Birthday Special

So I didn't know what to do for this special day that I've been dying to see. I was just gonna shitpost Lance and cry over him or make a chapter dedicated to why he's so perfect but a birthday special is much better tbh XD

Enjoy this Lance's birthday chapter that has nothing to do at all with this AU (also Shiro is still here for the chapter so it isn't accurate to the show)

Lance quietly sat in the control room of the castle, bundled up in blankets as he looked at the constellations outside of the ship with a disconnected look on his face while his right hand twisted a piece of his brown hair he had been growing out. The group had been so busy with trying to defeat Zarkon and restore peace to the galaxies he had taken over that they had lost track of time.

Today was July twenty eighth, the day of Lance's birthday but no one remembered it even Hunk who had always been there during each of his birthdays. Lance sighed deeply and placed his chin onto his knees while he stared at a blue and pink gas planet that resembled Jupiter slightly like with the red storm on it that would continue on for eternity. Homesickness was a given being up here, possibly billions of light years away from his family and whatnot. He smiled at the thought of waking up and everything he had been living through turns out to be just a very, very long nightmare to which he would be greeted by his family celebrating his birthday with all of his favorite foods and even the traditional get together with relatives where they would celebrate.

He loved all of the gifts he had received last year and he wished he could have gone back to his home in order to see everyone once more. His father had bought him a new gaming system that he and his brother had played for a full twenty four hours after getting it, his sister had bought him the entire album collection of Adele like he had begged for, his brother got him the lamest thing as a gag gift which was a pink Hello Kitty tee ball bat. His mother had given him the best gift though, she gave him a sweater that she had hand knit for him. Now you could call Lance a mama's boy to his face and he would completely agree with it and flaunt all of his gifts his mother had knitted him from the cat ear hat he received when he was six to the '#1 Sharp Shooter' sweater she gave him last year. Hell, he could make a PowerPoint slideshow with fifty slides talking just about how much he loved his mother before he would even get to the other half of it which explained her personality.

He was forever a mama's boy and he'd never take it as an insult. Lance smiled slightly as his eyes stung with grief, "I miss you all so much..." He whispered and felt a sharp pain in his heart as he imagined how sad his family were right now. They probably thought he was dead.

"Lance," a familiar voice sounded causing Lance to jump slightly in fright as he wiped away the stray tears before Keith could see them.

Lance pulled the blanket around himself tightly and hunkered down inside of it as he tried to hide from the red paladin. "Why are you up so late? We have to go planets tomorrow to start getting rid of the remainders of the Galra you know," he stated.

"Yeah I know but," Keith took a seat next to Lance and stared out into space to watch the same planet Lance had been eyeing as he remembered his family. "You seemed distracted today, everyone was worried that something happened during the visit to Shay's planet."

Lance shook his head, "I'm fine Keith," He mumbled and glanced over at the younger boy to feel the pain in his heart recede ever so slightly as he took in the sight of Keith smiling quietly into the distance.

He never liked Keith until he was forced to save the galaxy with the guy; he had always seen Keith to be some type of jerk who never cared about anyone but himself. It was jealousy that made him think that way of course and even now he still held an inferiority complex towards the paladin who happened to be better than him at everything.

Keith looked away from the planet suddenly as if he realized that Lance had been staring at him from under the blankets that kept him safe. His purple eyes went from worried to having a gentle look to them as Lance looked away in embarrassment. "Hey, I want to show you something," Keith stated as he stood up and held his hand out to Lance who just quietly stared at it.

He frowned slightly and raised his blue eyes to meet the purple eyes of the rather odd boy standing above him, "What are you going to show me?" He asked suspiciously.

Keith stuck his bottom lip out slightly as he rolled his eyes, "Can't you just trust me? I want to show you something you may like," he urged as he motioned towards his outstretched hand.

Lance pursed his lips and narrowed his eyes at Keith for a long moment before he finally gave in and allowed the black blankets to fall off his body as Keith helped him stand up. "What do you need to show me, samurai?" He smirked slightly as Keith rolled his eyes and began to drag him out of the control room and into the hallway outside.

"You can just wait," Keith said bluntly and led him around the castle. "Allura told me about the room she used to use to talk to her father before the whole uh-" Keith peeked around a corner as if he were checking for any signs of the other paladins in case they were caught wandering around so late at night.

"Before the castle nearly killed us all?" Lance inquired as he stared at the hand that Keith was still holding rather tightly. "You're still holding my hand you know," he pointed out with an unamused face.

Keith's cheeks turned a soft shade of pink as he let go of Lance and led him down the hallway he had been studying moments before. "Right, sorry."

"So, what about the room?" Lance asked as he stuffed his hands into his jacket and followed Keith out of curiosity.

Keith didn't say anything at first until they stopped at a large door that Lance had passed by dozens of times before but never once questioned what laid beyond it. "Well, she said that it could simulate anything..." He whispered as he opened the door and shooed Lance inside urgently. "I didn't get permission to come here so don't get caught or Shiro might yell at us for not being in bed."

Lance stumbled forward into a dark room with absolutely nothing in it except for a control panel looking thing sticking up from the middle of the floor. "You're being weird, what did you want to do with me in this room anyways?" Lance fixed his shirt and eyes Keith suspiciously as he watched the guy waddle over to the weird control thing to begin typing in random things he didn't quite understand.

"Just come over here and press your hand against this," Keith ordered Lance rather rudely making Lance feel like arguing with the boy but he didn't have the energy to do it so he obediently followed the orders and watched at the screen under his hand lit up orange. "There, now just stand there and watch," Keith smiled as he stepped away from Lance.

Lance was confused by Keith's words. What was so special about this stupid room? Sure it allowed Allura to talk to her AI father at one point but he didn't know why that was even important to him in any case. He didn't have his father programmed into the castle to talk to or even his siblings or mother for that matter; so why did Keith drag him out here in the dead of night?

He was looking at Keith with a look of annoyance and frustration until he felt something wet drop onto his head. He blinked in confusion and watched as the once empty room transformed into something he thought he would never see again. The two of them were standing in a valley's grassy field with mountains surrounding them like a giant bowl. Grey storm clouds loomed above the two paladins and in little patches where the grey sheets of fluffiness didn't connect he could see the familiar shade of blue he had spent nearly all of his life looking at on Earth. He didn't know if the wetness on his cheeks were his tears or the raindrops that fell from hundreds of feet above them as he began to breakdown in joy at the sight of water falling down on him.

He missed this, he missed standing in the rain and feeling it slide down his dark skin and he even missed the sounds of the droplets falling down on the greenery around him as it pattered down onto the earth in a symphony that only nature could create. "It's..." Lance couldn't form a sentence as he held his hands out and felt the droplets splatter in his palms.

"Home," Pidge's voice sounded from behind Lance making him look over his shoulder in surprise.

Standing behind him was the entire voltron team even Coran and Allura. Everyone held a smile on their face and gifts in their hands. "Happy birthday Lance!" Shiro and Allura exclaimed in excitement.

"We thought you'd love to see home again," Hunk said as he pointed to the sky.

Coran nodded as he twisted the tip of his mustache, "It was all Keith's idea though so you should thank him before any of us!" He stated.

Keith turned red as Lance stumbled over to him and brought him into a tight hug. "I-It wasn't that great of an idea!" He exclaimed in embarrassment as their teammates laughed in amusement.

Lance shook his head and closed his eyes, "No, it wasn't great," He whispered as he squeezed Keith in his arms. "It was perfect."
