01; lies and heaven
chapter 1
➖
It was late at midnight when Grace awoke from her sleep horrified of the nightmare she had. She had shook it off and took deep breaths, calming herself. She had slipped out of bed and walked to the kitchen for water.
She switched on the kitchen lights and poured herself cold water from the dispenser. She pushed herself up on the counter and gulped down the water all at once.
A key was inserted into the front door as the person twists with it to open the door. Finally, the door unlocks and Brian O'Conner steps into the house, sighing as he locks the door behind him.
Grace watches silently as he moves around the living room, searching for something or looking like he was thinking. "What's wrong?" Grace voiced her thoughts, making Brian jump since he didn't realize that his little sister was there.
"Nothing." Brian answered, obviously lying as he cleared his throat. He ran his fingers through his blond locks as he steps inside the kitchen and stands beside where Grace was sitting.
"Why are you late?" Grace asks curiously, "It's one in the morning and I'm pretty sure that as a cop you're supposed to leave earlier than that. Cops don't stay this log at their job unless they have endless work or they're watching over prisoners. And if you had paper work, you would've told me. So tell me Brian, what lie are you going to make up now?"
"I never lied, G." Brian replied, "My car broke down on the middle of the road and I had to walk home from here." He lied, his thoughts wandering to how his car actually exploded instead.
Grace nods, chuckling. "Alright, Bri, I'll let this one lie slip just 'cuz I'm sleepy." She points an accused finger at him before she walks off to her room.
"Hey," Brian calls after her, "No goodnight kiss for me? How am I supposed to sleep?"
Grace laughs, rolling her eyes as she walks back to Brian. She purses her lips before she presses a kiss to his cheek. She pats his chest and smiles, "Night, Bri."
"Night, G."

"So, where exactly are you taking me?" Grace asks, clicking her tongue as she leans her head against the window. She had just finished her job as a waitress at the cafe a couple minutes ago. Brian had drove by the cafe and picked her up since her manger closed the shop early. Now, Brian was taking Grace somewhere to have lunch.
"The Toretto Diner." Brian answers, his blue eyes meeting her brown ones before he focuses back on the road. "They have good tuna sandwiches." He adds, shrugging.
"You know I hate tuna." Grace mutters, chuckling.
"I know, but they also have other stuff on the menu." He replies as the car comes to a halt in front of the diner.
"Okay." Grace replies, not sure of her answer herself. She steps out of the red pickup truck, slamming the door shut behind her. "Just so you know, I'm blaming you if I get food poisoning." She adds, giving him a look.
"You're doing that thing again where you get ahead of yourself, G." Brian says, laughing when his sister smacks his shoulder playfully.
Brian and Grace walk across the street to the diner where rock music was playing. Grace looks around the diner before she slides onto a stool beside Brian.
"You brought a guest this time." Mia says, standing straight from the counter and walking towards them.
"Yeah," Brian smiles, "This is my little sister, Grace." He says, looking at Grace who smiles at Mia.
"Mia." Mia introduces, extending her hand towards Grace who shakes it with a, "Nice meeting you."
"So," Mia sighs, turning to look at Brian. "Tuna on white no crust, right?" She asks, already knowing what he orders.
"I don't know, how is it?" Brian asks, crossing his arms on the counter as he looks up at Mia.
Mia sighs, rolling her eyes. "Everyday for the last three weeks you've been coming in here and you've been asking me how the tuna is no." She adds, "It was crappy yesterday, it was crappy the day before, and...guess what? Hasn't changed."
Brian chuckles, "I'll have the tuna."
"No crust?"
"No crust."
Mia nods before she turns to look at Grace, "And what would you have?"
"I'll just have a water." Grace says meekly, pursing her lips.
Mia nods before she walks back to make the sandwich. Meanwhile, Grace turns to look at Brian with a look. "Seriously?" She asks, amused by what happened a few seconds ago.
"What?" Brian asks, acting innocent.
"What was that?" She asks, laughing.
"What was what?" He was acting oblivious, like he didn't know what she was talking about.
"You've been coming here everyday for the last three weeks?" Grace asks, laughing. "You don't come here for the tuna, do you?" She adds between chuckles.
"Shut up." Brian scoffs, blushing slightly.
Grace wanted to add something but she shut her mouth when Mia came back with the tuna sandwich and the water.
"Thank you." The siblings chorused, taking their orders from her.
The three of them turn to look behind them when four car speed from the end of the neighborhood, their engines roaring loudly.
Grace's eyebrows furrowed as four race cars skidded to a halt in front of the diner. Letty stepped out of the red car, Vince, Leon, and Jesse stepping out of their own cars.
The four of them huddled around car to fix it's engine while Grace turns to drink her water. Brian sighs and turns to eat his sandwich while Mia just leans against the counter.
"'Sup guys." Mia greets when the racers step into the diner.
"How you 'doin Mia?" Jesse replies, smiling at her.
"How you livin' girl?" Letty replies, walking towards Dom who sits in his office.
Vince leans forward on the counter, looking at Brian. Brian looks back at him with a blank look on his face while Grace busies herself by drinking her water.
"Vince!" Mia says, noticing the look Vince was giving Brian. "Vince!" Mia repeats, louder this time to get his attention.
"What?" Vince says, his voice low as he turns to look at Mia.
"Can I get you anything?" She asks, crossing her arms.
"You look good." Vince said instead, looking at her up and down.
Brian looks at Vince before he stands up, fishing money out of his pocket. "Well thanks a lot Mia, see you tomorrow." He says, placing the money on the counter. He turns to look at Grace, "C'mon, Grace."
"Gladly." Grace whispers, jumping off the stool as she gives Vince a glare before she follows Brian out of the diner.
