Schrodinger

The black cat curled up in a tree watching the people go by, his eyes passing judgment. The leaves kept him shaded and covered from the sun's rays. The playful laughter of children gathers his attention. His ears twitch, tapping the small green leaf hanging directly above him. His eyes scan the park until he finds a gaggle of children running through the daisies despite the carefully placed sign that warned against anyone setting foot on the flowers. Schrodinger thinks of his first owner, getting close to that girl was his only and biggest mistake, but he had a lot to thank her for. She gave him his name, and for him a name was power.

That day he met her in the gardens, he had just been born in the world. An entity in the body of a small rather insignificant creature. He could barely fend for himself and hadn't a clue in where to go. It was the sweet smell of roses that drew him. The large bushes of red and pink flowers were magnificent. Then nothing but curiosity filled him for this world. He wondered just how much beauty was in the world, and by the world. It was the garden. Then he hadn't developed an understanding as he had now. The fallen bodies, and the amount of blood, the understanding that this world's beauty was just a cover up for the cruelty that went on beyond the gardens. Death, hatred, pain, war, betrayal, doubt, despair, grief, all of it. It all pointed to the evil within humanity.

He lost her. The first thing he connected to in the world was taken too soon, too quickly. He blamed this world for that. It was as if, as soon as you had found something it would all to easily be wiped away like a cruel joke that played on the hopes and faith of the people, only bringing about despair. To end the despair humans brought upon each other. And the best way to end despair was to bring them hope. Even false hope. By bringing hope to millions of people through granting wishes, he was able to successfully shift the despair to another world. The shining sun and bright blue sky were all thanks to his work. He flicked his tail in sensing a rising despair near him. He turned his head to look down at the concrete path.

Strolling beneath the tree was an oddly dressed man. Despite the heat, he was wearing a large beige trench coat and a white porkpie. It hid his face. The cat glared at the man. He realized that he wasn't the one that the heavy despair was coming from, however, the appearance of the man distracted him from his true target. Something was not right.

Schrodinger jumped down from the tree and padded after the strange man. He stalked after the man for hours. The stranger had aimlessly wandered around without anywhere to go. They were no longer in the streets but were headed down a crowded road, filled with bustling people. It was making it harder for Schrodinger to keep up with the man, having to keep from being stepped on as most of the people either didn't notice him or completely ignored him.

After awhile, Schrodinger lost the man and ran off trying to find where he went. To his annoyance, he could not find the man. The cat gave up in trying and perched near the window of an apartment. The television inside was blaring loudly.

...in good news, the missing girl has finally been found after being kidnapped as a baby and then was apparently abandoned by the perpetrators after a month, investigators are still looking for said perpetrators, but the girl has been finally reunited with her real family...

Schrodinger stopped listening as he spotted the man again and bounded off after him. He was determined not to lose the man again. There were fewer people on the streets this time, making it easier for him to move across the pavement and allowed after when a newspaper with the bold headline of 'New Technology Allows Boy to Walk Again' flew into his face. Angered, the cat shredded the newspaper with his claws and ran searching after the man again.

He had lost him once more. Schrodinger yowled in anger prowling down the sidewalk. His hunch was right and now he was just being toyed with. He kept going until he saw a familiar face, Dr. Jacob Akintola standing with his newfound partner. The one person he had previously lost all due to the abnormal woman that stayed by his side. Schrodinger hadn't quite noticed it before, but now he was sure of it. That day she had been there watching and waiting. It was her presence that made him lose his target. She gave off the same feeling as the Keeper and that made the cat uneasy.

Schrodinger stalked the pair until they reached a gathering of some sort. There were many people shifting around on the lawn and path, all crowding before a ribbon. Beyond it, a path laid along heading towards a large planetarium. Schrodinger's eyes widened. He couldn't believe it and now he knew who the strange man was.

"What do you think, Schrodinger?" He heard the Keeper's voice. "It seems that the people have finally started believing again."

Schrodinger turned to the LoreKeeper, who had rid himself of the heavy trench coat and hat, "That's impossible. Humans are not capable of such a feat." He hissed.

"Oh, but it is possible and I only have you to thank for making it so. All those people that fell into despair. Those that you believed you had vanquished in a void of eternal darkness. I set them free and granted them their wishes, restoring their hope."

Schrodinger shook his hand, "No, no, no. Even then, I've tried it before. Just granting wishing never leads to hope, just made the despair that much greater."

"And that's where I have you to thank."

"I don't understand."

"Don't worry it will all click soon." The Keeper turned and began heading off, "Come with me." He said to Schrodinger who followed after the old man as he led him to a small bookstore.

The moment Schrodinger stepped in, tears welled up in his eyes as a familiar scent flew at him. "It can't be..." Schrodinger followed the scent to find a young woman shelving books. Her light brown hair pulled back in a sloppy ponytail and hung across her shoulder. When she took notice of the feline, she stopped what she was doing and stared at the cat. A look in those kind and innocent hazel eyes was all Schrodinger needed to know it was her. "Char-"

The room disappeared and Charlotte along with it. In the dark, twinkling stars glittered around him and he once again faced with the Keeper. His eyes narrowed at the old man, "What games are you playing?"

"Despite the outcome, you had good intentions. Ones that helped me figure out a way to better this world and now to repay you. I will grant you what you desire most. The very thing this world took from."

Schrodinger shook his head. "No, that desire is nothing but an illusion."

"It's not, open your eyes, Schrodinger. Everything all started with her. Time never moved forward for you because of it, but you still feel it don't you. The short bond that you shared with her." The old man created a door from the stars. It shone brightly and almost alluring. "Her wish was what allowed me to make this possible."

"What wish? Make what impossible? Stop being so cryptic."

"You'll find out." He gestured towards the bright light. "Trust me Schrodinger."

Schrodinger looked at the old man then at the light. He padded forward and entered into it.

And the only thing the cat felt was hope
