Chapter Twenty Six
"And she studied for hours and I know she did. I set work for her that was all completed-"
"-Did you mark it?"
Billie shrugged hesitantly. "Some?"
Mr Watson sighed looking away from Billie who was standing beside his desk and at me, who was in the chair across. He gave me a long hard stare. "You really believe that that ninety two percent was your score Mallory?"
"I-"
"-It is her score," Billie butted aggressively in cutting me off.
He breathed out again, setting his hands on the desk with his fingers intertwined. "Well," He slowly started. "I'm afraid I can't necessary do anything with out any hard sources of evidence,"
"What is this a crime case?" I mumbled, it going unheard as Billie carried on.
"Well, there is something that is worth seeing..." Billie started, sitting in the spare seat beside mine. He looked at me and down at my backpack where the 'evidence' was. I sighed, kicking the bag over to him before he picked it up unzipping the bag.
I saw the two tests he pulled out, setting my bag back down as he flicked through them.
"So-" He began, placing down one test. "-This is Mallory's test,"
Mr Watson picked up the test flicking through to the end. "The one with thirty percent on... yeah?"
"Thirty six actually," I huffed, crossing my arms.
Billie placed down the other test. "And Tyler Lawsons,"
"Mr Armstrong- whats your point?"
"Well, looking at the handwriting in both tests. None of them match to the name on the paper,"
"And how am I suppose to believe-"
"-Mallory's music book." he told him, cutting off his sentence as he placed down my music book he pulled out my bag. "A semester ago, way before the test,"
He flicked through the pages looking at it. As he did, Billie re opened up the test with my name on it sliding it back to Mr Watson.
"It's clearly not her writing in that test," Billie shrugged.
Mr Watson looked up over at me and Billie. Before looking back at the test with Tyler's name on. He brought it close to my book as I awkwardly started down at my trainers.
"Maybe you just wrote in the wrong test book?" I heard Mr Watson suggest as I looked up.
"The wrong test book? I wrote my name on mine?"
"So you're suggesting someone switched them?"
I took a deep breathe back in, looking back over Billie for help.
Billie looked back at Mr Watson. "Well, Mallory obviously hadn't planned for this to happen, she wouldn't want her test results to be so low,"
"So... who are you trying to say did do it,"
"Tyler," I answered quickly.
Mr Watson looked at Billie, who shrugged. "If the shoe fits,"
He nodded, looking back at the two tests. Flicking through the answers on the pages between mine and Tyler's test. Before he pressed a bottom before the microphone on his desk that made a buzz, speaking into it. "Can I have Tyler Lawson to my office please. Excuse him from any lessons, to my office please. Thank you,"
Billie tapped me on my leg, as I looked over at him he gave me a mini smile. After that, Billie, Mr Watson and I waited patiently for Tyler to make his way to the office.
"So Mallory," Mr Watson spoke up as we waited.
I looked up over at him. "Hmm?"
"Why didn't you show me these tests when you were in my office last time about this?"
"Oh well- I mean- well I just assumed that- y'know- no one was gonna... believe me or anything,"
I think he may have realised that everything he had said to me about those percentages being unachievable to me and so on were a little unnecessary when finding out that I hadn't been lying and that that percentage really was achievable to mine.
Finally the one and only walked into the office, I looked over at him wanting to grin evilly, his eyes weren't even on me.
"Is everything okay Sir?" He asked, referring to the fact that Billie and I were sat in the office.
Billie stood up, for Tyler to take the seat as he did. Billie stood beside Mr Watsons chair as he spoke to Tyler.
"Is this yours?" He asked him, holding up the test with his name on.
I looked over at Tyler. His face pulled into a expression of sheer fake confusion. "Yeah?"
"So I suppose this is your writing too?" He placed the test down for Tyler to see, opening it up.
"Well- yeah obviously its- its my test,"
"And this test," He continued, opening the one with my name up. Or better known as Tyler's real test. "This writing isnt yours?"
Tyler looked over at me for a split second biting his bottom lip in frustration, thinking it must've been in the trash can still.
"Tyler,"
"What? Yeah, that's not mine I mean- Mallory's names obviously on it how would that writing be mine,"
"Looking at Mallory's work..." He began, pulling my music book open. "It really seems like the writing in your test matches up to Mallory's hand writing. Whys that?"
"I dont know!"
"So what your saying is, you don't have any clue why some how your test seems to have Mallory's name on and vice versa?" Billie asked him, his arms crossed.
"That test with my name on is my test,"
"My hand writings in there," I pointed out.
"Similar hand writing doesnt prove anything- look. Can I please just go back to my lesson?"
"Our hand writings no where near similar?" I laughed.
"Mallory," Mr Watson warned, meaning I needed to shut up.
I nodded annoyed, looking back at Tyler. "Alright, so maybe someone swapped the names or something I dont know- thats nothing to do with me,"
"But why would someone else do that?" Billie asked him. "What would someone else benefit from you getting the higher percentage?"
