Chapter 35

Loki didn't know what to do with the news from Morgan's visions. He was horrified by what she had seen. The only thing he could even think to do was to speak with his mama and see if she could help him better understand the visions and how to deal with them without hurting Morgan.

So Thor carried Morgan to bed so she could recover from the visions while Loki made his way out of the tower. He went to the bifrost circle, feeling strange doing so alone. He usually always went home with Thor, but this time Thor was staying on Midgard to look after Morgan. And help the team. Loki called to Heimdall as soon as he was in the middle of the bifrost circle. The markings had been permanently etched into the earth since the brothers had been going back and forth so often.

The bifrost opened and Loki braced himself for the trip up the rainbow bridge. It was always a bit disorienting. He stepped out into the bifrost chamber to see Heimdall with his giant sword as per usual. "Welcome home, your highness," Heimdall greeted him as always. He wasn't surprised that Loki had returned home, he was all-seeing after all.

Loki nodded a greeting to the guardian with a murmur of thanks and teleported to the palace. He had locked onto Frigga's location, wanting to go straight to her to sort out his problem with Morgan's visions.

He was surprised to find that he appeared outside of her sitting room instead of outside the healing wing. It was strange for her to take an afternoon off, but he was grateful for it. He wouldn't have to interrupt her duties. Loki knocked on her suite's door and one of her maids let him in without question. He was always welcome in her chambers.

Frigga looked up from her embroidery, surprised to see Loki home. She set the project aside and practically jumped to her feet to go hug her son. "Loki! You're home!" she exclaimed as she hugged him tightly. He gave her some kind of affirmative and hugged her tightly, thought relaxed slightly to be in his mama's arms when he needed her so. She sensed the trouble and unease in him. "What's wrong, my darling?" she asked him gently as she held him as long as he needed her to.

Loki hesitated before he started to spill his soul. "I need your help, Mother. I'm so confused,"

"Anything, darling," Frigga reassured him. She was always there for anything her son needed. She let him go long enough to lead him to her favorite couch. She fully expected Loki to curl up next to her as he'd done as a child so he could tell her all about his troubles. He did exactly as she expected, laying his head in her lap like a lost child, instead of the formidable prince that he was. That told her more of his mindset than anything else. She stroked his hair while he spilled his soul and told her his troubles. He told her all about Morgan's vision and the concerns he had for her and for what it might mean for him and for their relationship. His words finally ran out and Frigga waited another moment before she spoke. "Alright, my darling. It sounds like you have a difficult decision to make," she told him gently while he looked up at her plaintively, his head on her lap and her fingers running soothingly through his hair. "Do you truly believe you are not the right man for Lady Morgana? That she is not the right woman for you?"

Loki considered the question before he answered. It was always best to reason with this son, to let him come up with his answers on his own. Frigga knew her sons well. "I feel she deserves better than a broken, ruthless monster. She deserves someone who sees her worth and can match her intellect and strength. I'm just an adopted pawn, raised as a prince and lied to all his life by the man I thought was my father. I have too much baggage and I've done horrible things. Ana deserves better than that," Loki admitted with tears in his eyes. He didn't want to lose Morgan, but he had so many reasons why she deserved someone so much better than him.

"You are no monster, my darling. You are my son," Frigga reminded him gently as she stroked his hair. It always soothed him as a child, and still worked miracles now. "And you are a prince of Asgard." Being adopted made no difference to Frigga. Loki was her son.

"I'm a cold-hearted frost giant, Mother. I've killed innocent people and threatened all of the nine realms. I couldn't possibly be a match for someone so wonderful," Loki protested.

"You've made mistakes. As have we all, darling. Yes, you are a frost giant, but more than that, you are my son, and I know you possess a caring loving soul. But if you truly believe that this relationship is not what is best for you both, then you know what you must do,"

Loki sighed and whimpered softly. "I don't want to lose her, Mother. I love her. More than I can put into words,"

Frigga continued to stroke his hair. "I know. That is what makes this decision so very difficult,"

Loki's tears began to roll from his eyes. "I don't know what to do. I'm so lost, Mother," he said so plaintively.

"I know, my darling, I know," she told him gently. "I cannot tell you what to do. I can only guide you and give my advice. And I will respect any decision you make,"

"What would you do in a situation like this?" he asked, hoping for her guidance.

