7 - The Good Times
At school, Thea watched in humor as Ned rolled his chair over to Peter. Peter, who was sitting next to Thea, was scribbling in his notebook. All three of them were wearing large protective goggles because of the materials they were boiling in the burner. Thea smiled as Ned asked Peter in a low voice. "Can you spit venom?"
"No," Peter replied curtly.
Thea sighed out dramatically. "You know Pete, that would be helpful. You should get on that." Peter rolled his eyes but also smiled sweetly at Thea's remark.
"Can you summon an army of spiders?" Ned asked with a serious look on his face. Thea's eyebrows furrowed together in confusion as he asked this with complete confidence.
Peter looked up at the board, stopping his notes for a second to see the Chemistry teacher explaining the lecture, only to bend back down. Suppressing a sigh, Peter replied, "No, Ned."
Ned stopped asking for a second, his mind thinking of other ideas. Suddenly, Ned's eyes were on Thea's as Ned asked, "What can you do?"
Thea sputtered for a moment, "I-I can control all energy and matter, but more specifically dark matter and energy. If that's what you're wondering?"
Ned's face soon changed from one of questioning to one of complete joy and confusion. "Does that mean you can change physical aspects of objects? Or even the energy of an object? Because that would be insane!" Ned spoke with enthusiasm.
Thea pondered for a moment. "I have no idea... I guess so? I never thought about that before really."
Ned smiled widely and whispered out, "Change the color of the paper!" Ned pointed down to the blank piece of paper on the table that Thea was supposed to fill out. Thea stared down at the piece of paper, wondering if she could actually do it. Peter stopped his writing for a moment, looking at Thea. She slowly reached her arm out and placed it down on the piece of paper.
"You're not actually doing this? Right, Thea?" Peter questioned.
Without answering his question, Thea closed her eyes in order for those around her to not be able to see them changing color. With a deep breath, Thea forced the familiar purple mist out of her palm and kept it in a controlled spot under her hand. Gradually, the paper seemed like every atom was being rewritten. It was almost like viewing a glitch but in real life.
When Thea opened her eyes she saw Peter and Ned both staring at her in awe. She looked down at the paper to see that the once pure white paper was now purple. Thea let out a deep breath she was holding and laughed softly.
"Woah," Ned whispered in awe.
Thea grinned at Peter, who just stared at her in shock.
The teacher's lecture soon ended when the bell rang, signaling the end of the period. This year's schedule for Peter, Ned, and Thea all seemed to align with one another. Thea had mentioned to Tony that if he somehow managed to get them into the same classes, that she would love him forever. Tony, in return, didn't even think about this twice before he changed her schedule. Peter never knew about this though, only finding it strange that Thea was in all the same classes as Ned and him.
"Homecoming's coming up right?" Thea asked while walking backward down the hall, looking at Ned and Peter. She directed her question more towards Peter, but quickly looked at Ned when she realized that her eyes were on Peter for too long.
"I-um-yeah. It's in a week." Peter spoke softly. His eyes never fully landed on Thea.
Thea just grinned slightly and turned back around, wedging herself in between Ned and Peter. They continued their walk to their next class, history.
The class passed slowly for Thea, her mind wandering to other things. Like her kiss with Peter the last night. Peter and Thea never said anything about it after it happened.
Maybe it is better that way, Thea thought, we are just friends... right?
Thea glanced over to Peter throughout the class, watching as he and Ned spoke about him being Spider-Man again.
The next period for the trio was PE class. One class that Thea could actually do successfully. Thea had never been good at any academic subjects, but at least with PE, she knew how to run.
The entire class was stuck in the gym. The PE teacher forcing everyone onto the bleachers for a video for a fitness test. Thea sat down next to Peter as Coach Wilson, the PE teacher, pressed the play button. Thea started to giggle softly as she saw who was on the tv. In his full outfit, Captain America said, "Hi. I'm Captain America. Whether you're in a classroom or on the battlefield..." his voice faded out at Thea overheard Peter and ned's conversation.
"Do you know him too?" Ned asked in a low voice.
"Yeah, we met," Peter confirmed.
Ned looked at Peter in awe as his jaw went slack.
"I stole his shield," Peter boasted to Ned.
Thea scoffed for a second but her mouth gaped as she saw Ned's reaction. His mouth was open wide and his eyes bugged, almost out of his head.
"What?" Ned exclaimed.
"Not before I beat your ass Parker," Thea laughed back at him. Peter's boasting dropped as he heard this.
"You were there too?!" Ned loudly whispered to Thea.
Thea nodded and smiled in response.
She returned her view to the TV screen to see Captain America say, "Today my good friend, your gym teacher," he pointed to the empty space next to him where Coach Wilson was supposed to be, "will be conducting the Captain America Fitness Challenge."
Thea looked at Coach Wilson as he held a stern and bored look on his face. He wasn't amused by this video, and neither was the rest of the class. Thea looked to the TV again to see Captain salute to the group before it transitioned to the title, 'Station I: Sit-ups'.
