The Keeper of Lore
A man sat in the observatory looking up at the sky. Usually, at this moment he would be in his library sitting and reading anything he could get his hands on. He would read and read for hours upon end, but tonight was different. If what he read was true, a certain comet would be passing through the sky tonight. A comet forgotten by the world and only came once every 10, 000 years. Plus, it had been a long time since he just relaxed and looked up at the sky, something he wasn't able to do since he became the keeper.
As he awaited the event to come, he caught a glimpse of a shadow lurking against the wall. The shadow was the very distinct shape of a cat. He stared at the shadow with disinterest, "I'm not here for your games Schrodinger." He said. "What do you want?"
"Aw, you were never any fun Gilbert." Schrodinger purred as he stalked towards the man, "I thought you could use a visitor, after all, staying in such a place can make a person go senile."
Gilbert smirked, letting out a low chuckle. Schrodinger was irked by this gesture as it was only something he did when he was trying to hide something. Gilbert was never good at lying or hiding secrets, and age hadn't helped him much with it all. He was too honest. Schrodinger narrowed his eyes at the old man now more suspicious, "If four million years hadn't made me go senile before then I doubt another night alone will. So, what are you really here for?"
Schrodinger stretched his paws out and jumped onto Gilbert's lap. He eyed him and decided to play a different game to get answers out of the Lore keeper, "I was bored, and constantly granting wishes takes a lot out of me," He curled up in Gilbert's lap
"Granting wishes? You mean twisting them into nightmares," Gilbert mumbled.
Schrodinger's ear twitched and the cat smiled at that response, "I give them exactly what they wish for. After all, their wishes are all inherently the same, a place where they can be happy, and that's what I'm creating for them."
"Be careful. One day you might end up going against someone that just might see through your disgusting tricks," Gilbert warned the cat then he looked up at the stars, "Then again, it seems someone already did."
Schrodinger hissed and jumped up out of Gilbert's lap, "He saw through nothing, so-" He began to defend when the old man cut him off
"I wan't speaking of him." Gilbert said running his hand through his gray hairs. He then gave a pointed look at Schrodinger.
Schrodinger stared at him for awhile, going back over the moments with the man named Jacob. He had to admit there was something off about the man's presence when he visited him a second time. He shouldn't have rejected his offer, something held the man back, influencing him without his knowing. Someone had made sure that Schrodinger didn't get what he wanted.
"Ei...leen.." The cat spoke her name slowly looking at Gilbert. He didn't think much about the woman before as he never cared those that surrounded the people he often went after, especially since most of them were alone, and only looking into it of that person was close to them. Jacob had no such person. All he had was his younger sister, and he tended to avoid going out, so the sudden appearance of Eileen should have ticked him off then, but he was too careless.
The Keeper turned his head away, knowing he had given the cat more information than he should have and so kept his mouth shut. The observatory began to shift into a large library, where books galore lined the walls and shelves filled to the brim intertwined between them, "I think it's time you leave..."
Gilbert started to walk away, but Schrodinger would not have it and followed after him, not letting him escape into his maze of books. "Tell me Gil, who is she?" He demanded the old man.
"Are you sure that's the right question that you should be asking?" Gilbert responded as he continued forward.
At those words, Schrodinger stopped walking and watched as Gilbert disappeared between the rows of books. He contemplated what Gilbert had said and began to pace back and forth. If that wasn't the right question, then what was?
Schrodinger left after losing track of Gilbert, his fur bristling at the thought of such an anomaly.