Frigga sighed, knowing that he wouldn't like her answer. "With the fact that you are even considering ending things with her, no matter the reason, it seems to me that you do not truly believe this to be the best match," she told him gently "and if it not the best match, if it will not make you both happy, then I would end the relationship before it gets more serious,"

"I'm only considering it because I want what's best for her!" Loki protested. He didn't want to leave Morgan.

"My point remains," Frigga insisted, though gently and caringly as usual. "You are considering it because you refuse to believe that you are what is best for her. You should not lead her along if you do not wish to be with her any longer, if you cannot see a future with her,"

"But I can! That's why this is so hard!" Loki practically wailed, much like a child being told something that he felt wasn't fair.

Frigga nodded, plaiting little braids into his hair. "You must decide what is best for you both, my darling. It is not a decision I can make for you," she reminded him. "Do you see a future with her, even if you do not regain your Asgardian form?"

"I don't want to lose her, Mother. I've never felt this way for anyone before."

"Then you must learn to accept yourself. It is unfair to her otherwise," Frigga told him. He would have to come to terms with his jotun nature and learn to accept that it was part of who he was.

He sighed and groaned as he closed his eyes, not wanting to deal with that truth. "That isn't going to be easy. I was taught for most of my life that jotuns are cold hearted monsters,"

Frigga nodded. "I know, my darling, but is it fair to ask her to love you when you cannot stand yourself?" she paused and considered something. "Hold still, darling," she told him and placed her glowing gold fingers on his temples as her eyes glowed gold. Loki felt her stiffen as she bit back the pain of calling forth visions. It hurt more to call the visions than to just allow them to come as they willed. He waited quietly for her to speak. "I see you on the jotun throne. But why? I need to see further back," her eyes moved as she sought something further back in the timeline, a reason, an explanation. "Before that, you decided to travel to Jotunheim to learn to control your jotun abilities. Before that-" she paused and gasped. "Oh. Oh no. That's why. That is why you ended things with Morgana," she said horrified.

"Why? What did I do that lead to me ending things with Ana?" Loki practically demanded, desperate to know what in his future could make him make such a decision.

Before she could say, she was thrown from the visions, either he'd moved slightly, or something else had thrown her, but she was blinking quickly as her eyes return to normal. She stroked Loki's hair to ground herself as she breathed through the pain of visions and didn't seem to realize that he'd asked her a question.

Loki's brows furrowed in concern. "Are you alright, Mother?"

"Calling visions is always difficult, darling," she reassured him gently. At least her voice wasn't pained anymore and Loki could relax at that. She would tell him if something were truly wrong.

"I know. I'm sorry you had to do that," he never would have asked it of her, and she knew it.

"Anything for you, my darling," she told him warmly. And she really would do anything for her son. Loki sighed and leaned into her touch, always relaxed with his mama. She smiled fondly as she hadn't seen him like this in years. He thought over what to do while he rested with his head on her lap.

"You can stay here as long as you need to figure things out," Frigga reassured him gently.

Loki nodded. "I was planning on staying for a day or two to give me a chance to think things over.

Frigga nodded. "Very well, darling. I'll be glad to have you around the palace again," she said warmly as she finished plaited Viking style braids into his hair. He purred, melting from her ministrations. She chuckled. "I used to do this all the time when you were young," she reminisced. "So your brother couldn't accidentally static your hair. Until you decided that you preferred keeping your hair short instead to circumvent the problem."

"I think I remember that, but I like my long hair more. I think my shorter hair looked a bit ridiculous," he admitted.

"The long hair suits you, darling," Frigga told him warmly.

He smiled and relaxed fully. Frigga always knew what to say. "Thank you, Mother,"

They spend a couple quiet days together in Asgard and it was nice to finally relax and spend time together, even if Loki's problem was eating at him. He tried his best to enjoy his time with his mother but he was constantly brought back to his problem back on Midgard.

"Have you decided what you're going to do, darling?" Frigga asks him after dinner a couple of days after he'd been home.

It had taken Loki a long time to decide and he finally nodded solemnly. "I won't give up on her. I don't want to lose her or how she makes me feel. She's too precious to me,"

Frigga nodded with a proud smile. "As I expected, darling. Treat her as precious as she is, cherish her, and you'll be just fine,"

He leaned over to kiss her cheek. "Thank you, Mother," he said, excited to get back to Midgard and make things right with Morgan. She deserved so much better, and he would do everything in his power to make sure he was worthy of her.