"Thank you, Captain. I'm pretty sure this guys a war criminal now, but whatever. I have to show these videos. It's required by the state. Let's do it," Coach Wilson spoke in a monotone voice. He then picked up his whistle and blew into it, forcing the teens off the bleachers and onto the mats on the floor.
Coach Wilson let everyone pick their partner for the sit-ups. Thea picked the only other person she truly knew in the gym, besides Peter and Ned, which was Michelle. She was carrying around a book with her that was titled, 'Of Human Bondage.' Thea made sure to sit close to Peter and Ned while doing the exercise.
Different teens were doing different exercises, on the center of the floor was Michelle, Thea, Peter, and Ned, all doing sit-ups. But on the outer edge of the gym was Flash climbing the rope. Thea eyed him cautiously as she sat on the floor, holding down Michelle's feet.
Thea laughed loudly as Michelle, instead of doing sit-ups, just lifted her book she was reading up and down.
"So..." Michelle started talking in a low voice, "you and Peter dating yet?"
Thea tilted her head slightly, understanding her question but not knowing where it came from.
"Uh-no, why would you think that?" Thea inquired.
Michelle sighed out and sat up momentarily, looking at Thea in her eyes. "Because you both obviously love each other."
Thea groaned out, "Just because we kissed once does not mean we love each other." As soon as she said this, Thea regretted it because Michelle tilted her head slightly and smiled at Thea, almost sinisterly.
"Oh, well now then."
Thea was going to continue her conversation, but stopped when she heard Ned call out loudly, "Peter knows Spider-Man!"
Thea turned to Peter and Ned in shock, her eyes wide as he said this in front of the whole gym class. Thea looked at Peter who had his mouth open and in a state of shock. The whole gym seemed to have dropped everything they were doing and stared at Peter.
Peter then hurriedly got up and walked over to the bleachers, Ned quickly following suit. Thea watched as Peter stammered out, "No, I don't. No. I... I mean..."
"They're friends," Ned tried to reassure.
Thea looked over her shoulder as she heard Flash's voice call out to Peter. He slid down the rope he was climbing and said, "Yeah, like Coach Wilson and Captain America are friends."
Thea started to clench her teeth and placed her hands at the side of her making fists. She Hurriedly got up from the ground and made her way over to Peter.
Peter stuttered out more, "I've met him. Yeah. A couple of times. But it's, um... through the Stark Internship. Mm-hm." Peter turned to Ned quickly, his teeth clenched and his face annoyed. "Yeah, well. I'm not really supposed to talk about it." He spoke through clenched teeth.
Thea glared down Flash as he spoke out with sarcasm, "Well, that's awesome. Hey, you know what? Maybe you should invite him to Liz's party. Right?" Flash turned to Liz for confirmation.
"Yeah, I'm having people over tonight. You're more than welcome to come." Liz spoke to Peter in a soft voice.
"Having a party?" Peter said breathlessly.
"Yeah, it's gonna be dope. You should totally invite your personal friend Spider-Man," Flash retaliated.
"Um," Peter stood, not knowing how to answer.
Thea placed a hand on his shoulder and whispered to him, "It's okay, Pete. You don't have to go, let alone answer this bully." Her soft voice gave Peter chills down the back of his neck.
"It's okay. I know Peter's way too busy for parties anyway, so..." Liz continued on while placing her chin on her hand.
Flash sauntered over to Peter, placing him right in front of Thea.
"Come on. He'll be there. Right, Parker?"
Flash continued walking and went past Peter, shoving Peter's shoulder with his own. The bell then rang, letting the class out. Flash exited first, followed by the rest of the class.
Thea glared at Flash and ground her teeth. Her anger was getting the better of her as she turned to look at Peter. His jaw was clenched and his eyes stared down at the ground in anger and contemplation. Thea looked over her shoulder again at Flash, glaring at him, her eyes turning purple. She closed her eyes tightly, not wanting to show her eyes. Her fists were clenched on her side as she breathed deeply.
Suddenly, she heard a yelp come from the hallway outside the gym. Thea opened her eyes, now back to their normal hue. To see Flash trip over nothing in the air and fall to the ground.
Ned just stared at Thea in awe as he understood what had just happened. Not even Thea understood; she had just made Flash trip by thinking about it.
She breathed in deeply one last time before she turned back around curtly to Peter. Peter, frustrated, threw his arms up in the air and swiveled around to glare at Ned. Peter took a few steps to Ned, Thea following suit.
"What are you doing?!" Peter yelled in a hushed voice.
In a hushed voice, Ned replied back, "Helping you."
Thea groaned, throwing her hand on her cheek, rubbing her eye in frustration. "With what?!" Thea yelled back to Ned.
Peter stood there, struggling to find the words.
"Dude, you're an Avenger now."
Thea stayed in place along with Peter as Ned walked out of the gym and down the hall. Thea looked at Peter, who stood in place, considering the idea.
"Please don't tell me you're thinking about going as Spider-Man?"
Peter stayed silent for a second before he sighed out, "I don't know yet Thea."
