Chapter 33

Amanda set bolt upright on the sleeping pad. Connor startled at the sudden movement as he, too, came awake. Amanda's heart raced and she fought to understand what had woken her. "Something is wrong," she whispered.

"What?" Connor asked, his voice still groggy with sleep.

"Someone transformed," Amanda said, and as soon as she said she knew that was what had woken her.

"It's a camp full of werewolves. I am sure people transform all the time."

"One of ours," she snapped. She found a lamp and looked around the pavilion. Tanner groaned and rolled over as the light hit his eyes.

Jonathan's eyes came open and he sat up. "Something wrong?"

"Erica, Brianna," Amanda said, looking at the empty sleeping bags. "Where are they?"

"I don't know," Connor protested.

"Brianna went to the party with the others," Jonathan said as he rose and found a second light. "Not sure about Erica. Haven't seen her since supper."

"Damn it," Amanda groused. "She's in trouble. I know it."

"How?" Connor protested.

She shot him a look. "I just do, now help me find her."

Without looking back she stepped outside the pavilion. To their credit Connor and Jonathan were both there moments later, though clearly neither believed her. "Probably just a bad dream," Connor muttered to Jonathan.

Erica was sitting by the Arthur's pack's fire, just to the left of the pavilion. Arthur and pack were nowhere to be seen. The moon was riding low in the sky and it must be near two am, the entire camp quiet around them. Erica and Myrna were there, huddle low and close to the fire.

Erica's head snapped around as Amanda stepped onto the lane. She rose and came over. She blushed in the vague light of the lantern.

Not Erica then. "Have you seen Brianna?"

Erica nodded no. "She went to the party with the others."

"The others are back."

They followed Amanda as she started down the lane. Valerie was still up at Aaron's fire, talking with a man and drinking wine. "Have you seen Brianna?" Amanda demanded as she stepped into the fire ring.

"Her and Tanner are still at the party," Valerie replied. "She was dancing with the Jaegers last I saw."

"No, the Jaegers left a couple of hours ago," the man contradicted. "Saw them heading back to their camp."

"Tanner is there," Valerie said, dismissive.

"No, he came back a half hour or more ago," Connor replied before Amanda could.

Valerie sat upright, worry crossing her face. "We should check."

They all headed down towards the party site. Whether they had caught her fear, or were merely humouring her, no one suggested she'd had a bad dream or that Brianna would come back on her own.

The party site was mostly empty, the music gone. A couple groped or fucked in the shadows on the edge, but a quick glance of Jonathan's beam showed that neither were Brianna. Three men still drank around a fire towards the far side of the field and at least one wolf was passed out from drinking on the field itself.

"Jonathan, Valerie, go back. Find out if Tanner knows anything," Amanda barked. "Then search that side of the camp. Erica, Connor come with me." She strode off down another lane along the far side of the camp, shining her light between tents. She thought about calling out Brianna's name, but she wasn't sure what sort of trouble she might be in, or if that would alert whoever to their presence.

"Damn, she got you good," A voice said, somewhere on the edge of Amanda's hearing. She made for it.

"Damn bitch," a second voice said and then, "Hush, I hear something."

Amanda's light caught a glimpse of gold and she heard a soft whimper. Brianna was coming towards them in wolf form, holding one foreleg against her chest and limping. "See to her," Amanda barked at Erica. She stormed past Brianna, past the next set of tents and into the far lane. It was empty. She stared around her, trying to spot the men whose voices she'd heard. She took a big sniff and got Fleischer scent, but they were on the Fleischer side of the camp and the scent was all around them.

She turned, frustrated and made her way back. "No sign of them," she growled.

Brianna was back in human form. Jonathan had shed his sweat pants so Brianna could pull them on. and Erica was in her bra, using her shirt to wrap Brianna's bare chest and her right arm to her side.

"What happened?" Connor asked, his voice shaking.

"Two guys and one girl," Amanda snarled. "Can guess well enough. Did they? I'll kill em."

Brianna shook her head no. "Tried though."

"I can't see where they went," Amanda said. "Let's get back to our pavilion. We'll talk there."

Everyone was up when they got there, and in an uproar. Tanner was shamed faced and apologetic, as were Valerie and Robbie. Tanner had been off with some woman from another tribe, there was little need to guess why. He'd assumed that Valerie or Robbie were still watching the party and would make sure Brianna got home. They'd both made the same assumption about Tanner.

"Let me have a look at her," Sarah Oleson, one of Arthur's wolves, said. She moved Brianna's shoulder tenderly. Brianna struggled to keep Erica's shirt around her and bit back a cry at the movement. "Tore it right out of socket. If you men could step out a minute?"

Amanda watched Aaron, Arthur and the others filter out. Connor paused a moment, hovering protectively by Brianna. Amanda lay a hand on his shoulder and gave him a look. He nodded and left.

"Hold her, I've got to put it back in socket," Sarah said. Guessing what was coming, she slid her arms around Brianna, holding the shirt around her the best she could. "This will hurt a bit," she said to Brianna. Brianna nodded.

She pulled the arm straight out in front of Brianna. Brianna whimpered and then bit down on her lip and gave Sarah a small nod of readiness. Sarah pulled the arm slowly out toward the side, pulling and stretching as she went.

Amanda felt Brianna tense but she did not cry out again. There was a soft click as the shoulder snapped back into it's socket.

They helped Brianna pull a sports bra on, sliding it first over the injured shoulder and then getting her into a shirt. Finally Sarah used a length of cloth to bind the arm close to Brianna's side, "just for the night, so it can heal."

They called the men back in and Brianna told them, in a halting voice, what had happened.

"You took a drink from a stranger?" Arthur's voice was sharp. "What were you thinking?"

"It's not her fault," Valerie snarled. "She's young. She didn't know better."

"No!" Amanda snapped. "None of you knew. 'Alcohol doesn't affect shifters as much.' 'Drugs don't affect us.' 'Our metabolism is different.' You've been saying it as long as I've known you. It's not true anymore. They," she pointed outside the tent. "They have new drugs. Look what happened with Darren and Mitch. It's a new world. You just haven't realised it. So don't go blaming Brianna for not realising you were all wrong."

Valerie blushed and looked down.

"Amanda is right," Mitch said in his low rolling voice. "Brianna, I'm sorry. We all should have been more cautious."

"We should have. We should have been watching more closely," Valerie said, coming to Brianna's side. "Can you forgive me?" She turned to Robbie and Arthur, who were standing side by side. "And you, two. You tried to warn us that these tribes were different, followed different rules. I should have listened." Tears were falling from her eyes as she talked.

"It wasn't you," Brianna said, pulling Valerie into a hug. "I know that."

"Tomorrow, we will confront the Fleischers about this," Connor said. "We will make them pay." There wasn't much else to be said. The group started to break up, heading back to bed.
