself, not like the glass feeling that had sat against her palms the last time she had attempted this trick, but rather a piece of her, like the duress of her skin, that had manipulated on the outside of her body, living through the attachment of her hands, taking shape of the dome she saw in her mind of it surrounding the house. Reyna didn't really know how she had managed it, how she had worked out such a large space, but she thought of it like the structure of a building, a necessary strength that would cause everything else to crumble.
Without the shield, they would be dead, taken out for standing in their way from the baby they were so desperately against - or at least her family would be and that was all she needed to keep her hold of it.
That did not prevent the wolves from trying to get her to drop it as they continued to ram against it, waiting for it to shatter like the glass they knew it would once they finally broke through.
Her head snapped up to the sound of the whine that came from directly in front of her, finding the eyes that were level with hers painful to meet. Grey fur tickled against the barrier like it was against keeping him away, and Reyna snapped her eyes shut painfully, shaking when his head knocked against it.
It burned, ached, as her muscles protested against her like she was overworking herself and had reached her limit. Her knees were weak, fingers stiff, and Reyna found her shoulder curling inward as she strained to keep it still, strong. It was like she felt every crack that was made and she rushed to fix it, pouring more of herself into it.
They were going faster, the cracks appearing faster than she could keep up, and Reyna was flying back through the air.
Swooshing of air reached her ears, something in her telling her that there would be hands at the ready to catch her, words of a cheer blaring through her head, the familiar dance showing behind her eyelids as she remembered the way she would smile so brightly, hands clapping to a beat - her back hit the ground hard, the pain she was expecting absent, and it came back to her an embarrassing moment later.
She was on her feet once more, watching as the large black one, Sam, faced off against Jasper. Alice was on her back, hand dug into grey fur as she tried to keep him from snapping at her face, a low, yelping sound coming from her throat.
A blur of movement showed as Leah and Seth fought against their old pack, the girl darting through them with this vindictive speed and skill that Reyna found incredibly impressive. She watched as Edward over against a few wolves that lunged in his direction, blood staining his cheeks and hands, his shirt. It made her wondered why he was even out there when his child was inside, his wife - she didn't want to think of it too much.
Taking a step forward, She wasn't expecting to get shoved in the side, knocking her back down. She glared up, the world stuttering to a stop as she was faced with Embry, jittery as he shuffled in place. Reyna moved to get up again but he put a large paw up to her chest, gently pushing her back down. Growling, she pushed against him, holding his paw in her hands as she slowly stood - Embry shoved her back down with an annoyed huff.
"Stop it," she snapped. "Let me up."
He groaned, a warble sound as he tried to say something that she couldn't understand. His head moved from side to side, paw hitting the ground with this agitated huff as he conveyed his want for her to stay in place.
Reyna's glare softened, fingers brushing over his muzzle as she peeked between his legs, a sliver of fear running down her spine as she watched Emmett arrive, Carlisle and Esme close behind. Her motions stilled, hand twitching as her eyes narrowed, focusing, her other arm reached out, palm flat as she imagined the way it looked, a thin veil separating the vampires from the wolves and then it was there, a momentary shield that made them ricochet back from their attacks.
It gave away instantly, weakly shattering from her lack of contact in a way that sucked the air from her lungs. She lay back down then, breathing in the scent of wolf and pine and sea salt that clung to him, intoxicating as she felt his pulse race under her roaming fingers.
"I'm sorry, I really sorry, but you have to let me help them," Reyna said, touch whispering over him before she wedges her foot between them and kicked him back, moving away as her frozen heart twisted within her chest just as she rammed her shoulder into one of the wolves, soft brown in colour, kind eyes, it was hard for her to throw one of Embry's best friends, but she could only hear the swoosh of air that escaped Alice as she moved away, placing herself next to Jasper.
She didn't wait to see where he had landed, moving back a few steps to put her back against Emmett's, his shoulder's heaving as he stood gleefully smiling at Sam, his lips pulled back in a grin that bared perfect white teeth.
It was a nudge of his foot that had her rocketing forward, catching a tail as she went, yanking the boy back as he lunged toward an unaware Seth. He whimpered, one of his friends coming up to take his place.
"Enough!" Jacob's shout stilled her as she had her hands raised up before her. "If you kill her, you kill me."
Reyna looked back, hair whipping against her cheek as she placed her back to the pack. "What?"
"Jacob imprinted," Edward said, almost blankly. "They can't harm her. It's their most absolute law."
The air shifted, angry vengeance, determination shifting to a warry bitterness as they slowly began to retreat. Reyne didn't look at them, not even as a brown wolf poked her in the shoulder, an apologetic nudge as he turned and left, nor did she pay attention to the large grey wolf that plopped itself down at her side and covered his muzzle with his paws.
"Her?" she asked softly. "It's Renesmee?"
Jacob breathed a laugh. "Yeah, definitely a Renesmee."
She shrieked, uncontained joy exploding in her veins as she looked to the house, listening to the fluttering heartbeat and the sound of a soft sucking sound that accompanied it. She took a small step forward, beaming at a still Edward and a grinning Jacob. The girl threw herself forward wrapping Jacob in a hug that he was only too happy to return as they rejoiced.
