Chapter 2: Carefree

[Time Skip, Three Days]

I sat at the edge of the room and filled out forms while the children were playing with one another. They almost seemed like normal children when they're like this. 953 was sitting beside me looking around.

953: "You're strange. You know that?"

Me: "I am aware."

953: "No matter the situation it doesn't matter to you. Not even immense pain effects you."

Me: "Live indefinitely and that will happen. I cannot fear death because death is impossible for me. I've seen the ones I love pass, but I have no chance of joining them. I don't even know if I'll die of old age one day."

953: "Yet you still show care for children because they remind you of your sister. Human emotions are odd and fun to play with. But you're only fun to play with in the physical sense. You're rather cold towards me."

Me: "Can you blame me? You took the form of my sister. You refused to change out of that form because it disturbs me."

I shifted the paper I had just finished and began working on the next one. I looked over to the children. 191 was sitting and staring at the laptop I had brought for her, most likely drawing. And 40 was talking to 239, while occasionally laughing with her. I liked these days, they seemed to help the SCPs relax and have fun. Not to mention they feel like normal children for awhile.

Intercom: "Dr. (L/N), we have a transfer needing approval."

Me: "A transfer? We weren't scheduled to have a transfer."

I stood up and sighed. I looked to the guards in the room.

Me: "Please take them back to their rooms, one at a time. We'll do this again tomorrow to make up for it."

The guards nodded and began moving towards the children. The entire walk to the front gates consisted of me cursing at whoever neglected to inform me of the transfer, and the fact they chose the worst possible day for it. As I arrived at the gates three people stood before me, two guards and one man dressed in a lab coat. I recognized the man. He had a smile on his face, the bastard thinks this is funny. This man was Dr. Charles Lockheart. Dr. Lockheart was nothing special to look at, short brown hair, matching eyes, and small bifocal glasses. As I walked up I gave an irritated smile.

Me: "Doctor, what a pleasant surprise. What brings you here?"

Charles: "Oh just making an emergency transfer. Had a bit of an incident at site 06-3. I decided that we should transfer the subject here, because of your... relatable nature with the subject."

I clenched my teeth.

Me: "Oh? And what might this 'relatable nature' be?"

Charles: "Now, now, no need to get hostile, or the O5 may rethink your class to Keter."

I took a deep breath. This man always infuriated me.

Me: "Well CHARLES why not hand over the paperwork and leave them in my care so you may head back."

Charles glared at me as I called him by his first name, he always hated that. He handed me the paperwork and motioned for the guards to go outside for something.

Charles: "I've taken the liberty of bringing the furnishings that were in its cell. Please handle the SCP with care, it's quite fragile."

Me: "Have the guards move all the furniture to room 16-a, the room is padded. I have to start on the surprise paperwork."

He nodded and walked out the front gates. I began the walk to my office, the entire time I was filling out the paperwork I had been handed while also reviewing information on SCP-706, the one being transferred.

Me: "Adolescent European-American, retrieved from Texas, homeschooled, resting body temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius. Epidermis composed of porcelain, excessive movement causes 'skin' to crack and break, can be repaired with consuming raw materials, kaolin preferred. Obsessed with maintaining appearance. Subject has shown signs of clinical depression as of late."

I finally reached my office and sat at my office chair. I sat my papers down and yawned.

Me: "I don't think I've slept in a few days, I should probably take a nap after I welcome our new guest."

[Time Skip]

I had finally finished all of my paperwork and I was heading to the room of the new resident. Once I reached the room I notice not a single guard was there. I knocked on the door before entering. The room was furnished rather nicely, I instantly noticed the lack of sharp edges, everything with a corner was rounded out. The young female was sat at a table with a vanity mirror staring into it and brushing her hair.

Me: "Hello 706, my name is Dr. (L/N). I'm the head researcher of this site."

I took a seat across from her and noticed she hadn't stopped what she was doing, or even looked away from the mirror. Just like the file said, her skin was porcelain besides small gaps near her joints.

Me: "How are you doing today 706?"

No answer.

Me: "Any pain or discomfort?"

Once again, nothing.

Me: "I am only trying to help, do you need anything? Kaolin? Make up?"

