Chapter 46

Eva sat on the back of Johann's pickup, Johann's rifle on his lap. Corey sat on the ground. He'd brought a small picnic lunch.

It was a real testament to Johann's trust in Eva and/or her spirit guides that he'd loaned both his pickup and gun to her, no questions asked. Heck, Eva had plenty of questions, as did Corey.

"So what exactly are we doing out here again?" Corey asked.

They were parked on the top a hill, looking over Count Road H - something or rather, heading north out of Hercules-Glades wildlife area.

Eva shrugged off Corey's question. "Darren said."

Corey gave her a look but didn't push. Instead she said, "do you want anymore to eat?"

"No, in fact I think you should pack it up," Eva answered.

"Why?"

"I feel we will be leaving soon."

"Feel?"

There was the distance whine of vehicles on the road below them. Eva suddenly knew, or thought she knew, what Darren wanted. She rose with the gun in her hand and spied down the scope.

The first vehicle to come around the bend was a battered red Ford Explorer. She had one moment to register the pale white face in the passenger seat and confirm her suspicion.

Hard on their heels were a group of bikers. Eva drew a bead on the first motorcycle in the group and opened fire. The bike spun out of control and went over on its side, the drive spilling down the road. The next three were too close behind and slammed into or over the fallen bike, sending them flying in different directions.

"Good shot. Now go," Darren's voice said in Eva's mind.

Corey had climbed up on the back of the pickup. "Did you just...?"

"They're shifters," Eva said, her tone cold. "They'll live. But we might not want to be up here when they come to investigate." She jumped down and put the gun back in the rack at the back of the pickup's cab while Corey packed the picnic basket back in.

"I wonder what Jazzy was doing around here," Eva muttered as they pulled out.

"Jazzy?"

"Yeah, you heard anything from them, or Amanda?"

Corey shook her head. "Amanda called a couple days ago. They've got spotty reception at the site, she can only call when they are down near the parking lot. Sounds like a pretty intense summer. But no mention of Jazzy."

"Couple days ago?" Eva mused and then shrugged. "Guess we will have to wait to hear from them again. God, patience." She appealed to the heavens, "Patience and trust, can we please skip those lessons? I want to know."