He spun her, dropping her down only for her to launching herself at Alice, the girl happy placed herself close enough to get herself a hug.
Embry grumbled from his spot on the ground, pouting in a way that only a wolf could. Reyna only laughed at his moping, her good mood not to be contained as she spun around with Alice in a happy jump.
Perhaps it was the wrong time to be so happy when they were just in this horrible fight, but she couldn't stop herself as she felt this tension lift itself from her shoulders, a weight freeing itself. From the moment she received that phone call it had been very intense, very dramatic now that she thought back on it with no extenuating circumstances clouding her judgement. She could see how everything should have been resolved by conversation - she thought that they were no longer enemies after the horrible thing with the newborn army, or at least were on like speaking terms.
A part of her wanted to curl up in a ball in her room, to stay there where she could pretend to be asleep for a few days, but she could bring herself to when she knew that Bella was upstairs in that house somewhere, Renesmee and Rose as well.
"I wanna meet her," Reyna blurted, looking to Edward expectantly. "Can I see her?"
He seemed to come alive at her words, spinning to face the house as he rushed back in. She made to follow close behind but teeth sunk into her shirt pulling her back into him. Embry grumbled a series of yips and warbles. Reyna smiled, the pesky emotions she had for him crashing through her.
"Are you planning to stay here?" she asked him softly, shyly tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Because I'll be able to get you some clothes if you want."
He nodded once earning a happy yip from Seth as he moved to tackle the other boy. Shaking her head fondly, Reyna followed the Cullen inside, itching to join them in the places that they crowded - the front room with Rose and Renesmee, upstairs with Edward and Bella - instead, she went to the bedrooms, moving into hers and checking quickly through her closet for any male garments that Alice might have stashed there.
It pressed into her senses, the sound of his heartbeat as it rang loudly in her ears, a reminder that he was here, that everything was fine, and that he wanted to stay rather than leave with his pack.
Only able to find a stack of rather expensive looking boxer briefs in various sizes with the tag still on them hidden at the bottom of her closet in a paper bag adorned with a bow, Reyna took a pair of each size, thanking every greater entity that she couldn't blush, before ducking into another room, digging in Alice and Jasper's closet for something in his size. It was blessing Alice was addicted to shopping and was always in the market for purchasing the newest fashions, never really wanting to let them wear the same thing more than once. It made finding something unworn and new easy - a pair of slack khakis that looked like they would fit Embry and a t-shirt that was more than likely going to be too tight but would definitely fit better than anything she could steal from Emmett.
Flashing back outside, Reyna tossed the items at the wolf, telling him to meet her back inside when he was ready, before darting to the living room where most have cleared away to help Edward with Bella upstairs, hoping to ensure her change as comfortable.
The girl came to a stop at the entrance, watching as Rosalie held a small bundle to her chest, swaying gently as she hummed an unfamiliar tune. Taking small, cautious steps forward, Reyna stood by the blonde's shoulder, heart melting at the most beautiful face she had ever seen. Renesmee, with soft tufts of bronze hair and her mother's brown eyes, was perhaps the sweetest thing she had ever encountered, bright eyes understand as they met Reyna's topaz ones.
The baby reached a hand out, fingers brushing where she was able to reach Rose, and the blonde was handing her over to Reyna, the weight nothing as it settled against her. Tiny fingers touched her cheek, pictures dancing in her mind of muffled voices in the dark, her own voice sounding out clear as she had spoken and cared for Bella the extent of her pregnancy. A question stood out, asking for confirmation, and Reyna nodded dumbly.
"What was that?"
"She's gifted, like Edward and Bella," Rosalie explains.
Reyna laughs. "Oh, I knew you were going to be so special. I have no doubt you'll grow to be something extraordinary."
Renesmee pressed a hand to her cheek, flashes of a bloody, thin Bella showing in her mind, her voice declaring her protection, her love for her friend, their closeness. There were bits there, of talk of family, of growls and shattering of glass - Reyna saw a glimpse of the window, barely there as she stood before the wolves, back to Emmett's after just having saved Alice, and then it was gone.
"Yes, I promised to keep both you and your mother safe. She is my best friend," she tells the baby.
A scene of Bella lying in the bed dying pressed into her, causing Reyna to wince as Renesmee asked her question. eyes drooping slightly. "No, no one is blaming you. Your mother will not blame you."
The front door opening had her spinning around, his scent invading her as she lost focus on the baby cradled in her arms just for a second. He looked so off in Jasper's clothes, so uncomfortable, and she spared him an apologetic smile.
He didn't return it, only continued to stare at her and Renesmee as though it was the greatest puzzle he had ever encountered like it was this thing odd and curious.
"Embry, I would like for you to meet Renesmee," Reyna said, tilting her head in invitation. he came forward carefully, the sound of his bare feet on the wooden floor the only noise he made as he came to her side, offering a finger to the baby.
"I guess you can say she's your niece," Rosalie quipped.
Jacob snorted. Embry choked.
