The tension was dangerously high around the Cullen home, the edge that each person carried was enough to result in a large snap if one wrong move was made.
The newly weds were kept apart, Rosalie refusing to let him upset Bella in this condition. Reyna couldn't help but agree when her friend looked so ill that it made her sick just to look at her. Skin pale, loosing weight and pulling taunt, Bella was beginning to grow covered in bruises around the stomach. It has only been a week, but the child was growing faster than humanly possible, taking more out of the human than thought possible.
It was a constant struggle for the new vampire, the girl having to fight against her growing thrist with the immediate scent of fresh blood just within her reach while working hard to make sure that no one by passed her to get to Bella. Rosalie was at the human's side near constantly, but Reyna was perched outside the room to keep away the other's unless asked otherwise.
She knew, obviously, that Edward would do anything for Bella, but he could not simply watch her fade away like she was. He would rather die before she was able to leave him, and Reyna was sure she would feel the same if presented with the opportunity.
She hardly knew him, all details and stories shared to her from Bella, but Embry was hers, her heart now that her own was useless. If he was to find danger like this, Reyna would do anything to save him.
Though, in the place where her heart was, she could feel the pain of denying him anything he wanted - if he was willing to die for something, Reyna would no doubt die alongside him. No questions asked.
She imagined it must have been much worse for Edward, having spent two years with his mate only to risk loosing her now, when they were so close to eternity. It only made sense to her that he would be acting so hostile and volatile.
The shuffle of footsteps upstairs brought her to attention, her mind snapping to calculate the placement of each person as they moved about.
It had been a week since Bella's return, a week since they had been permitted to feed. Their was this scare, like the family was frightened of being caught away from the home - that either Charlie or the wolves would come to their door, demanding metaphorical blood. She did not see the issue, the wolves wouldn't come if they were unaware of any problems.
And even then a shield would be all that was needed to keep them from getting any closer. Vampires did not grow tired, she could go over and over again, putting up shield after shield until they stuck firm and were no longer needed.
"Reyna, we have company," the girl looked over her shoulder, heels dusting against the floor as she darted from her place outside the room to where Rosalie stood at the window.
"What?" She questioned, head tilting as she listened carefully - stretching her range as far as she could.
She could hear all the way out to the freeway and winced at the jarring sound of tourist traffic. She pulled back, focusing more on the way to the house and heard the rev of a motorbike as it grew closer to the narrow road.
The newborn focused outward, the vestiges of her newborn enhancements aiding her to pick of Jacob as he drove in this direction, picking him out easily through the small gaps in the leaves.
"You don't think he knows?" She whispered to the blonde, pitching her voice lower than Bella could possibly hear.
Rosalie shook her head. "It's impossible for him to know. He must think she's no longer human."
Reyna winced, eyes fluttering closed for a moment. They were uncertain of what would happen to the human girl, the baby taking more than the human could give.
"Do you want me to get rid of him?" She breathed, dark eyes opening to pin on his as he grew closer to the home. "I can make it so she would never know he was here."
"No, that's alright," Carlisle told her, appearing in the doorway. "I'll send him away."
The girl's watched as he moved to answer the door, listenned as Edward came down from his solitude, agony written in every jerked and jagged movement. They didn't turn to look at him, eyes locked forward out the window to the forest where they could see small animals that were gathering close to the house.
"He won't leave, not when he risked everything to get this close," Reyna stated, crossing her arms in front of her.
"It'll be fine, he won't do anything," Rosalie said, matter of factly.
They looked back, both taking note of her unfinished sentence. He wont do anything to hurt Bella, that is. Jacob surely came with the intention of killing them all, but he could never hurt the girl he loved.
"Hello, Jacob," Carlisle spoke. "How are you?"
Reyna moved around the room slowly, holding herself deadly still as she stood at the back of the couch, as strong as she could manage. One wrong move, she told herself, wrong wrong move and she would remove him in an instant. Her body was still strong, newborn strength lingering on it's last reserves, she could take one measly wolf - friend to Embry or not.
Reyna didn't listen to the conversation, only breathing in the scent of dog and blood that he carried, a lingering of Embry on his skin that was a teasing gift in this time of tension and hunger.
Her control held firm, it had to with Bella so close.
"Is that Jacob?" Her dying friend asked, frail hand gripping at the arm of the arm of the couch as she tried to heave herself up.
"You shouldn't move, Bella," Rosalie adviced. "He shouldn't know what's happening."
Bella scoffed, falling back against the cushion. "Why not? Are we keeping secrets from Jacob now? What's the point?"
Nose turning up, she looked away to the sound of voices as they grew closer and the heartbeat that slammed against ribcage in anticipation. She disagreed, it was the reason they stayed locked away in the house, the fear of what the woves would do. It was not smart to let Jacob in.
"Come in, please, Jacob," Bella called when no one made move to answer her.
Rosalie was bent protectively over Bella when he came in, tucking blankets around the girl and pulling her so her stomach was less visible.