"Why are you asking me?!"
"Alright alright, enough shouting Tyler," Mr Watson sighed, as he pulled his chair back. The draw behind his desk was opened as he pulled out his little note pad, the one I knew all too well. But looking at Tyler, he didn't. "I think it's clear whats happened here. So maybe we'll just call this detention for four weeks, a re take on the test and an apology letter wrote for Mrs and Mr Valentine to read. Your parents will be consulted and-"
"-What? For- for what?"
He looked up at the notepad from where he was writing at Tyler flatly. "Cheating,"
"I didn't cheat- thats my test and-"
"-The tests were obviously swapped Tyler," Billie mumbled.
Tyler sunk a little into the chair, giving Billie an eye squint as he did.
"-As I was saying your parents will be informed, as well as yours Mallory your percentage will be changed on your record from a thirty six to-" He paused looking at the other test result. "-Ninety two,"
"Sick," I nodded smiling.
"As for you Mr Lawson I'm severely disappointed. I would never expect this behaviour from someone like you and I'm ashamed to say you proved me wrong,"
He didn't say anything, Tyler didn't even look back at him. Just slouched down in the chair, his arms crossed as he scowled his face looking away from everyone. Obviously unhappy with the situation he found himself in, and safe to say he had come passed trying to lie.
"You're now free to leave," He told him.
Tyler got up pretty fast, not looking back or questioning anything as he left.
Then all eyes were on me.
"I'll be making phone calls to parents now. I apologise for what I said Mallory, as a teacher it was wrong to say. You've come so far and I'm proud of you, just... just keep it up will you?"
"No promises,"
"Alright then, well that means your free to go too. And I... have some important things to get on to,"
Billie stood up straight. "Thanks Mr Watson,"
"Thank you Mr Armstrong,"
"Thank me?"
I picked up my bag, thinking Billie was following behind as I left the office. Only to realise I could still hear them talking as I reached out side of the open door.
"Thank you for bringing it to my attention," I could hear Mr Watson briefly tell him.
"It was really my pleasure. She deserved the mark she worked for,"
"You're a great teacher Armstrong,"
"Eh... maybe. But teachings not really my thing,"
"Either way, you really helped a student out,"
There was a moment of silence. Before I heard. "I did..."
I think there was a moment where Billie realised that after all the work he put into putting me on the right path itreally did pay off.
He left the office finding me outside as he gave me a smile. "How you feeling?"
"Y'know..." I began, as we walked down the halls. "Justice doesn't really feel served,"
"It doesn't?"
"No... I just feel like he hasn't got what he deserved yet,"
"Mallory, not everything has to end with violence,"
"No no- I'm not saying that. Or... well maybe I am. But... it just doesnt seem like enough, I didn't get to give him something to be sorry for-"
"-But someone else did, isnt that enough?"
"For messing with me? I need to give him a personal reason,"
"Mallory you don't need to for that at all." He sighed pushing the exit door open. He held it open for me as I walked out into the cold, him following behind as we walked around into the parking lot. "I know you want to, trust me I do. But sometimes theres nothing more you can do,"
"But theres so much more I can do. It just... all that, just for a ten minute talk and like that everything's solved?"
"Thats how easy it is sometimes,"
"Sometimes?"
"Well, other times you get more than a fair share. But thats just life,"
We climbed into his car, as I stayed silent still thinking about it.
When you looked at the whole situation, did it seem fair?
Detention for four school weeks, having to write a letter to my parents apologising, a call home to his parents explaining what he'd done and re taking the test.
"Mallory, it's sorted," he told me starting the car. "Put your seatbelt on,"
I sighed pulling the safety belt over my chest plugging it in. "I know it's sorted," I told him as it clicked. "But that was just it,"
"What did you want?"
"Revenge,"
"And you got it,"
"I know," I shrugged, as the car began to reverse out its driving spot. "But I don't feel it,"
"I know you wanted to do things your way," He sighed, circling out the parking lot. "But your not in trouble this way,"
"You mean my way as in a fight again?"
"That wasn't a fight, that was you attacking him,"
"Yeah, that then,"
Things always had been solved the wrong way and that was how I liked them solved. Personal problems are always solved with a personal revenge. Not this?
But looking over at Billie, he seemed happy with it. So maybe this was enough to label it a revenge or a punishment. I mean- no he wasn't getting away Scott free. But for all he did, he's walking away with a few telling offs.
So now that Billies and my mission was over.
What happened to us now?
It had been obviously stated that between us had ended up being love, but the only thing keeping us in touch was this. And now this is over, what do we do from here?
"So now what?" I asked him.
He looked over at me for a split second away from the road. "Huh?"
"Well since it's all 'over' and whatnot, where do we go from here?"
"Well, considering all our problems are now out of the way. It's where ever we want it to go,"
"So where do we want it to go?"
"Well," he shrugged, his hands on the steering wheel. "Thats our next problem,"
