Chapter 8

(Patton's POV)

"You may be wondering why that worked and why I have it, you see-" Hadley started to say before Logan cut them off.

"Yes, we really would because it seems to us like you just had a cure all along and hid it from us. I mean I know that we just met a couple of days ago and I don't understand people but you would think that people would know not to hide an important thing LIKE A CURE DURING A FREAKING ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!" Logan started to get really mad so I went and placed a hand on his shoulder making him turn to look at me. His features softened when he saw it was just me.

"I agree with Logan, you shouldn't have kept that from us," I said softly, "But I'm sure that you had a good reason, so tell us your good reason."

"We know we should've told you and we were going to as soon as we got to the base but thing just got so out of hand, I'm so sorry," Alex explained, "And why we have the antidote is for Hadley to explain."

We all turned to look at Hadley and they looked very nervous. Kyle was next to them obviously trying to calm them but it didn't seem to be working.

Hadley walked over to the van and pulled out five vials of antidote. "My father," Hadley started nervously looking at Alex. Their gaze fell on each one of us. When they got to me I gave them an encouraging smile and nodded. Hadley cleared their throat and continued, "was one of the scientists working on the cure that turned everyone into zombies."

"Sorry, WHAT?" Roman exclaimed. "Your father caused this and we are just supposed to trust you now?"

Hadley winced. I spoke, "Calm down everyone. They are obviously tense. Let them finish." Everyone nodded except Roman who opened his mouth to protest. Alex shot him a look that said talk and you die. He closed his mouth immediately.

"After people started turning," Hadley continued, "he secretly came up with this antidote. He hid it in his work van, which is the one that we have now. Derek and I should now be immune to the zombies that we may or may not encounter." They handed the antidotes off to Alex.

Everyone stared in shock at Hadley. I smiled at them, proud that they said what they needed to.

"We should keep going..." Hadley said walking back towards the van. I nodded and walked with them. Soon everyone else started following us. Alex, still holding the vials sighed and shook her head. I could tell this was not how she envisioned the conversation going. I watched her walked back.

Everything became like slow motion when she tripped on a rock. She gasped as she fell the vials shattering when the hit the ground. Hadley rushed out of the van, hands on their head. They moved over to Alex and helped her up.

"You okay?" They asked. Alex nodded still staring at the broken vials.

Soon the realization settled in. There was no more antidote. It was all there lying among the shards of broken glass. It was clear. We were truly on our own.