"No!" Vince exclaims, his fist hitting the counter. He gets up and follows Brian and Grace out of the diner. "Try Fatburger from now on. Get yourself a double cheese with fries 295, faggot." He says, his fist clenching as he glares at Brian's back.
"I like the tuna here." Brian says, looking at Vince over his shoulder as Grace walks close by.
"Bullshit, asshole, no one likes the tuna here." Vince growls, stomping after Brian.
"Yeah, well I do." Brian says before Vince pushes him against the car. Brian instantly swings back a punch, hitting him square in the jaw.
Vince leans down and runs, pushing Brian against the car by his waist. Brian knees him in the stomach and repeatedly starts punching his stomach. Vince growls and throws him on the ground, jumping over him as he punches him in the face.
Grace kicks Vince harshly on the side, pushing him off of Vince. Vince pushes Grace against the car, making her groan in pain. Brian growls and jumps to his feet, pulling Vince away from his sister.
"Don't touch my sister!" He sneers, sitting on Vince on the road and punching him repeatedly.
Dom picks up Brian from on top of Vince and pushes him against a car. "Hey man, using my face." Brian says, holding his hands out in surrender.
"I'm in your face." Dom says just as Vince tries to attack Brian again but Dom pushes him away. "Relax! Don't push it!" He yells at Vince, pointing an accusing finger at him. "You embarrass me!"
Dom turns to Brian, noticing a wallet in Jesse's hand. "Jesse, give me the wallet." He says, grabbing the wallet and opening it. "Brian Earl Spilner. Sounds like a serial killer name. Is that what you are?" Dom asks, narrowing his eyes at Brian.
"No man." Brian answers, shaking his head.
"Don't come around here again." Dom says, pointing a finger at him as he hands Brian back the wallet.
"Hey man you know this is bullshit, he touched my sister." Brian yells after Dom.
"You work for Harry's, right?" Dom asks, pointing to the red pickup truck.
"Yeah, I just started." Brian answers.
"Well, you were just fired." Dom says before he walks away.
Brian sighs, turning to his sister who has her arms crossed while she leans back against the red truck. "I'm sorry. Are you okay?" He asks, walking to his sister.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I just felt like punching all of them. Especially the one that looks like a WWE star." Grace replies, muttering. "Listen, Bri, I just wanna go home."
"Okay," Brian nods, "After we get you breakfast. You haven't eaten anything yet."
Grace smiles thankfully at her brother, giving him a small hug before she climbs into the truck. Brian follows into the driver's seat before he starts the car then he pulls out of the parking spot.
♡ ♡ ♡
"Hey Bri, I'm headed to the grocery store. We ran out of milk." Grace lied, using her lamest excuse.
"Alright, be safe." Brian called from inside of his room, pulling on his shirt.
"Okay." Grace says before she walks to the front door. She grabs her phone and steps out the front door. She shuts it softly before she runs to Brian's bright green race car.
Grace opens the trunk and climbs in, shutting it once she settled inside. Her phone lights through the dark and she breathes out a sigh, waiting for Brian.
Brian quickly runs out of the front door before he jogs to his car, excited for the race. He slides into the driver's seat and turns it on, the engine rumbling under Grace who groans slightly.
Brian speeds down the road, following the directions he remember in his mind. Grace held onto the walls of the trunk around her at the high speed Brian was driving.
Soon, the car skids to a halt and Brian steps out of the car, his eyes roaming the crowd that gathered for the race.
Grace groans slightly as she pushes the trunk open, falling out of it. People give her weird stares as she stands up from the floor. A gasp escapes her lips as her eyes scan the place, her breath stuck in her throat.
The street was packed with people that were practically naked. Race cars were everywhere while money literally laid on the floor. Through Grace's eyes this was heaven.
The place screamed trouble and that's what seemed to intrigue Grace. The atmosphere, the smell of fresh money, the sound of the people cheering, and everything about the place gave Grace a good feeling.
Grace turned around the car and walked through the crowd, her eyes analyzing everything. She suddenly bumped into a back and she muttered a sorry, looking up at the person.
"Grace?" Brian asks, his eyes widening as he turned to look at his sister. He instantly put his arms around her like he was protecting her from this cruel place. "What are you doing here?" He whispered, looking down at her.
"I followed you here. I had to know where you always ran off to in the middle of the night." Grace replies honestly, looking up at him with her big brown eyes.
"You couldn't just ask me?"
"We both know that you would've lied to my face." She snaps, glaring at him. "I'm mad about that by the way."
"I'm sorry." Brian whispers, "Now c'mon, I'm driving you home."
"No."
"No?"
"No." Grace clarifies, "I'm staying here. I like it here." She stubbornly says. "I'm watching you race and I'm staying here. Now go and get ready for the race. I don't want to be on the loser's team."
Brian sighs, shaking his head but he couldn't help the smile that appeared on his face. "Just punch balls if anyone gets near you, okay?" He asks and Grace nods. He kisses her forehead before he scurries away.
"You look too young for this place. How old are you?" Letty asks, appearing in Grace's vision.
"I'm 17. Who are you?" Grace asks, eyeing Letty.
"I'm Letty."
"Grace."
"So tell me Grace," Letty sighs, "How and why are you here?"
"I followed my brother here. I think that answers both of your questions." Grace answers, rocking on her feet.
"It does." Letty chuckles, "Do you race?" She asks.
"No, but I'd like to." Grace replies, shrugging.
"Racing takes talent. You'll nail it if you've got it in you." Letty says, crossing her arms.
"I think I've got it in me. I just have to turn 18 for that." Grace responds, making Letty laugh.
"We'll see, Grace." Letty says before she turns around and disappears into the crowd.