There was a gurgling, a change in Bella, that had Rosalie reaching for a basin in time for her to throw up into, noisily and scratchy on the throat.
"Sorry about that," Bella whispered, moving so that she was peeking around Rosalie.
Jacob was moving forward, getting closer, until Rosalie was turning, hissing protectively at the boy.
"Rose, don't," Bella whispered. "It's fine."
Reyna could see the way the boy winced at the sound of her voice, how he glanced st them, taking note, and she knew he was going to recall it to the pack - how Embry was going to see her like this. She moved from the room, a gently, feathery squeeze to Bella's shoulder as she passed the only notice she gave before she took her wait outside the front of the house, staring up calmly at the grey overcast that came hand and hand with Forks.
She had the opportunity to see so much more now, experience so much more, but she feared it would be bleak and dull compared to what it could be.
She envied Bella and the way she had the chance to experience things as a human.
The growl could be heared clearly from where she stood, both Edward and Jacob rising to fight, and Jasper and Emmett coming out to stop them.
Reyna climbed the steps to the house slowly, listening to the keen sounds of arguing and veiled threats. The rise in a strong heartbeat, the panic flutter of a weak one, Reyna entered the room with a metaphorical bang - hands outstretched as multiple shields csme into existence, bubbling each boy within, holding them mid air before she dropped them back to the ground at opposite ends if the room when the invisible cages shattered from existence.
"No fighting. Stress is bad for the baby," Reyna simply said, not bothering with much else before she began to move away again.
"Behave," Rosalie insisted. "And then come back."
They turned to Reyna, both calling out for her to stay.
"Come, Rey, we were thinking of cool things to do with yiur shields, remember?" Bella's voice cracked on the dryness and she found herself unable to deny her friend anything.
"The floating bubble thing definitely worked," Rosalie joked, and Reyna smacked her arm.
They continued teasing her, calling out things that only superheroes should have been able to do, but she never protested any idea, far to thrilled to have the tension washed away if only for a few minutes. Bella should have had the chance at a happy, glowing pregnancy, and Reyna was determined to give the girl the few moments she could.
It was when she finally heard the line if conversation that she glanced to Rose, watching as her face tightened. She had no doubt that Emmett would return soon, having heard everything as well, to stand guard by his mate.
Reyna wanted ti go out and argue with them both, make them see what she could - what Rose and Esme could. The boys could never understand what the girls had lost, the ability to have this experience ; and Alice couldn't try to relate, not remembering what she wanted before this new life began.
She had wanted a future with a husband and kids, one with a sweet little house of her own design. If Bella wished for that chance, to give Edward the chance to watch their child grow up, than who were they to stop her.
People had died for less noble causes - herself being one of them.
It was Edward's next suggestion that had both vampires recoiling in disgust. They ache that spread through came witha new desire to kick Edward's ass all over the front yard. To suggest that Bella have Jacob's children, asking him to give her puppies. Reyna was seeing red, and she had no doubt Rosalie felt the same from the way dhe tightened in anger, lips compressing in displeasure.
Reyna took a sharp breath, ignoring the fire in her throat. "I was thinking of making it like a shield were it sticks to your body, like a second skin," she finally said, responded to Bella's chosen topic of conversation.
The girl cooed. "Then you can protect my baby from everything and anything with a shield like that. You'll be a wonderful aunt."
"Aunt?" Reyna repeated, head suddenly fuzzy.
"If course. Did you think you wouldn't be important? You're my best friend Rey. Three aunt's and a grandmother are all the woman this little boy will need," Bella spoke softly, hoarsely.
"Oh, Bella," Rosalie sighed. "Every child needs there mother, no matter how much love he receives."
Reyna ran her fingers through thd girl's greasy hair. "You're not going to die, Bella. We'll find a way to make this work, I promise. Carlisle is upstairs right now looking for something."
"I'm not afraid of that. I just want to make sure he's safe and cared for. Promise me you'll make sure Edward stays with him," Bella pleaded softly.
"No," Reyna snapped. "I'm not promising you anything of the sort because you'll both be there to raise him."
She stood, slipping from the room with angry clicks to her heels a beat to her ears. Every part of her wanted out, to feel the freedom of running once more, but she was to stay in the house apparently like some boxed animal.
She passed the boys on the way to the stairs, eyes locking with Edward's, lip curling in a returned flush of anger. "Don't even think about it. You're both disgusting," the girl hissed before she continued up the stairs, a pride hold in her stride.
Unable to just sit and do nothing, Reyna found herself tapping against ths door of Carlisle's study, kbowing thst he was aware she was there, but choosing to be polite.
"Come in, Reyna," he called with that softness his voice always held.
The girl reigned in her emotions before she stepped in, smoothing out the fabric of her checkered skirt.
"Hello, Carlisle. I was hoping to help you with some reading, maybe we can find something together," she offered, wincing once she heard how lame it sounded aloud.
Carlisle smiled "I could always use a study partner."
