Chapter 10
(Virgil' POV)
Finally, after that anxiety-inducing stop, we're back on the road. I never thought I'd say this but I'm glad that Princy and I are driving, well Roman's driving but I'm in the front with him because my anxiety is still high. We got on the road about an hour ago but by the time we got going, it was almost sundown and everyone was incredibly tired which makes sense. Today was kind of an emotional roller coaster because of all the running over people, and zombies and yelling and our friends turning into zombies scare.
"So why are you awake?" I asked Roman, "I mean no offense but you don't really seem like the night-owl type."
"Well today was kind of nerve-racking and I can't sleep while worrying about my brother or anyone else in this van so driving seems like the perfect way to focus on something else." He replied. Honestly, I can't blame him and it makes sense that driving would be able to take his focus off of the previous hours.
"Why are you staying up so late?" Roman asked raising an eyebrow at me.
"Oh, today was interesting. A lot happened, and it gave me anxiety. Like a lot of anxiety. Do you know how hard it is to fall asleep after that? We ran over someone, our friends got attacked, everyone started yelling at each other about the cures for the zombie apocalypse." I paused and then smiled. I looked at Roman then spoke, "You know the normal stuff."
Roman laughed. "Yeah...the normal stuff."
I laughed too. "Man. I remember when the 'normal stuff' was going to work on time or getting enough sleep."
"Yeah..." Roman said reminiscing. "I miss that..."
A silence fell over us. It stayed for a while before I spoke, "Wow."
"Wow...what?" Roman asked taking his eyes off the road.
"Wow, things are never going to be the same again."
"I guess not," Roman said taking one hand off the wheel. He placed it on Virgil's knee and smiled down at him. "Everything will be okay, yes?"
"If you say so princey," I said a little frightened by the sudden touch. I smiled at him and placed my hand on top of his. He smiled back at me.
"Shh!" a voice from behind me said. Roman and I looked back to see Logan and Hadley sitting on the floor in the very back of the van. They were huddled over a game board with small black and white pieces on it. Both of their faces were bent in concentration and they were talking in hushed voices.
"I wonder what those two are talking about," Roman said turning his head back towards the road.
"Yeah, I wonder," I replied looking back towards Roman. Then I looked out the window and up at the stars. The night was far too beautiful for the world to be this dark.

Hadley
Logan and I were sitting in the back of the van playing chess. I smiled as he moved his king into a space where I could checkmate him. I moved my knight in an L shape towards him and said, "That's it. Checkmate, your move."
Logan rolled his eyes. "There is no move after checkmate."
"That's the point, Logan," I replied using my finger to knock over his king. "I win."
"You win," Logan said picking up the pieces and placing them back into the box. My dad had taught me how to play chess and he always kept a set in the van.
"You're good," Logan said to me after closing the box. "I've never played someone who uses the strategy you do."
"Thanks," I reply. I look over at Kyle who was asleep next to Alex. I smiled at him then looked back to Logan.
"So, tell me more about your dad. Preferably his work and about the antidote," Logan said lacing his fingers together.
"Yeah, I don't know what the antidote comprised of. I do know that he developed it back in his lab and the notes are still there. He should have a copy of them here in the van I just haven't found them yet," I replied placing my hands together and on my chin.
"Perfect!" Logan said kind of loudly.
"Shh!" I said looking back over at Kyle. "Kyle hasn't been able to sleep in days."
"My apologies..." Logan said. "We shall look for the notes in the morning."
"Yeah, they will help us, but there is something else I should mention," I said rubbing the back of my neck.
"And what might that be?" Logan asked raising an eyebrow at me.
"My dad was super obsessed with the fact that someone was always trying to steal his work. He never wrote anything down that was too detailed. All of his notes are vague. So the notes will only give us hints. They will not tell us exactly what we need to know," I explain.
"Oh, that does make it more challenging then doesn't it?" Logan replied. "Nevertheless, we are smart. We can figure it out. Plus, when you are in a zombie apocalypse it is good to have a little fun."
I laughed. "Yeah because when I think of fun, I immediately think of curing the zombie apocalypse. That is totally what I did for fun before all of this."
"Really?" Logan asked confused.
"No, Logan," I replied rolling my eyes. "It's sarcasm."
Logan almost smiled. "Oh."
"We should probably get some sleep," I said yawning.
"Agreed," Logan said standing. I stood as well and we shook hands.
"We shall continue working tomorrow," I said walking over to Kyle.
"Yes, we shall," He replied.
It didn't take long for me to fall asleep.