Once again, nothing. I decided to try something else.

Me: "Charlotte... I know this isn't exactly easy, but I am trying to help you and make this place a bit more comfortable."

She suddenly stopped. Then looked at me. I knew her real name from her file, honestly I wasn't supposed to use the real names of SCPs but I know how degrading it can be to be called a number.

706: "That's what the last man said. I just want to go home... mommy."

I sighed. I knew her mother and father were dead. The mother had shot the father when he was drunk, then killed herself, all in front of 706.

Me: "I'm sorry... but we both know... there's no where to go for you."

Tears began to fall from her eyes, and she began sobbing.

Me: "Charlotte... let me tell you a story. This story is about a boy, long long ago when electricity wasn't even harnessed yet. Back when the world was still young."

706 looked up at me, to show she was listening.

Me: "This boy was normal, like everyone else. He had a family, a mother, a father, and little sister. He loved each of them dearly, however he felt the need to protect his little sister, no matter what. See, she was very frail from birth, and in that time it was a miracle she made it as long as she had."

I sighed as I continued.

Me: "One day, after working in the fields for the day, the boy wanted to return home. So he did. However when he arrived, something was off, usually his mother was there to greet him, but no one was outside. Then... then he heard the scream. It was his little sister, he knew her voice so well. He rushed inside... to find his mother and sister laying lifeless on the floor, his father standing over them. He couldn't make sense of it. Why would he do this? His father would never have done something like this."

I paused, after so many years I could still see that scene in my mind.

706: "T-Then what?"

706 seemed to have calmed down while listening to the story.

Me: "Then... then he did the only thing he could do. He avenged his family, and with his father's last breath he cursed his own son. Cursed him to never know rest, to see everything before him pass but never wither or grow old. And so the boy lived, but truly... he died that day."

706 looked at me, but her expression never changed due to the porcelain skin.

Me: "I told you that story because I too know what it's like to lose a family. To feel like you are alone. But please know, you are not alone in life. There are many here that know your pain. And you will get to meet each one, so please try to hang on a while longer."

She nodded slowly. I slowly stood up and stretched, then yawned.

Me: "Tomorrow is a day where we'll be having a get together with each of the residents here. If you're up for it you can join, however I'll probably wheel you there in a wheelchair due to your fragile body, too much movement may cause damage. Also, as I said, if you'd like anything just tell me and I'll try my hardest to get it for you."

She nodded then looked around the room.

706: "May I have a bigger mirror?"

I looked around, the only mirror in the room was the small vanity mirror she had in front of her.

Me: "I'm sure I can work something out. Anything else?"

706: "Clothes?"

The dress she was wearing did seem a bit old, like she had been wearing it far too often.

Me: "Of course, although I'm not the best with fashion, so I'll pick out quite a few. Does anything irritate your skin? Silk, Cotten, anything like that?"

She shook her head.

Me: "I'll see what else I can find while I'm at it. Most likely some make up, or new brushes, yours seem a bit overdue for an exchange."

She nodded and, somehow, I could feel that I had lightened the mood a little. With that exchange done I exited the room and went back to my office. As I entered the door to my office I saw my computer with a notification on the screen. I sighed.

Me: "If it's from Charles I'm just going to delete it."

I walked over and sat down then opened the notification. It was an email on the secured network, as usual. However the name surprised me. It was from the O5. It wasn't from just one council member, it was a collective message. It read, "Attention Site 08-4 Director, Dr. (Y/N) (L/N) your site is currently under review under suspicion of not following proper containment protocols. Under accompaniment of a level 4 class containment specialist, a new testing medium will be implemented for your case consisting of the cooperation of one of the subjects from site 06-5 (SCP-187). Information is attached in this message, please read over and prepare for your inspection." I sat there a moment and thought about my situation. The preparations alone would take at least two days in order to collect all of the materials to make everything appear "proper". But how am I going to do this without destroying the trust I've built with the children? I have no doubt not one of them would try to escape or harm someone without cause, but the O5 won't see it that way. Maybe if I convince the person they're bringing with the level 4 that everyone here is harmless they can help me gain some footing with the higher ups.
