Chapter 16
The silence still hangs between them when JungKook adds his final plea, the thing that he hopes will finally assuage Taehyung.
"It's not doing you a favour, I don't want to marry you just because you need that to survive, I don't want you to feel like you owe me anything or that you have taken something from me by marrying me... I'm the one who will gain the most because I will have you... Taehyung, even if there were no Hell below us and above us only sky, I'd still marry you."
He seals his words with a kiss, a tender kiss that he hopes holds everything that he is trying to say, everything that he feels in his heart -the very heart he thought was cold and dead- suddenly brought to life by the light that is Taehyung.
The salt of their tears mixes into the languid kiss and when there is a gentle clearing of throat behind them, they know -not only that it's time to go, but also where they are going.
Hell
"This looks nothing like I imagined Hell would look like... these colours are just breath-taking..." Taehyung says and gazes up at the sky of Hell, a kaleidoscope of colours gently swirling like some van Gogh painting in motion.
"I always thought it would be like red and burning, you know, people screaming and frying in the flames kind of thing, lots of horned, red naked people running around?" He chuckles until he hears JungKook's answer.
"Well, there are places like that too -this is just another part of Hell, the same way as there are other parts to Heaven or Earth."
Where they are, the scenery is truly beautiful. A flower meadow filled with crimson poppies and bright blue cornflowers, weeping willows with purple leaves, bright yellow birds singing strangely melancholy tunes in direct contrast to the bright colours. It's perfect for his mood because Taehyung feels bright but he also feels a little blue.
He doesn't have a lot to leave behind, not many friends, hardly any family and Hoseok is the only person he used to see regularly. But change is always scary and if it weren't for the incredibly and totally unexpected optimism of the Incubus he is about to marry, Taehyung would be feeling much more nervous than he actually is.
"Lucky for us, it's beautiful here -almost as beautiful as you..." JungKook coos, fingers flicking under Taehyung's chin, who grins widely, eyes crinkling at the purposefully cheesy words meant to alleviate his obvious nervousness.
Yoongi makes gagging noises behind them which make Hoseok chuckle.
"They are so gross, seriously."
"Oh c'mon Yoongi, they're cute, admit it." Hoseok challenges.
"I'm going to die if I have to look at them until the end of eternity." He whines like a child until Jimin catches his eye, then suddenly he straightens his hair and the embroidered collar of his shirt out and clears his throat, working on trying to look all important.
"Look who's talking..." Hoseok snorts under his breath. "...don't think I can't see you eyeing Jimin, don't think I don't know why you asked for him specifically to come down here with me..." he taps the side of his nose like some old fortune-teller.
Flustered, cheeks burning, Yoongi replies "What do you mean, of course he's here because we need two heavenly witnesses and of course it has to be him because he is the only correctly ranked Angel who knows Taehyung enough to be his witness -and the only one who was able to come with no notice whatsoever..."
They are running out of time so Yoongi moves into position in at a slightly elevated area surrounded by flowers that are gently dancing in the soft breeze.
"This is probably the part where people would normally start by saying "dearly beloved, today we are gathered here"... blah blah blah I'm afraid we have no time for that today because our special people are short on time. So, instead, we are going to have a short ceremony and the kids can then spend the rest of eternity being obnoxious and telling each other their wedding vows everyday if they want to."
JungKook laughs under his breath, shaking his head. "I'm sorry, Yoongi has a particular style about him, he doesn't really conform, I hope you don't mind?" he whispers into Taehyung's ear while they stand next to Yoongi, holding hands.
Taehyung just smiles, whispering "it's ok, we'll have all the time in the world".
In a daze, Taehyung finds himself being guided onto the other side of the tiny clearing where he is then asked to face JungKook.
Yoongi guides them to join their right hands together, as if in a greeting.
"What about rings?!" Taehyung suddenly whispers in a panic.
"Oh there won't be any rings baby, down here it's a permanent mark that looks like a tattoo..."
"Ohhh, is it gonna hurt?" Taehyung whispers, eyes wide and when JungKook shrugs in answer in a way that makes Taehyung think that it might be really rather sore, he immediately says:
"Is it too late to change my mind?" and grins.
JungKook chuckles under his breath. "It'll be fine Angel, like taking off a plaster."
"I don't know what that feels like!" Taehyung hisses back when it's time to speak.
"You ready?" Yoongi asks, looking at JungKook first, then at Taehyung.
Wordless, they both nod.
"OK then! So since we're going for the short-short version, all you need to do is repeat after me... "Taehyung, with this mark, I thee wed." "
Taehyung is staring at their hands, slightly shell-shocked but not harbouring any doubts -he knows he'd never want to be with anyone more than he wants to be with JungKook.
His attention shifts back up when there is a silence where JungKook's words should be.
He searches JungKook eyes and sees nothing but love.
"I-I would like to say just a few words, just to Taehyung." JungKook speaks, quietly enough that his voice doesn't carry to where the few people attending can hear him.
"Taehyung, I-I-I just want you to know that...before we do this... I need you to know that... I'd choose you. I'd always choose you, no matter how many worlds, no matter how many lifetimes... I'd always find you and I'd always choose you... because I love you." Right at the last words of his confession, his voice cracks from the pressure of his surging emotions.
Taehyung can't even speak because of the torrent of his.
He simply lifts JungKook's hand to his mouth and kisses the knuckles with as much love as he can muster, his tears falling and glistening on the curve of it.
The sickeningly sweet romancing directly in front of Yoongi is tooth-rotting enough to almost turn him into a romantic. Almost.
JungKook clears his throat and speaks the words clearly and with confidence. "Taehyung, with this mark, I thee wed." the gentle squeeze of his fingers is comforting, the love shining in his eyes even more so.
"JungKook, with this mark, I thee wed." Taehyung speaks, his voice shaking but it holds zero hesitation.
Instantly, the mark begins to form, the heated tingle isn't painful but Taehyung can feel it deep inside him.
It starts by wrapping all over the ring finger from the very tip of it and around where a wedding band would sit, from there, the beautifully intricate swirls of the tattoo travel up their arms, at matching speed, all the way up, circling in dark vines around the arm, up to the shoulder and then Taehyung can feel it run over his chest and after circling around the heart, it stops, directly on it.
It is done. Taehyung is now a child of Hell, his husband a Demon of the underworld.
When they arrive at their newly dedicated house (who knew being married to an Incubus came with benefits?) they walk to the door holding hands but in a sudden ninja move, JungKook tackles Taehyung and lifts him onto his shoulder, his head tangling down behind his back.
"Oy! What are you doing?" Taehyung squeals, breathless.
"I'm carrying my wife into our new marital home." He's clearly teasing but Taehyung can't help but to take the bait.
"First of all! I don't think they call this type of carrying the "bridal style", this is more like Neanderthal style and second of all! You do not get to call me your wife!"
"Oh really?" JungKook challenges and drops Taehyung down onto his feet inside of the door.
"Really!" he pouts but struggles to keep the smiley wobble out of it.
He can't carry on with the façade any longer, instead he leans over and whispers into JungKook's ear:
"You don't get to call me that husband -at least not yet, you've got to earn that privilege." His voice dips seductively when he winks, making his way upstairs to find the bedroom.
"Is that so..? I'll have you know my angelic wife. I never back down from a challenge -and I have been known to always win." He looks so pleased with himself, it tickles Taehyung to say:
"Oh, I'm counting on it."
