Chapter 3
Brianna looked up as the front door came open. It was Erica, in running shorts and a tank top.
"Where's Jonathan?" Brianna asked as Erica shut the door.
Erica shrugged. "He's not back? Must have taken the long route. We split ways at the edge of town."
"You always split ways at the edge of town," Brianna commented.
"So? He likes long runs, you know that. Longer than anyone."
Brianna pursed her lips as Erica headed down the long hall where they had their rooms. It was a lie, or at least, a half truth. It bothered Brianna. She had no secrets from Erica, why did Erica feel the need to keep things from her?
She followed Erica down the hall. Erica was in her room, but her door was open. She was gathering a towel and shampoo.
"You really should use conditioner, too, you know," Brianna commented.
Erica shrugged off the suggestion. "Works for me. What?"
"What do you do?" Brianna asked. "On the edge of town? Is there..."
"Is there what?"
"Someone," Brianna finished.
Erica blushed and looked away.
"There is," Brianna hissed.
"Not like that," Erica said.
"What would Jazzy say?" Brianna barked.
"It's not like that," Erica said. "It's not even...it doesn't matter. If there was someone and if Jazzy knew, she'd say 'cool.'"
"Are you sure?"
"That's what we decided," Erica said. "Just cause I'm not pining like you are for Charley."
It was Brianna's turn to blush. "I just miss him," she muttered.
"I know, we all know. It was cute, last week. And just because I'm not moping around the house about Jazzy doesn't mean I didn't love her. And if, and when, I decide to move on, it won't invalidate your love." She pushed past Brianna heading down the hall towards the bathroom.
"I think you are denying your feelings," Brianna called after her.
Erica spun at the bathroom door. "I think you are projecting your feelings onto Jazzy and me." She turned and went in, shutting the door with a snap that was just shy of a slam.
Brianna pursed her lips again and went back to the main room. She slid her phone out and looked at the screensaver again, her and Charley. Erica had it backwards, she thought. Brianna hadn't been moping since they left Idaho. She'd been dealing with her feelings. Something that Erica seemed bound and determined not to do.
